Yesterday was...... BOUNCE day in MannieLand. Alas.... our streak of blue days came to an abrupt halt, with Mannie visiting all the unmentionable  floors. Aiyee. It was good to see that he brought things down over night. I hope for a good day today, more blues would be so cool! Mannie - here's to you, some very strong feel better, be blue vines. Lubs ya big guy! cat_pet_icon

Internal Medicine's Labs and Vetty consult: I was finally able to talk with the IM Specialist yesterday morning. She was waiting to hear from UMinn on Mannie's labs, and finally had to call them to track them down... AIyee! So.... This was a endocrinology panel, looking specifically to check aldosterone levels in Mannie. His are elevated. This alone explains the potassium levels as it is my understanding that excess of this hormone will reduce potassium levels, raise salt levels, create some of the issues Mannie is having. It also appears that Mannie's hormonal values are up. SO.... based on this, and his physical condition: FD, hyperTension, low potassium, muscle weakness, abnormal gait, pot belly, coat condition, etc etc etc the vet wants to test for Cushings. We are either dealing with that or hyperaldosteronism. The symptoms for both are similar. As far as Cushings goes he does not have the skin issues that these kitties do develop, nor is he a high dose kitty. Anyways.... so now we test for Cushings, and depending on what that reveals, treatment will be adjusted. If confirmed then we will need to determine which type he has... For now we are continuing with the potassium supplements. For now I'm just trying to get a grip on all of this, and what does it all mean for Mannie. We remain optimistic. he deserves at least that much. :-D

All is well in MannieLand. :-D :-D :-D As far as Mannie is concerned - all is truly well in MannieLand. He continues to do his things as he see fit. We had sun yesterday afternoon, so I let him outside. Off he went, to check on the tiny suburb in the back yard known as NannerVille. I did follow him at a distance, if only to make sure he stayed in his yard. It was 30 minutes of total bliss for him. He visited all his fav paces, walk the perimeter, secured the south 40, laid in the grass and the ground cover. The whole time he was out that little nose was sniffin' a mile a minute. It truly was the best afternoon. Later that night When it was test time he was sleeping on the nanners. I went to get him and he looked at Elsa, who was sitting nearby. The look was : "it's OK, you can play". and so she did. I could have sworn he nodded his head in approval. That too was quite the moment. Mannie - you so totally rock. Appy has been good, CPC yesterday and this morning, LB is normal, Ketones tests have been negative. Test was good this morning, as was the shoot. I think I can still say: Normalcy in MannieLand. :-D

Have a great day everyone! I am back on DGS duty for the rest of the week. Today will be a swim day for Nicholas. WOO HOO! Back in the pool! Paws crossed on the weather, as I hope we can get some outdoor time too. ..... I hope to visit condos when time permits, it is so tough to do while he is here. I will miss you guys! Think blue, think green kitties!

Hey everybody! What's up! Ok... washed out at the dunes yesterday. let's try again today. I so wanna platy in the sand!! Slide in the dunes! Build a bonfire! Tess - how about today? can we huh???? Well if that is a no go, how about back to the beach? the boardwalks and all those shops. maybe they have an ice cream one...I wonder if we can go parasailing at the beach.... You guys in? Let me know.... I am ready for anything! ~~ Mannie

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303 - IM Labs

Morning Michelle

Sheesh, all these issues  Mannie is such a trooper - a "brave little soldier" as my Mum used to say :-D

Have a great day!

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303 - IM Labs

Sorry to hear about the lab results, but it is best to remain optimistic. Multiple issues can be juggled and I know that Mannie is a model patient. Sending healing vines that it is nothing major and that the potassium supplements does the trick. ((((Michelle)))) Have a great day at the pool! I always wonder, do you get in the pool with Nicholas? Oh and I LOVE your underwater camera. Very very cool.

Hey Mannie! Playing in the sand sounds awesome. The dunes were so much fun but i am ready for some chillaxin. Pick me up, k? - Tarragon

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303 - IM Labs

Morning Bruce ~O) ~O) ~O) oh yeah, never a dull moment here. :-D I like that - a brave little soldier. well said mum!

Morning Melissa ~O) ~O) ~O) yupp, optimistic it is! I hope so too: nothing major. Paws crossed. THX on the day and DGS. I love my underwater camera: a panasonic Lumix - does great! and yes - in the pool with him. We do all of it together. slides etc. HAHA: I get as wet as he does.

