Hello everyone,

Okay, so last night Sami was surfing for over 5 hours and then all of a sudden out of no where BAM! PINK!

Now, there might be a reason for it and I need to find out if this could happen. I know that when a cat is scared or frightened their sugar will go up, but is it instantaneous? The reason I ask is because right at Sami's +8 test the alarm when off in our house and scared the crap out of us. we got it shut off quickly but I am sure if startled Sami also. I tested her within a couple of minutes and got the 313. Is it possible that this spike is due to being startled, or is she just bouncing around?

I figure even if it is from being startled with a normal working pancreas the number would come down quickly, but because Sami's pancreas isn't working normally the sugar level just remained high.

Anyway, I guess my question is, is this just a bounce, or was it caused by being scared?

Hope everyone has a wonderful day. Healing vines being sent out to all the Sugar Kitties and their Mom's and Dad's.

I would say that it is a bounce, the pink started last night and has still continued. The bounce would be from the blue bg's

@Darin & Charlie Okay, thanks. I just don't understand how sometimes she can surf the BLUE for nearly 2 days and then hit GREEN before she bounces, but other times she is so all over the place. Will I ever understand?

Interesting questions. I can answer the first part, yes the BG will spike pretty much instantaneously. In a non-diabetic cat I imagine it would come down again quite quickly but whether it could precipitate a longer run of high numbers in a diabetic cat I'm not sure. I'm leaning towards no because a lot of us get spikes at the vet that are gone when we get them home but now you've got me wondering why that happens if there's not natural insulin being released to bring it down...

This definitely looks like a bounce now though.

@purrdydolly So I guess what you are saying is that it is possible for the sugar to spike instantaneously, and not come down due to limited insulin production in the pancreas, but not likely to continue to go up after the incident was resolved? Is that what you are saying? I am just wondering since I tested her almost immediately after the incident maybe she would have gone higher and I just caught it on the rise? I accidentally slept through the +10 test so I have no way of know if she was higher or lower at that time.

It will spike instantaneously with stress but I'm not sure about it not coming down again due to limited insulin production. I'm leaning towards a no on that (due to vet stress spikes coming down). I'm just not sure why, maybe the adrenalin that comes with the stress burns it off?? I couldn't see it continuing to rise after the stress is resolved.

Yep, bouncing. Then days of doing well or back to back cycles of green/low blue and then up they go. It's the FD dance. Bouncing from too fast a drop or going low makes sense. Bouncing for no apparent reason is plain frustrating. We just go along for the ride which can get wild at times.

@purrdydolly Adrenalin would make sense. Sami has come down into the Mid 200's, but seem seems to be in a holding pattern. I changed up how I fed her today. Before I was pretty much giving her as much food as she wanted, and I was noticing that she was eating upwards and sometimes more than 2 (5.5 oz) cans of food a day. After going back and checking notes from when Sami was on insulin before I realized that she was only eating 2 (3 oz) cans a day, so currently she is eating a lot more and she is 5 years older. So I am assuming that she is eating WAY too much.

What I did today is reinstitute the MiniMeals (MM), which consisted of 1 tsp each of two different varieties of food. She received a MiniMeal (MM) at +1, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and I am also planning to give her another MM at +9 in hopes it will help her surf to PMPS.

The first couple of MM Sami scarfed right down, by +4 she would eat a little and then leave the rest, sometimes until the next MM. Other than the first few meals she didn't seem like she was hungry and needing more, and maybe it was just enough to satisfy her belly until the next MM.

@tiffmaxee Yeah, I hear you. I can understand a bounce with long stretches or lower numbers, but this was out of the blue. I hope she will hold steady for the rest of the afternoon and hopefully she will be back in the BLUE tonight.

@milosmommy What is most frustrating is there is no rhyme or reason. She does well for two days straight and then gets in the GREEN and can't seem to recover. I am going to give her fluids tonight to see if that might help a bit.

