2/22 Shasta

G'morning,

Shasta's eating her breffis and then it's back to bed for both of us. She seems ok, but I'm still not convinced she's really herself. She did cuddle w/ me last night while going to sleep. She's taking a mid-breffis potty break.

Ok, something's not right. She barely got a tiny poo out, seems to be straining, then we get the butt scooting. I tried a little anal sac expression...didn't get much of anything. Ok...fast forward 10 minutes...she's been to the LB ~3-4 times and getting nothing out. She vomited/puked pure liquid breffis and is highly agitated about not being able to poop. I'll be calling the vet as soon as they open (30 minutes). Hope they can make room for us.

Ok, no back to bed for us, but now I need to go and get dressed. I'll update when I can. Blessings to all!

~Deborah & Shasta

Morning Deborah ~O)

So sorry Shasta is having difficulties
Good luck getting an app't - hope everything is OK

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232

Thank you, Bruce. I'm still trying to get ahold of the vet and get an appointment. After many a try (~8/9 times), she finally pooped. However, there were 2 pukus sessions and several very loud and pain-ridden yeowls. Lordy, talk about feeling helpless. She's finally calmed down. We did snuggle together for a few minutes...got lots of purrs. She just ate a little of her breffis and watching for birds and squirrels out the window. Ok, off to call the vet again.

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232

Interest in birds & squirrels is good  Hopefully just a bout of constipation, which can bring on pukus,
especially after eating and then not being able to poop.. Hope vet can see you soon

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163

Just got a call back from the vet...they cannot see us today. His assistant suggested going to the emergency vet. It sounded like a bladder infection to him. I am really hesitant about going to the e-vet. With Shasta's temperament, there's not much they can do with her except look at her, listen to what I tell them happened this morning and then what...prescribe drugs?! I don't want to give her medication based on next-to-no knowledge and start that medication on a Saturday...not knowing how she"ll react. On the flip side...I really don't want to see her in pain. She's sitting on my lap right now, seemingly very content.

Anyone have any experience with similar issues? Suggestions? Advice? Help?!

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

Deborah, so sorry and sending mega vines to Shasta. You know that Maggie's had severe constipation, but no straining and pain, just a real lethargy and not feeling well. The vomiting is a worry. How many days since her last poop?

ETA Just saw above she did have a couple poops, with yowling!

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

((((Deborah)))) I would probably go to the e-vet but I don't know Shasta at the vet either. Something is obviously wrong. Do you give her miralax and lactulose?
Liz

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

Hi Deborah, isn't there any way your Vet could squeeze Shasta in today considering it's urgent?

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

No advice from me, but keeping you guys in my thoughts .. poor baby girl ..

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

Hi Ann & Liz,

Shasta finally passed several good sized poops after about 7 failed attempts. My vet's assistant called me back and said they could not see us today. :YMSIGH: Since finally passing stool, she has eaten, purred, sitting in lap getting pets and scritches. Looking at her right now, she seems fine. I just don't want to have a repeat episode tonight or tomorrow. Liz, she is a nightmare at the vet...hissing, growling, teeth & claws at the ready. They wouldn't be able to examine her without sedating...and I won't allow e-vet to do that unless she is almost unconscious. I don't trust e-vet to sedate diabetic cat w/ heart problems, properly. I hate being so paranoid, but too many horror stories.

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

Deborah, so glad she pooped and sounds like she's feeling much better. I can understand, as i used to have a cat that was a nightmare at Vetty. Keep us posted. Sending lots of feel better vines to Shasta and calming vines for you. It had to be scary for you. Hugs.

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

Thanks Ann. I'm about to go run a few errands and then come home and chill w/ my baby girl the rest of the day. I'll keep posting her moods!

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

Morning Deborah ~O) ~O) ~O)

oh my.... I am sorry too that your vet could not see you today. How disappointing. I so udnertsand your concern over the e-vet. I am there too with Mannie, as he has multiple health issues too..... Maybe see if you can have Shasta seen on Monday? will work allow that? You could always cancel if this was one time thing for Shasta today. I had a kitty once that was a nightmare at the vet too: I had to give him a "tranquilizer"/calm down pill before we went to any appt. He was such a terror there - so I can sympathize with you on that one. I wish you much luck with this. I wish I could offer suggestions.... I've just never had to deal with any of this: constipation etc....

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

Zener is the exact opposite - totally mellow. I hope it was just a one time thing. Do you give her miralax or lactulose?
Liz

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 LB scare

you didn't mention how her poo was. ( yes, only here in LL :-D )
normal looking? reallly dry?
I have noticed when I have given a lot of freeze dried treats and maybe not added enough water to the food... sometimes we get a lump
that basically looks like a freeze dried poo...
I can imagine that would be unpleasant for Shasta...

if it's a UTI, you want to get her in as soon as you could.