Tarragon - DUDE!! Let's roll! Me too on the chillaxin' part. best get sunscreen... See ya soon!~ Mannie

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303 - IM Labs

Good Morning, guys,

Mannie, that double shot espresso with African beans is just the ticket for this morning. Thanks, Kitteh Barista!

Michelle, it is best to be optimistic (I'm trying to be while waiting on Rusty's tests, too). You will have the additional tests and then know what the plan of action is. In the meantime, your boy is doing well, doing his normal things, and making the best of it all. Love the way he allowed Elsa to play with his nanners.
Have a good Nicholas day!

Hugs,
Ella & Rusty

Yo Mannie, I need a day in the dunes to get the rest of the vetty smell off. Thanks for beginning the process with the KTSS last night, but I still smell! See ya soon.
Your pal,
Rusty

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303 - IM Labs

{{{{{{{{{{MICHELLE & MANNIE}}}}}}}}}} I've got my fingers crossed for both both, and I wish for him to make a full and speedy recovery from whatever is ailing him. Hang in there, girl.

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303 - IM Labs

Morning Michelle, so glad you were able to reach the IM Vet and she was able to call the Lab and get results. It sounds like now that you have some plans in place for further testing, you will know what you're dealing with, and it sounds like she is a good IM Vet to have in Mannie's court. I'll have to look up Cushings disease in kitties, did not know they can get it, but the do get all the same medical issues as us. That explains some of Mannie symptoms as you've had this gut feeling for a while now something else is going on with him. Glad to hear he is doing all the Mannie things and wow with Elsa being allowed to play with his nanners. priceless moment. :-D
Mannie, many thanks for my special coffee. I threw out my old blend. love ya, Auntie Ann

Hey, the dunes sound great Mannie. hear it should be nice in the afternoon. If it's still rainy at the dunes, we will have sun this afternoon. See ya at the curb, Mags

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404 - IM Labs

At least Mannie stayed out of AlphaLand last night...

I'm sorry you've got further testing to go through, but it does sound like you've got a great vetty on your team, and a solid plan in place. Many prayers and vines for a simple and easy answer!!!

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404 - IM Labs

I like hearing Normalcy in Mannieland.
Also good to hear they are narrowing down what is ailing Mannie.. I hope there will be some treatment that will help him be even better
than normal.
It's not always easy to figure all of it out based on symptoms since no one seems to fit every one of them. medical puzzles, huh?

Paws crossed for it to have good treament options...
Hugs and Scritches!

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404 - IM Labs

((Michelle)) That's a lot to take in. I'm keeping you guys in my thoughts, and I hope it's easily treatable.

Mannie - you so totally rock.

Yes, he does! And so you YOU, Michelle!!

xo,
Josie

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404, +4 303 - IM Labs

Sending positive vines ! Remember, Mannie doesn't know or care about a new dx! Mannie is Mannie and will go about life as he will. Praying for the best results from the tests whichever way that may be. The Big Guy is happy in his kingdom, that's the important thing.

Mannie! YES!!! WE gots sun on the dunes already and the sliding should be perfect! Wind too so it can blow the last of the vetty smell out of Rusty's fur! Parasailing too! I'll get all the gear together! -- Tess

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404, +4 303 - IM Labs

Morning Michelle. I'm glad you finally got to talk to the IM vet. She does sound like a good one to have in yours and Mannie's corner. I like that she seems to want to get to the bottom of all this (almost) as much as you do. Further testing sounds like a good next step, and I sure hope all this gets figured out, one way or another, so treatment can be adjusted if necessary. I like Ann's reminder and sentiment - Mannie doesn't care about another dx, and as long as he's happy in his kingdom, that's what's most important.

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404, +4 303 - IM Labs

I hope the additional tests will help you determine the best way to treat Mannie and get him feeling better. It sounds like you have a good IM vet who will work with you. It's good to hear Mannie enjoyed being outside yesterday. That's great he shared his nanners with Elsa. Enjoy your day with DGS.