Well, Sami did have a nice drop from AMPS to PMPS, but I would have like to seen a bit more movement. I gave her fluids within 10 minutes after shot time. Tonight I gave fluids in the scruff, as always, and insulin shot in the Right side of the Belly. Sami will be on her MiniMeals tonight as well. It creates a bit more work for me, but if it helps her get regulated that I am all for it.

Sami is really taking her sweet time to come down today. I should be really happy that she is at least in the YELLOW, but with all the blue she has seen recently I don't understand why she isn't seeing more of it now. I am hoping the MiniMeals are helping a little, but it might take a couple of cycles for them to really kick in.

to me it looks like she's still in a bounce from the green streak 3 nights ago. When a cat is bouncing, they don't necessarily stay high the whole time. I think she could conceivably get into high blues but still not completely clear the bounce. I may be wrong, but counting forward 3 days from that green streak would be tonight. I'd be wondering if she'll get back into greens tonight.

The other possibility is that sometimes a cat will seem to be able to keep in decent numbers for a while, and then it's like their pancreas just kind of gives up because it got tired. You could be seeing both things. The reason i'm still suspicious she hasn't cleared the bounce from 2/19 is that she hasn't gotten back into green since then.

I doubt it's anything you're doing/not doing at this point. Let's see what she does tonight.

I don't think you have to feed her quite so often unless you see that it's doing something helpful. Most people only go to the hourly mini meals if they consistently have fast dives after the shot that they are trying to prevent. Sami doesn't seem to dive, thankfully. I fed punkin at preshot (3oz) and +3 (1.5oz) and other than that just gave him cooked chicken breast as a pokey treat. It does sound like she may have been getting too much food. You don't want her to gain weight - fat is the enemy of insulin, so you want to help her stay at a healthy weight.

I saw part of your video on Mikey's condo - i'm impressed at both your volume of yarn (WOW) and how fast you move, LOL! I'm not a knitter, but do appreciate the skill

@julie & punkin (ga)

Yes, I agree that Sami was definitely getting too much food prior to today. The main reason that I went to the MiniMeals was because I was reading through Sami's old Condo's from 2010 and once I covered to the MiniMeals back then Sami never saw a number higher than 100, except a few times when I went against the rules and gave her too much HC or DRY :nailbiting:. I figured I would give it a try and if I didn't see a considerable improvement with the MiniMeals I would just go back to feeding at PS, +3 and +6 and maybe a small snack at +9.

Looking at Sami's spreadsheet it looks like she sort of running in the same pattern that she did after the last round of BLUE/GREEN streak. Great numbers for 2 days and then a bounce, which she never seemed to recover from. Yes, tonight is the 6th cycle since the bounce started and I am really hoping to see some better numbers. I am considering staying with this dose through 8 cycles to see if she comes out of it, but at that point if we are not seeing GREEN or at least getting really close then I think maybe an increase is in order.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what she decides she wants to do this time. I am really trying to keep my patience pants on, but it is really hard. The only thing I have been able to distract myself with today is playing Sims and SimCity. I haven't even knit a stitch all weekend, and that is unheard of in my world.

LOL! Yes, I do have quite a large yarn stash. It is like art in my house. LOL!

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, in fact you read right. +4 = 130. I had to test her twice because after the way her numbers were going today I didn't think she would drop more than 100 points in 2 hours.

So I don't know if it is the MiniMeals, the Fluids or if Sami is simply coming down from her Bouncy Bounce! Maybe a combination of all three. But no matter what it is I am happy to see her under 150 again. I hope she will surf the low 100's and maybe even visit the GREEN before AMPS. She has three more MiniMeals tonight +5, +6 and +9, which I will set the automatic feeder for. I am off to bed until +6, but I do plan on testing at +6 and depending on what that number is either let her go until morning or test again at either +8, +9, or +10 depending on what that number is at +6.

That's right folks, +5 - 83! I am back to bed for another hour. I will test again at +6. Sami just had a MM and we will see if she can surf this all night.

Don't you love Julie's crystal ball! :D:D Time to surf it Sami!

I saw your video too, including the kitty cameos.:) Neko would love to play in those shelves! Ask Julie about her fabric stash, I'm pretty sure she has one like I do.;)
