High again this morning.

And a little fur shot- not all of it, just some of it.

Set up an appt for today to get some lab work done and check on her ketones.

Re: 2-22 Sneakers

I am glad to hear about the vet appointment. Hope you will get some answers. You've been working hard and gotten confusing results.

You might take in your ketone meter and make sure it is working right?

Re: 2-22 Sneakers

Good Luck with the vet visit! I am glad you are inquiring about the ketones. Sub Q fluids are a very good tool in fighting low grade ketones. I gave them to Kitty for months-- trust me, it isn't as bad as it sounds!!! In fact, Kitty didn't seem to mind them at all. I would encourage you to ask your vet about them.

Once Again Good Luck!

Sub Q fluids? I have read the words on this site but have no idea what they are.

Research time  . Good thing I work through lunch.

Re: 2-22 Sneakers

Sue-
My vet doesn't have a ketone meter  . Since I test both with the meter and the sticks I think the meter is reading accurately as it is between negative and a trace (the bottle say trace is 5).

I will take my bg meter and see how it compares to theirs.

She said the bloodwork on the ketones will cost about $70. Good thing I have a Sneakers budgeted in my income tax return money... that I will be getting sometime...

Re: 2-22 Sneakers

Sub-q fluids.... it comes in a 1000ml bag usually, and is usually lactated ringers. They can also add stuff to it to enable you to give a needed supplement. In Bob's case, they added potassium due to his having low levels. There's a long tube that looks like aquarium tubing attached with a shut off valve, and a needle on the end. You hang the bag up and stick the needle in like you do with the insulin syringe, and the fluids gravity feed under the skin. It looks scary because the needle looks huge compared to a syringe, but it isn't as bad as it looks. Normally you do 100ml treatments, once a day but it depends on what you are treating and what the vet prescribes. People do this to rehydrate, to treat pacreatitis, for ketones, and other things I am sure. Lots of experience with this on the board....

Re: 2-22 Sneakers

Well... I came home and tested her real quick and then carted her off to the vet along with my curve sheet (I got complements on it). +9.3 was a 285.

Apparently it is hard to draw blood from a cat- it looked quite painful for Sneakers as well  ! He got enough to do one test- cbc but Sneakers pulled away before he could get enough to do a complete work up. he did not want to sedate her with her being diabetic. I will find out the results tomorrow.

Here is the thinkg- two weeks ago he went to a seminar/class with a diabetes guru as a speaker. This person- I did not get his name- said that cats can't get bg poisoning like dogs and people do so high numbers for them isn't a bad thing (as long as it is under a 1000- then he would worry). And ketones don't really mean anything... He apparently sees at least one diabetic cat a day.

I might be getting her FD treated elsewhere and keep him for my check-ups and stuff. I like that he is close but I feel that he hasn't really done any research on this.

She needs her teeth cleaned as well so if they have to sedate her for that I would request that they take blood as well. I have rubbed her jaw line- top and bottom- kind of hard and she doesn't flinch or growl so I think her teeth are okay- they just need a good brushing.

Re: 2-22 Sneakers- update

Of course we aren't vets but what he is saying doesn't make much sense to me. Surely he didn't mean 1000 on a blood glucose meter? I am assuming they only go up to 600 for a reason...

And as we've said, the danger of ketones is when they are combined with poor appetite and infection. Then the cat can develop DKA which is deadly. Measuring ketones is one of the monitors to keep a diabetic cat safe.

Have you asked on Health if anyone lives nearby and might know a good FD vet?

Re: 2-22 Sneakers- update

I did earlier but got no reply.

So at work, we have a classifieds section run on email and i posted if anyone was taking care of a diabetic cat and if they wanted to talk.

I got recommendations for vets in Searcy (30 min away), Jacksonville (20 min), and two in Little Rock (10-20 min)- but there was one in North Little Rock where I live for a sick cat- but not with FD. I'll try on Health again.

I kind of want that 'diabetes guru's' name so I won't choose his clinic !