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404, +4 303 - IM Labs

Great job on the yard patrol, Mannie! Nannerville needs its mayor. :-D :-D Paws crossed for the next test results. ((((Michelle))))

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404, +4 303 - IM Labs

Hey Mannie - You aren't allowed to eat ice cream! It's not low carb! And my bean says you can't have it! I will let you sniff my ice cream cone - OK. Just no lickies!

My bean took us to the dentist yesterday and she looked at our teefies and told my bean that we need to get dentals --- AGAIN! I told my bean NO, but she didn't listen and made an appointment in April for Buster and me to go together! It's not fair. :-x :-x

And the dentist gave my bean some stuff to put on our gums and said if she does this once a day, we may never need a dental again. Why couldn't she give us this stuff sooner! I don't like getting a dental done.

Let's play in the sand so I can forget about what is going to happen! My bean also said, I may have to get a job to pay for it. Well, dumb bean, if she just doesn't do it, then I don't have to get a job and she won't have to pay for anything!

signed Maui the magnificent

Hi Mannie - thanks for the extra special cheery tea today! I so love Cheery Day! And what's this I hear that you plan to eat ice cream?! :o Are you kidding me.....you better be. Did you forget your promist to me already.....

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404, +4 303 - IM Labs

(((((Michelle))))) What a day for you! To see Mannie exploring his domain and the sunshine and feeling good in spite of his bounce, and then talking to the IM vet. What an up and down day. I was just reading the veterinary endocrinology page and it sounds like there are still many possibilities. I am glad you are getting the tests done. But as Mannie showed you yesterday, there is no difference in Mannie today or yesterday. Hug him lots (if he lets you), he is still the great Nanner King. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

FYI - Acromegaly is mostly something male cats get, and Cushings is mostly something female cats get. But we know cats like to be contrary. There are also some good links on the post on high dose conditions and what we know. Note that high dose is not always a symptom, at least for acromegaly.

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404, +4 303, +8 324 - IM Labs

324 @ +8. well, not too bad for a +8. we do not have a horrid spike, and Mannie actually looked darn good when we got home. we tested, he got a chicken snack. I love it when I see a normal gait. GO MANNIE!! :-D :-D :-D

Nicholas and I have just returned from a morning in the pool. The FISH had the best time. We've been water sliding, dunking and diving, floating and making good use of water buckets and kick boards. My goodness he so loves the pool. I will post some photos in Mannie's condo tomorrow.

Thank you everyone for your kind posts - they all mean alot to Mannie and I. This one particularly hit home, as it is how it truly is for Mannie. He is happy, content, does his thing. He does not know what illness means. Carry on big guy! :-D :-D :-D

Hi Ella - Oh yes, it is all I know: optimistic. He is doing well, over all. I too loved it when he let Elsa play with the nanners - that was just the coolest thing. Yupp, test we shall, and the see what is what. In the meantime, Mannie is being Mannie, and life is good.
Auntie Ella! YAY!!! I like the African bean too, they are kinda different, special. Woo HOO - I can bring you more if you like... ~~ Mannie, kitten Barista

Hi Angela - Many thanks. It is how we see. Looking for the best outcome, and no matter what - he's just being Mannie.

Hi Ann, and Miss Maggie - Me on finally connecting with the IM vet. She is so busy.... I think she is great - said she spent time at home the other night just researching adrenal issues etc, to make sure she was on track. Very conscientious, seems to really know her stuff, and can people talk so I can understand what she is talking about! And es - I've strongly suspected something was going on, and it seems that his bout with p'titis just brought everything to the surface. so... now we test and treat. a big yes on the elsa/nanners being a priceless moment - it really was.
Auntie Ann - I am SO PROUD of you - getting rid of that yucky coffee. I will put you first on y delivery list so you don't ever have to drink that stuff (BLECCH) again!~~ Mannie, kitten barista

Hi Amy - oh yes... I was SO GLAD not to have to post alpha. These bounces are ones for eh books! Trampoline city. BOING! Yes on the testing - aiyee!!, but I think she is good She seems genuinely interested in Mannie, as Mannie, and not just another patient. I like that. Many thanks - I too hope that the answer will be an easy one.

Hi Rhiannon - ME TOO on the normalcy. Despite all that is going on it truly is normalcy for him. He's being Mannie, and that is enough for me. I hope so too n the treatment. It is my understanding that there is, we just need to narrow this down so we can get the right one. oh yes... tehr are a few things that fit his symptoms. The more we dig, the more we refined it gets. All good.

