Hate it when I get error messages and I get so mad at my self when I give a fur shot. Hope you have a good day at work.

Bummer on the partial fur shot, it has happened to everyone at some point. There is nothing you can do about but wait until the next shot time. As for the meter error that really sucks also. Just try to stay calm, I can tell you that when I am stressed or nervous Sami seems to pick up on it and it makes her a bit more fidgety and more likely to have problems getting blood on the test strip or getting insulin into her. Once you get the hang of everything your nerves will calm down and maybe that will help Oren as well.

pmps test was smooth as silk, 1 and done. however, not clearing yet: 495, possibly due to flipping fur shot this a.m. I'm pretty sure it was a good injection this time too (damn i hate screwing up w/ those fur shots!!!). perhaps i shouldn't have left food out for him in feeder; but since he cleared highs once quickly, i was nervous ... hope to get a few more tests in tonight and see how he's reacting

He's pretty likely to be high until mid-day tomorrow. He's still in a bounce from those pretty greens 2 days ago. Tomorrow when you go to work, leave him plenty of low carb food in case he needs it.

When you test him tonight, if he's still high, i wouldn't bother to test again til morning. Hopefully he'll give you a yellow or a blue to let you know the bounce is beginning to clear - depends on the cat. I see a yellow and blue before he got to green last time though, so he may give you a little heads-up with one of those.

fur shots are just part of the game. You will get better at it all. no worries! Sorry about the neosporin - you do want to wipe it off in the morning before you test again. there will be just a little remaining to make the hair kind of greasy looking - that will be enough to act like vaseline in keeping the blood from instantly soaking up into the hair or skin. His ears no doubt appreciated the pain relief. I tried it on myself and it's really amazing at taking the owie out.

should I just do a PM+2 then? or perhaps +2 and +5 if I can make it? i assume also the food should be in the first half of cycle, like i did today in the autofeeder?

I'd probably get a pm+3 or 4 and if it was still high (300 or more) I'd get a good night's sleep and recheck at amps. Take advantage of a bounce cycle by sleeping when you can. Some people call these "save-a-strip" days.

bounces override the normal Lantus cycle. So although the +2 is a great predictor when you're not in a bounce cycle, it doesn't mean anything during a bounce.

Because meters are allowed by law to have a 20% variance, when BGs get high the tests might move around, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the blood sugar is moving. For example, if you get a 350, the 20% variance would mean that it might be 70 points more or less (280-420) and that could be from tests done on the very same drop of blood using 2 different strips.

When blood sugar is low that 20% is fairly insignificant - which is fine because we really care most about low numbers. If you get a 40, it could be 8 points either way (32 - 48) which is more important to know that he's under 50.

Does that all make sense?

thanks so much Julie; I guess it makes sense, as much as any of this stuff does right now! But even the 20% low range of 495 is pretty darn high. So I guess at +3 or 4 I'd be hoping for something in the 300s.. if its a bigger drop, say over 200 pt. drop, I might need to put food out overnight?

It never hurts to leave out food. Most cats when they start out with getting regulated will take the full 3 days to clear a bounce. Their bodies are really not used to normal numbers so they react big to them. As the cat gets used to normal numbers, their body will begin to accept it as normal, and then the bounces will get shorter in duration and less intense - eventually a "bounce" might only be a couple of hours at 150 before the cat goes back into green numbers.

That's why i wouldn't worry too much about tonight. If it's something under 300, then i'd consider getting another test. I don't have a crystal ball, but that's what i'm thinking.

I can check back in with you - what time will you get the next test? and help you figure out if you need to test again tonight?

Right now for me it's 5:23pm.

if I do a +3 it will be 10:00 pm for me, that would leave me an hour or 2 (i can manage till midnight ok, though my alarm goes off at 6.30; I have 10 hr. work days). You're so sweet to offer, thanks!!!

unless of course you are me and "just want to get more data" lol

I hate when I give fur shots, too....they so suck!!! I would agree....early on, it can get a bit exhausting as you are learning so much and trying to do so much, kitties and you are adjusting to tons of changes.....get the sleep tonight if you can :) I wish I would have listened to people more when they would tell me that.....

i think my problem w/ the fur shots is not that he moves, but that i pull the needle out too soon w/o being sure I've pushed the plunger the whole way... I think I'm feeling like I would, 'get that needle out quick' (not a fan of needles myself!)... i just have to breathe and remember to push firmly, then back out. I look like a crazy person now, smelling the injection site after to see if i got it all!

ah, maybe try to just slow the whole process down.

what time will you test tonight? I've been on the board for more than 3.5 hrs and i'm going to get off, except to come back and check on you.

nighty night! if he read the manual and follows the 3-day-bounce routine, it'd be mid-day tomorrow. if you're off at work, food is your safety net. leave him plenty of regular low carb.