I'd definitely try for a monday appt.
And if things got worse, that er vet is always there tonite, tomorrow.... while you evaluate....

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 +6=90 LB scare

Can you check with your vet to see if Miralax is OK for Shasta given her health issues? Alternatively, if you're not already adding water to her food, I'd do so. I'd also add some oil -- vegetable oil, omega-3 (if fish isn't a problem for her), butter, or coconut oil. If she's having problems passing stool, some lubrication may help.

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 +6=90 LB scare

I think ECID because coconut oil never helped Gus when he was constipated. That's why I started giving him the baby food squash and his poos have been perfect. I buy the BeechNut Homestyle squash...no sugar added. Mine is Stage 2 and says "Green Giant" on the front. I put 1 tbsp mixed in his canned food once a day. He loves it.

Be sure she gets plenty of water by mixing extra water into her food. Even though Gracie has no LB issues, she always gets 2 tsp of water into every helping of food and she drinks well on her own, too.

Sending healing vines!

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 +6=90 LB scare

((Deborah)) - Poor Shasta! I hope this morning was a one-time event, for both of your sakes! I wish I had words of wisdom to share, but it sounds like you've already gotten some good advice. I think I'd take her in Monday, if possible, just to be sure. Hoping to hear all is well.

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 +6=90 LB scare

Oh, ((Deborah)), I know how you're feeling.
During Ripley's recent bouts w/constipation, I've been able to bring her in for the vet to quickly "feel her up," & let me know how backed up she was. With Shasta's temperament, I can see how that would be challenging.
I'm sorry she's been straining. Poor girl. I'm glad she was able to pass some stool, and glad she seems relieved.
I hope there's an easy solution (like additions to her food -- ECID, but if you want a list of what I'm adding to R's food, just let me know).

Re: 2/23 Shasta AMPS=264 +1.5=232 +3=163 +6=90 +8=139 LB sca

Gosh darn it...I just wrote a really good post, responding back to everyone's posts, hit send...login page. cat(2)_steam

So, here goes my group response... :-D

Thank you to everyone that has been checking in on me and more importantly, Shasta! FDMB is truly a wealth of knowledge and support...even on weekends!!!! I ended up not taking Shasta to the e-vet and she doesn't seem any worse for the wear. After I got her +3, I ran a few errands and went up to school to get a few things done (ended up staying much longer...amazing how time flies when you're actually getting stuff done and not interrupted by emails, students, etc.) When I got home, I got a +6 reading...90  Great, but slightly unusual for her at +6. She had finished her food that I left out so I put out some more. After eating some, she snuggled up next to me while I worked and wrote my previous (now cyber-lost post!). She is now resting in her kitty bed next to the window.

To answer everyone's questions:
She does get miralax in her breffis everyday. Up until this past week, she was very regular (minus the ribbon fiasco in January.) This past week, she pooped every other day. They were decent sized, but not enough to make up for 2 days worth. When she finally pooped this morning, it was firm, good color, 4 pretty good sized pieces (see pic below...only saved 3 pieces in case we needed to go to e-vet). They appear pretty lubricated (not dry) and man do they smell!!! (most likely odor made worse by not allowing her time to cover up!)

I always add extra water to her food. However, I noticed that she was drinking more water from her water bowl these past 2 weeks...coincided with her "higher" numbers, so i didn't think much about it except that it might be time to pump up her insulin dose (as suggested by several.) The juice seems to be working...lower numbers, less water bowl water intake.

I am not consistent on the coconut oil. Last time I used it, I guess I put it up in the cabinet and then forgot about it until this morning. In my frustrated mood, having not heard back from my vet until an hour after I left a message, I was trying to think of anything I could to help her system move things better...remembered the coconut oil, gave her some and now it is sitting next to the miralax. Marje, I will pick up some Beechnut squash tomorrow morning at the store.

My goal, first thing Monday morning, is to call my vet and see if I can make an appointment (or just walk in) after school?! IF, by some horrible chance, something else happens with her tonight or tomorrow, I will drive like the wind to the e-vet (40 minutes away :? ) and pray that they take care of her.

If she seems to be doing ok tomorrow, I think I may do a little carpet cleaning...too many butt scoots and pukus spots make me question what my bare feet are really walking on! :o Thank you ALL for your advice, well wishes, healing vines and support. Don't know what we'd do without you!!!

Now, no LB condo would be complete without a picture of the poo in question... Do they look normal to you guys?!
Shasta's poop

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146

Ok...that is a disgusting photo     I come here to laugh because your condo is always funny and I get POO PHOTOS!!

If she has a UTI she would probably be either going to the box frequently, squatting, and straining to pee or she might try to do that outside of the box....somewhere she does not associate with pain. UTI's are painful.