Hi Josie - many thank yous! it is alot.. so many issues, but the more we dig the more apparent it seems that the root is the cause of it all, and if we can treat that alot of this stuff will resolve itself. Hey thanks you for teh rest. This is not easy, and I just try to keep him happy, able to just be him.

Hi Ann - MANY MANY THANKS! You have said it all. he does not know illness, all he knows is that his bed is warm, he has fuds, a nice yard to roam in, and beans who gives him scritches hugs and pets. In his book all is well. And thanks - we too hope for the best results. You are right:
The Big Guy is happy in his kingdom, that's the important thing.

Hi Anne - Me too, and yes, I think she is a good one to have in our corner. very through, as near as layman like me can tell. I thinks he does too, to get to the bottom. Time on her own reaffirming hat she knows on these illnesses. I so agree with you, and Ann - he's very ahppy in his kingdom, and in all reality that is all that matters.

Hi Carla - I think so too - on the treatment and the IM Vet. She seems good. Yupp - great day for him yesterday: ouside adn the nanners. I somlvoedit that he shared with Elsa. There is, and sometimes still is, a time when he would defend them at all costs.

Hi Liz - SO I told him on the yard patrol. It was so funny to watch that nose sniff as fast as it was.  and yes - Nannerville does need its mayor - that is funny, but true.  THX too on the next test results.

HI Wendy - thanks for the info. I agree on the tests. We can rule out a few things then, and get the right course of action. I hope! Thank you too for the link! and yes, I so agree: there is no difference in him today, yesterday or tomorrow. He still does his thing, seems content too. and yes, so I have read on the "Acromegaly is mostly something male cats get, and Cushings is mostly something female cats get". A big yes on the contrary thing too!

Hillary - oh   on the acro vs the cushings.
Auntie Hillary! I know.... but.... but..... but.... I LOVE ICE CREAM! ok.... I won't eat any... I SWEAR! ;-) ;-) ;-) I am so glad you iked your tea - I out extra cheery in it! ~~ Mannie, kitteh barista

Maui - ohhhhhhhhhhh....... no ie cream???? OK. we gots to work n a low car one! yes! That's it! low carb ice cream. we can do it. I KNOW so. :-D :-D :-D oh nooooooooo on your toothies! You gots special gum stuff??? Seriously??? I so want that stuff cuz I don't ever want another dental again! Bring me a sample, ok? heeheehee - way to go on telling your bean no on the job thing - I agree - just don't do it, then no cost. Right??? See ya soon!~~ Mannie

Tess - YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUN ON THE DUNES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so there! ok on the winds - Rusty will be so so so happy. oh so very cool on the parasailing - I so wanna do that. See you in a nano-second. ~~ Mannie

Maggie - I think so too! I LUBS THE DUNES!!! I so hope on it being nice in the afternoon. No matter hat we will find sunny skies, sand and fun! Picks you up at the curb. ~~ Mannie

Rusty - perfect!! That will take care of any vetty smell, for sure! I'll bring some more spa stuff for you too, just in case. ~~ Mannie

wendy - what are you implying - that mannie is a girlie and not a boyee? :o

It's OK. My Shadoe was a girlie girl and had acromegaly; I liked to think of it as her being extra special.

So if Mannie does have Cushings, that would make him a very special boy.
Linda's Bearman had Cushings and he was a very handsome fellow!

Re: 2/20 Mannie AMPS 303, +2 404, +4 303, +8 324 - IM Labs

I'm sorry to hear that Mannie may be having some endocrinology issues, but it sounds like your vet is very much on top of things in checking them out.

Bear Man, who was not a girl ;-) had Iatrogenic Cushing's disease, which was caused by long term steroid use. We did not pursue testing or treatment for it (the treatment for him would have been to stop taking steroids), so I am not an expert on those things. He had the Cushingoid appearance you describe: pot belly, muscle wasting, and poor hair coat. He did have very thin fragile skin, but fortunately did not have skin tears. That, to me, is one of the scarier aspects of dealing with Cushing's. When I have seen Cushing's kitties on the Board, they almost always have presented with the skin tears. I'm glad that Mannie does not have those, and that your vet is doing the testing.

