Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

Good morning ~O)
Just got caught up on your condos this week. What a rough one for you and Pepper. Hugs and scritches and all kinds of vines coming your way.
I don't know about the Pepsid. But have you tried different water sources/containers? Dripping faucet for interest? Maybe a drop of tuna juice? Or diff temp of water or flicking in the water with your finger?. Definitely sounds like nausea tho
C'mon Pep. Drink up sweetie.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

Come on sweet boy, you HAVE to eat. Nancy, Pepcid might help - I know it does with KT when his tummy's not feeling well. It might also be that he's not eaten enough that his stomach acid is making him feel worse. You might also try syringe feeding a few bites and see if that kick-starts eating too. When I've gone too long without eating, the first few bites of anything makes me feel nauseous until I eat a few bites then let it settle.

Lots of thoughts and prayers from here for both of you...

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

If Pepper won't take pill pockets now, you could ground up the 1/4 tab Pepcid and mix with water in a syringe to get him down him. I haven't had to do this though.

Eat please Pepper!

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

(((Nancy)))
I'm sorry Pepper isn't eating.......
Pepcid tastes very bad according to Lucy.
I usually give it wrapped in a small cube of fish - tuna sashimi or grilled salmon, if she willingly eat fish.
If I have to push it in her, I used a very small gel capsule, which worked better than giving it on its own.
If you don't have it at hand, I've read someone mention butter on the surface, especially on the cut section because that's where they would taste from most.
I hope Pepcid helps. Sending eating vines to Pepper.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

I'll try pilling first without crushing, and do the crushing and syringing if pilling absolutely doesn't work, because crushing it will make it taste really really bad.
Can you not pry open his mouth and throw it at the back of his throat, and shut the mouth tight? It must be followed by some water via syringe, so it's not stuck in his throat.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

I crush the 1/4th tab in a spoon and mix with enough water to syringe it up - it won't 'absorb' into the water, it will still be powdery. At the same time, I fill another syringe with just plain water. I shake the pepcid syringe good and give it to him followed immediately behind that with water. KT doesn't seem to mind it but Dakota HATES it.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

I would also suggest that if this doesn't turn around soon (like in a couple of hours), you get Pepper in to the vet. I'd sooner have you see you regular vet today than have to wait until Monday or have to use an ER if something is going on.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

Thanks everyone, for the directions.

Sienne, I was wondering if I should just take him into his vet. I guess I ought to. Think I'll call now.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

Paws crossed for Pepper, keep us posted on the vetty visit.

Cerenia injections helped Zener when he went through a period of not eating or drinking. Hugs to you Nancy, and we are sending healing vines to Pepper.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

I hope you get Pepper in to see the vet and sending good vet visit vines. Please feel better, Pepper cat_pet_icon

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

fingers crossed for a good vet visit, Nancy.

let us know - we're cheering for the best for both of you. :YMHUG:

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

Good decision to take Pepper to the vet. I hope you can get him in today. Not eating or drinking is a very bad thing if not nipped in the bud. Did you see him smacking his lips or anything like that? That's usually what cats do when they're nauseated.

Sending good vetty, tummy and appy vines. I'll be watching for your update with paws crossed. :YMHUG:

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

We just got back from the vet. She didn't find anything obviously wrong except that he was dehydrated. She gave him 50 ml of fluids. She didn't want to give cerenia, which she said she might normally do, because she wasn't sure about using it with heart meds, but said Pepcid should be fine. Thanks for all the help and support!

Re: 2/22 Pepper - Not eating or drinking

I hope the fluids and/or Pepcid AC will help Pepper get some appy back. Sending feel good and appy vines to him, and hugs to you :YMHUG:

Re: 2/22 Pepper - AMPS 417, +3 494

Nancy, you might want to try IAMS Maximum Calorie. It is high in calories and like 9% carbs. It comes in the thickness of a milkshake, so easy to syringe feed. Here's a good video on syringe feeding.
Sending super strong eating vines and feel better vines to Pepper.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - AMPS 417, +3 494

No, it's a veterinary food.
You're on the west coast, right? I always thought you were for some reason. Whenever I go to California, I get some for J.D. from his vet there. I can't find any vets around here that sell it. I just ordered a case of it from PetFoodDirect on Monday, they got the prescription from my vet on Tuesday, and it arrived on Thursday, but then you have to buy a whole case at a time, while a vet may sell you a couple cans. They are 333 calories per 5.5oz can.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - AMPS 417, +3 494

Has he eaten anything today? I just went out and bought a Magic Bullet and intend to use it for cat food if I ever need it to grind it into syringable food. Cats need to eat. Please let us know how he is doing. We are concerned here.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - AMPS 417, +3 494

He hasn't eaten more than a few licks of Fancy Feast, a few bites of dry kibble, and some freeze-dried chicken treats. I was just contemplating starting to syringe feed.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - AMPS 417, +3 494

Worth a try. Will he eat more freeze dried chicken on his own? Wh about regular cooked fresh chicken?

Re: 2/22 Pepper - AMPS 417, +3 494

He just ate a small bowl of Fancy Feast on his own. He used to love cooked chicken breast, but he didn't eat it last night. I'll try again tonight.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - AMPS 417, +3 494

Great news that Pepper is eating, even if it's just a bit. :-D That will make him feel better. If you can't find the Iams Max Cal, some vets sell the Royal Canin Recovery RS. It's just 7% carbs but not as many calories. It's also the perfect texture for syringe feeding.

Re: 2/22 Pepper - AMPS 417, +3 494

glad she's eating a bit. i found a bigger opening syringe really helpful - i can't tell you the size because i borrowed it from a friend, but the opening was large enough that it didn't keep getting clogged with food. she got it at a pharmacy. if you have trouble with clogging, that might be helpful. hospital pharmacies are open on weekends if you need one tomorrow.