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146

Concern...Shasta has not peed or pooped since this morning @ ~ +1.

She's not acting uncomfortable, but I'm starting to freak out. Her PMBG is the lowest I've shot, which concerns me in light of this morning's incident. I've been feeding her 12% FF Elegant Medley and she's still dropping pretty quickly.

Advice? Should I be as concerned as I am?!

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 no pee/poo

Is she eating? If she pooed earlier today, I wouldn't worry about that unless she acts constipated. I'm not sure I'd worry about the peeing either unless she is really, really regular with how often and when she pees. If she has a UTI, she will try to pee....is she doing that?

The +1 was probably a food spike and her +2 is not that far off her PS. You can expect a typical lantus cycle (active) so I'd be sure you keep an eye on her BG. But if she's acting ok and eating, I'd not get too worried about the no pee right now.

eta: she dropped a lot faster the pm cycle of 2/16.

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 no pee/poo

How often does she pee and/or poop? Gabby poops once a day or once every other day. Pee -- well, that's a different story. She pees 2 - 3 times a day or more.

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 no pee/poo

She is eating just fine. Ate several snacks throughout the day; ate all of her dinner (I had to hold her bowl for her, but she did eat!); 2 small snacks of 12% FFEMF tonight. She usually only poops once a day, but I'm just concerned by all the food she's eaten and it's not coming out yet. nailbite_smile Maybe tomorrow. As for peeing, she usually leaves me 3-4 throughout the day/night. Past the pee pile from this morning, she has not made any attempts at peeing. Won't even go and get in the LB. :YMSIGH:

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 no pee/poo

Just watch her. If you see her trying to pee outside the box and straining, I'd take her to the ER.

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 no pee/poo

Ok. Sorry to be a worry wort. She's just acting all calm and stuff. I feel like it's the calm before the storm. @-)

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 no pee/poo

I checked earlier today when I got back from running errands...nothing. And since I got home, she's been by my side or at least within eyeball range. The few times she did wonder off...I "quietly" followed...nothing.

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 +3=125 no pee/poo

She's coming down nice and steady...not too fast. We'll all be around tonight if you get more worried but I'm hoping she is just fine.

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 +3=125 no pee/poo

Thank you, Marje. This is one of those decisions that I will second guess all night and all tomorrow...should I have taken her to the e-vet today or wait it out like I've done. @-) :YMSIGH: FDMB is the best. Thank you.

p.s. She is preening right now...from the back of the couch...right in my ear!

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 +3=125 +4=119 no pee/

So, I'm reading your condo and say aloud, "Deborah has posted a picture of her cat's poo!" Jessica comes racing over to see!

Hope you and Shasta have a nice, peaceful night!

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 +4=119 +5=161 no pee/

Yes Libby, I am the one that posts pictures of Shasta's poo. I also have pictures of her pukus (hairball and non-hairball pics!) I'm getting more and more paranoid as this FD progresses!!! nailbite_smile Figure, I better take pictures just in case something doesn't look right!

Marje, I feel like I missed your post earlier as you laughed at my poo picture. Glad I could provide some laughter in your life! :-D

Re: 2/23 Shasta PMPS=167 +1=209 +2=146 +4=119 +5=161 no pee/

Is the heater on, Deborah? The heater thus warm air make it very drying for the body. I'd add more water to their food. Sometimes syringe feed them additional water from light tuna or boiled chicken. Makes it like a game for them & they will love to play along.
Rosy's a year on Lantus & canned food. Ive noticed she's sometimes constipated. I'm adding Miralax & sometimes smashed steamed pumpkin to her food.
Dont worry too much Deborah. For sure our kitties are like us, dont want peple to watch over us whenever we visit the loo

Hi Helen, no heater for us...it was in the 80's today! I do add water and miralax (mornings only) to her food and plan on picking up some Beechnut squash tomorrow to add to her food...next thing I know, her stool will be too loose!! Hope you, DH and Rosy are doing well today. Shasta and I are getting ready for bed.

Marje, I feel it's the least I can do for all the help and advice you guys give...I give a little humor!

Great news...Shasta just peed!!! Good size, no straining! I moved her LB to just outside my bedroom door so that I could listen for her tonight and like the curious cat she is, she came to investigate and finally peed! She just crawled into her carrier, but I will tempt her out so that I can whisk her off to bed with me!

Thank you all for the help and advice. I will update everyone in the morning...hopefully, not any sooner! Blessings and good night!

Oh my    on the poo pic!!! I have been missing you and your condo and just catching up on the ending.
That is some healthy, but gross looking, poop!!  Mags is very envious, I have to tell you.
Seriously though, I hope Shasta will be okay. Mags just had diagnosed a bad UTI that spread to her kidneys and is on Orbax for six weeks. Sending lots of healing vines to Shasta.