The only hyperaldosteronism kitty I have seen on the Board was Michelle's Doodle. You could probably find a ton of good info by going back and searching her posts. I remember that she struggled to get Doodle's potassium levels up, and I believe that she may have used the potassium sparing diuretic Spironolactone (that drug was on my Pharmacology mid-term yesterday, so I had to mention it  ). Here is Michelle's post about Doodle's diagnosis:
http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?p=181975

I am hoping that the vet's testing comes up negative. Tell Mannie that he is already Bear Man's twin brother, and he doesn't have to do the Cushing's thing

Re: 2/20 Mannie PMPS 399 - IM Labs

Mannie, let's you and I bust out of the pinks together tonight. That'll make the beans feel better. ~Neko (girl cat)

Michelle - I'm glad you fessed up about using the pool slides with Nicholas. He's such a great excuse to have fun in the water.

Re: 2/20 Mannie PMPS 399 - IM Labs

Hey, Michelle -

Sorry you have so much to try to figure out, but I know you'll do whatever you need to for Mannie. You're SUCH a good mom! And, a great Grammie! I'm sure Nicholas loves your outings and I so enjoy seeing your pictures. Keep meaning to ask what kind of camera you have, glad someone else asked.

Hugs to you and Mannie...and, Elsa, too!

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Re: 2/20 Mannie PMPS 399 - IM Labs

399 At PMPS. WOO HOO! We have avoided the red floor... anti-jinx!

Hi Gayle, and thanks for all your help today. This is so true on Shadoe - I so remember her! and Bear Man too! Mannie and Bear Man look so much alike - kindred spirits! and ya know - they are extra special.

Hi Linda - thank you so much for visiting Mannie today, and for the info. And I hope so on my IM vet - she seems to be. somehow I missed it all along that Bear Man was a cushings cat. Thanks too for Michelle and Doodles post. That is helpful too. I will look into more of her posts. It will be interesting to see how all this turns out, which DX we come up with. Yupp, Mannie does fit the description, so we shall see how all this pans out. I am so grateful that he does not have skin tears - if this is cushings - that to me is the nightmare of cushings. darn scary. Me too on the negative results, but well... we shall see I guess. Paws crossed. I know... he was already Bear man's twin - wouldn't that be something if they have this in commons too. ;-)

HI Wendy - oh HAHAHAHA on the water slides. dang one gets really wet up there! and yes he is - we do have such a great time!

Neko - you got it! My bean keeps saying lower lower lower... ok, guess we should do that huh. ~~ Mannie(boy cat)

Hi Libby - THX on all - we do try. I liek this camera - easy to use, a basic waterproof point and shoot. It does a good job, doesn't leak... Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 Thanks so much on the pics - we both have such fun together.

Re: 2/20 Mannie PMPS 399, +2.2 338 - IM Labs

I can understand , considering this, why you would not want Mannie coming down too low.

Sending him many good tests vines. At least once you know for sure, you can start treatment.

305 @ +4

Hi Marje - thx. there are so many issues on his plate right now that FD has to take a seat with it all. Once we can get this under control - the adrenal etc cushings etc BP etc all of it - then I hope the FD will fall in line too. We play it by ear as each day goes by. Bottom line: he's happy, content, being Mannie. THX for the vines. I so hope for a definitive answer. Then we can treat.

I have to echo Marje here... I think it is better to know for sure and be able to treat accordingly. I am keeping my paws crossed for good news, though, and I am happy as always to hear that Mannie, true to his sweet self, remains blissfully content and oblivious of all that ails him. What a special guy he is, and what a special Mamabean you are. Sending wishes, hopes, and vines galore.

So sorry that you are dealing with so much on your plate Michelle. I understand that feeling of uncertainty.
Cats are very blessed animals. They have very long adulthood & relatively short fragile old age. They mask they sickness well & always enjoy the simple things in life. They are here to teach us the lesson of life.
Please dont worry too much with Mannie still doing good. Yes, we need to know what we are dealing with but things are often beyond human control. As long as our kitty is happy, we are happy. :YMHUG:

morning Courtney - many thanks! We hope for good news too. in the mean time, he's doing well. many thanks for the rest.

Morning Helen - this is all so true. he does so that - enjoy the simple things. that is very much Mannie. :-D we try not to worry, not too much I can do to control it anyways - just keep him happy.
