After a good night for Elian we are starting the day off much better than yesterday and I'm a happy camper. Will be monitoring thru the day.

Lets see if I can get yesterday's condo in here via phone:

Re: 2/22 ELIAN - amps 266 Startibg the day w/a smile!

Hi guys .. we like these sunny yellows .. they can lead to blues! Have a great weekend!

Re: 2/22 ELIAN - amps 266 Starting the day w/a smile! 426 +2

Bummer - started sunny and hit the dreaded red - not even a stop in pinkusville! Come on back down and make your Mamabean smile, Elian!

Looks like time for an increase. The bounce cleared last night, and he only went down to 171 at nadir.

Onward and upward! (up in dose, not numbers, ok Elian?)

Hi Susie,
Good luck with the increase. AS I get told many a time, post your yesterday's condo in your 1st post.
Have a great day.

Thanks everybody. Will check him again and see where he is. Shelly - I'm posting from my phone - finally figured out how to update my SS from here - havent figured out how to get my link here. I usually do it when I'm on my laptop.

Re: 2/22 ELIAN - amps 266; 426 +2; 356 +4.5, 444 +7

I'm guessing that tomorrow morning would be a good time to go back to 3.25u? Will continue testing and posting before doing anything.

Re: 2/22 ELIAN - amps 266; 426 +2; 356 +4.5, 444 +7

I'd start it tonight. I was just about to recommend you increase when I saw Libby's post. No sense in waiting any longer to start getting him back to good numbers.

Re: 2/22 ELIAN - amps 266; 426 +2; 356 +4.5, 444 +7

I CAN do it tonight but I can monitor him much better tomorrow rather than thru the night - I worry about him dropping low again and would worry about not catching it. It's been a rough week and I'm stressed beyond stressed. Of course if it has to be done tonight I will do it. Just saying I'll be way more alert tomorrow.

you can wait till morning. you shoot late and you don't want him dropping like he does when you're sleeping....

Thanks Caryl - was hoping I could. Six dogs here and the German shepherd has terrible separation anxiety. Still. After years with me AND on meds. Ten days is too long and we're all beyond stressed. Sunday can't get here soon enough - when his parents come back from their ten day cruise. They'll be happy and relaxed and I'll be on the verge of a breakdown. Haha! But the $$$ is too good to turn down. This time. They have me booked for two more vacations coming up. Ugh. Gotta decide if I want to do it again. Anyway, like I said - I can focus better tomorrow. Will post updates. PS just wondering - is it possible that Lantus isn't the best choice for Elian or do we still need more time?

please don't worry about switching insulin yet.

Elian has only been on Lantus for just over a month. Give it time! He's doing well, getting a good bit of green, we just have to "train" his liver to not overreact to the green. We do that by showing him green, over and over again until his little body realizes "hey, those numbers don't hurt me, they feel good!" He is also seeing some glucose toxicity, which will require more insulin to break through but then he should start seeing better numbers. His numbers are not unusual at all for a newly diagnosed cat, just hang in there.

The other insulin options are:

Levimer - which works in the same fashion as Lantus - however, it is a different formula than lantus and some cats do better with levimer than lantus - not sure why....

Prozinc - this insulin is a little more forgiving in when and how it is dosed. Meaning that if you can't stick to a 12/12 schedule, this will allow a it more leeway than lantus or levimer.

These three insulin - lantus, levimer and prozinc are really the only ones recommended for kitties. All the others are short acting, harsher insulins and tougher to regulate with. It is possible, but it's more of a challenge and the insulin may not last the full 12 hours as the three I mentioned. Which is why we try to steer people to one of these three.

Personally, I would give this a bit more time to see if you can find the right dose for Elian before changing insulin. Knowing that you do have other options is good and you can spend this time learning about each of the insulins above so if you decide to change insulin, you know which one to choose next.

Thanks so much Hillary. We will stick it out a bit longer - we ARE seeing some good numbers so I'll be patient.... at least until this vial is no good any more!

think that is a good idea - I see today's condo and that you got some traction into blues....so yes, this insulin is working and give it time to do it's thing. and if it doesn't then you can decide - in the meantime, read up on the other choices available, so if you do change, you understand what you are changing to.
