I hope ive done this right.please marie and gracie could you link my other stuff to this.you are so kind!!!!
my bails seems abit more settled tonight.not as much drinking.and has only wee weed twice in 14 hours which again is another major thing today.il test again in hour.ive stuck that many needles in his ear today god love him but every time I give him a tiny piece of chicken and this afternoon wwhen I did it.he got straight off my knee and went to the fridge.i had to laugh!!!I cant tell you guys how much better I feel knowing that ive got the support.i don't panic at 6pm now when the vet closes.i don't feel alone in dealing with this :-Di never thought id get my boy onto wet food after all these years.he surprises me every day <3
im just a little scared that with him not having the dry food will his bloods drop really low on the same amount of insulin (2 units)???? im at work tomorrow and worry myself to death.my mum said shed pop in on him but she cant do the blood tests!!il obviously be home as normal at 12.30 but a lot can happen between 9am-12.30pm as you all know!!!

Hi anna!

FANTASTIC news on the change to wet low-carb canned food! WOOT! that may very well help with the crystal-history. i don't know, but punkin had bladder infections about once a year for probably 10 years (he was on vet prescription dry food that was supposed to be good for the bladder) and when he became diabetic and i switched him to the canned food, that was the end of the bladder infections. i'm not sure if how that relates to crystals, but i think it's gotta be good for bladders to have the additional moisture.

And yes, it will very likely affect how much insulin he needs. if you are faced with a low number again in the morning, it's ok to skip the shot and we can talk about it after you get off work. we may need to find a new lower dose for him as the carbs from the dry food work their way out of his body. It can take a full day for dry food carbs to work out and be gone.

Post anytime and ask for help - you're in a time of transition with changing the food and it's going to be safer to err on the side of less insulin if there is any doubt.

what many people do in order to keep their cats safe while they are at work do is to make sure food is available. besides the insulin dose, food is our first strategy to help regulate blood sugar. many cats will go eat if they feel their blood sugar is dropping. i don't know if you have other cats who would eat the food, but if not, you can leave out regular low carb canned food for bailey to graze on. if you think he'd eat it all at once, sometimes it works to make "cat sickles" like popsicles, where you mix the canned food with some water and freeze it in muffin tins or ice cube trays, then leave those out.

others buy a timed feeder. i don't know what's available in the UK, but i had this one: http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-5-Meal-Electronic-Pet-Feeder/dp/B000GEWHNS?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20. it lets you set any time you want, fill up 1-4 compartments and it will rotate one compartment at a time out from under the cover so the cat can eat. if i was worried punkin was going to go low, i filled all 4 compartments with food - maybe 1 oz (2 soup spoons full) in each compartment. if i was really worried, i might put some higher carb food in some of them. Then i set the timer to open for them every 1/2 hour or so. What you do that will depend upon what Bailey's patterns are. as we learn them then we can make suggestions. you could even do a combination of leaving out regular food, frozen food, and some food in the timed feeder. Punkin would've eaten any food i left out immediately, so the timed auto-feeder was fabulous for our needs. If Bailey will graze and leave food for later, you may not need one.

you don't want to overfeed every day, of course, you'll want to figure out the total of how much food to give Bailey and then just divide it up so 1/2 is in the day cycle and 1/2 is in the night cycle.

yep ive already got a automatic pet feeder ,where I record my voice saying bailey its dinner time,I laugh every time I hear it!!! its stopped me worrying so much about regulating feeding times when I found out he was diabetic.he does eat everything in sight hence me getting this.hes a big lad so I have to make sure he gets enough.my mums going to come in tomorrow anyway to check with the transition to wet food.should I give him the 2 units do you think? im just a little worried about his low reading before am preshot today.its tricky to know what to do.you guys are amazing! I could do with one of you staying at my house till hes regulated ;-)
hes seemed to b a little more playful tonight.chased a fly around my hall although it broke my heart watching him struggle with his legs being how they are but he didn't seem to care..........................and he got his fly :-D

I'm not quite sure what to tell you about dose...hopefully someone with more experienced eyes will come along with that answer, but you are on track in that at the very least, you want to keep a close eye on Bailey as he transitions to his new food.

This is such a wonderful report to see, Anna - it sounds like both you and Bailey are starting to feel much better and more comfortable!!!

there is so much about FD (feline diabetes) that is decided by blood sugar numbers. Every cycle is different. It's impossible to say now what his dose should be in the morning given the changing diet. If there is any way to get a +11.5 (meaning check the BGs 1/2 hr before you intend to give the shot) and to post it then if you need help figuring out what to do - that's ideal. Hopefully in that half hour someone will see it - put something like "need dose help asap" in your subject line so it doesn't get missed.

if no one is on and you have a number under 150, and no one will be able to monitor him, you should probably skip the shot.

it's better to have him too high than too low.

there is usually someone on who feels able to give dosing advice, so you can always ask.

eta - i'm thrilled he got his fly! it's the little things that make life good! :-D

that's so very true :-D Im happier today even though ive just had a horrific black preshot reading but I expected it to be bad after todays mess.i panicked, fed him and then only gave him one unit an hour after normal time.its all a learning curve so hes back on the 2.25 that he was meant to be on exactly 12 hours after last shot.lets see what happens now.eeeeeek!!! its now 1am here and I really do need sleep.im no use to my boy without it.so il set my alarm for 7am at the nadir time .ive forgotten what its like to sleep!!!!lets hope we have a more settled night tonight!! thanks guys for your support.

I'm glad to hear Bailey is doing so well and chasing flies, etc. It's likely he will need less insulin as he stays away from the dry and eats the LC wet. Remember you are in control with home testing and food.

Thank you so much for starting a new condo. We do one condo per cat per day so all of your questions, thoughts, everything go in that one condo. And per day, I mean per AM/PM so whenever you post his AMPS/AMBG, that's when you start a new condo.

Shawna was very kind to link yesterday's condo....thank you, Shawna :-D :-D :-D

I know you are getting some sleep but here are the instructions on how you link the previous day's condo to your current day:

1. open the previous day's condo
2. click on the browser address, right click, select "copy"
3. open a "new topic" as you did today; put the cursor in the text box
4. click on the "url" box above the text box; this will put in the text box
5. put the cursor in between the two url boxes, right click, select "paste" so it will look like this: YOUR LINK HERE
6. VOILA!!

You are doing such a good job Anna, look at how much you have achieved in the last 48 hrs.
If it was the Encore that Bailey enjoyed, don't buy too many cans,as its not a compleat food, have you tried the Granatapet yet? I am going to put another order in to the Happy Kitty Co,so if you would like some I can tag it onto my order.
