Well, Ivy has decided to have a very active cycle today. Been feeding snacks of varying carbs (low and MC). I "may" have given a slight heavy dose this am:rolleyes:
Or, maybe the depot is just re-balancing from her skip to go to the vet on Tuesday:woot:

Anyway, I like seeing less yellows for her!

Still waiting for the T4 results, no call last night from the vet. Maybe this evening.

Hope you area all staying warm. It's pretty cold here! Brrrr.

She seems to have an upset tummy, so that’s worrying me. Soft poops today, not her regular.
Appetite is off a bit. Hoping dinner is not a problem.

Hmm. That’s odd. I hope it’s residual from the vet visit somehow. It is worrisome when they’re not thrilled about eating.

Glad you’re seeing less of that yellow and she’s settling back in. I’m glad you didn’t have to do the vet today, I just saw little snow tornados on my walk to the laundromat so I hope you guys are staying warmer!

It is odd. I can’t figure out why she’s got diarrhea/Very loose poops.
I did end up giving her 2 mg dose of Zofran about a half hour before dinner just in case she was nauseous or something.
She ate half of her dinner and I gave a half a dose of insulin just in case she didn’t want to eat or want her snacks tonight or would throw up or having more diarrhea. I’m just a little afraid of too much insulin and not enough of the good stuff she needs.
She did eat the balance of her dinner about 40 minutes later.
Hoping by tomorrow things turn around. And like you said, I wonder if it’s related to the vet visit on Tuesday. I’ve never seen her have a reaction like this before so it’s odd.
If the doctor calls with her test results tonight, I will discuss it with him and see what he thinks :blackeye:

I’m wondering if there’s something I can do to help with the loose stools. :(

Wow, really nice AM cycle! Yay Ivy! I'm sorry she's not feeling very well. I wonder what the vet will say. I can certainly relate to the "there's always something" sentiment.

She doesn’t usually react to the gaba with any diarrhea, so it’s odd to me.
Interesting you’ve seen that reaction with Petey though. :bighug::bighug:

I just gave her a dose of Animal Essentials Colon Rescue (forgot I had it). Hope that helps. :bighug::cat::bighug:
 
Update: Ivy didn’t eat any of her snacks tonight. I’m worried.
She’s had a few more episodes of loose stools.
I syringe fed her some of her 6% snack at +3 just to make sure some carbs are on board.
(She had no Interest in eating).

Anyone think I should force feed her more food?

How worried should I be about this lack of appetite and mushy poops???

I plan to give her some Zofran before breakfast and will give another dose of Colon Rescue if still having loose stools.
I’m not really experienced with low appetite or loose stools.

Don't know if this is a result of the gabapentin and trazodone from vet appointment on Tuesday or something else. :(

Do you think the ondansetron helped her? If so it can be given every 8 hours. I’d see if things improve before rushing to the vet. Is today the only one where’s she’s had loose stool?

Yes. So far only today.
I gave the ondansetron about a half hour before I fed her and she ate happily about half of her dinner, then she stopped.
I fed her the rest about a 3/4 hour later.
But she’s had no interest in any of her +1,2 3 snacks tonight and I’ve had two syringe feed her some of it just to make sure she had something in her system as the insulin was kicking in.

I only gave a half a dose just in case there might be any vomiting or too much loss of hydration through the stools (not really been an issue yet).

I do have Cerenia and more Ondansetron here.
I only have 2 mg dose (but I’m wondering if I really should’ve given 4 mg because she’s easily 15 pounds) and I think that’s probably a more appropriate dose, what do you think?

is it best to give it at eight hours or should I wait until tomorrow morning before breakfast?
 
Staci, sorry Ivy not feeling so good with her tummy. I don't have much experience with this except that I give Forti Flora for loose stool.
Sending lots of hugs and prayers she feels better. I know how stressful and worrisome this is. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Did she have multiple rounds of loose stool? Do you have S. Boulardii? Do you think she ate something that could have upset her stomach? Any new foods? Some cats get an upset stomach from some of the ingredients in higher carb foods like gluten.

I used to give Bandit 2mg on Ondansetron and she was around 10 lbs, so you might need a higher dose. Did she eat any more since?

I do have Jarrows here. Never used it. Don’t know the dose.
I’m thinking Ivy probably could use 4 mg of ondansetron because she’s 15 pounds, does that sound right?

I was thinking of giving her a 4 mg dose and about an Hour, that would be around eight hours from the last dose.
Is it advisable to also give the Jarrows along with ondensetron?

No new foods.
She doesn’t get any gluten because I make her food and she only eats that. She doesn’t eat any table Scraps and doesn’t get into any foods.
She doesn’t eat any treats or snacks, only the home cooked food I make her.

The only thing was on Tuesday, two days ago. I took her to the vet and she was sedated with gabapentin and trazodone because they had to draw blood. That was not unusual. That’s our normal routine, but this is a very strange circumstance for her she doesn’t usually react in this manner.

unless she picked something up well at the vet, A bug or a virus??

Yes, I think you can try 4mg and give it 8 hours apart and see if it helps. I don't think there is an issue with giving it with S. Boulardii.

Hopefully it is a temporary tummy upset that passes and she is fine tomorrow. Paws crossed!
 
It sounds like 2 mg worked though. It doesn’t last long. Max was fine getting it every 12 hours but when Chai had the problem she needed it every 7/8 hours even though she didn’t eat over night. Ivy might need 3-4 mg. Mine hated syringe feeding too. Try to syringe food she’s not crazy about if possible as they can develop food aversions. Baby food is easy to syringe .

Treatment for kittens is half of the adult dose. It can be given with food; it does not have to be. This is usually sufficient for loose stools of normal frequency. For the “emergency stop diarrhea” approach, we find more frequent dosing of smaller amounts of the probiotic, providing a higher total CFU the first day or two, resolves diarrhea much more quickly.

I sure hope it goes away quickly.
She only eats the homemade food I make her so not sure what else to give her

Acted. I dam d the severe method because everything Chai ate came out the other end. I syringed it with baby food and not all at once because I was giving small amounts of food every few hours. Follow the directions.
 
I tried to mix 1/2 capsule in baby food, then in FF beef feast pate and she turned her nose up to both (perhaps she could smell the s boulardi mixed in it?)

I put 1/2 capsule dose in a smaller capsule and pilled her with it.
Hope that’s ok.

If I see improvement, how do you know when to stop giving dosing of all of these meds? or do you give them for a few days and then wean off of them?

Great! S. Boulardii is a probiotic, so even if you keep her on it, there is no issue. You can also stop it cold turkey if you want.

Ondansetron can also be stopped cold-turkey, but you might want to go down to twice a day (from every 8 hours) and then stop it if you find that she is eating and doesn't need it.

She already takes a probiotic so on a regular basis she shouldn’t need this one (she takes Adored Beast Healthy Gut Digestive Enzymes pre/probiotics)

Just need to get her feeling good again.

Jarrow contains MOS which some cats don't like because of the bitter taste. Putting the powder into a smaller capsule and then pilling it is fine.

I do not use Fortiflora and recommend against it as it is made by Purina & I don’t like their ingredients.

Both my cats always get S. boulardi (a smidgen scoop twice a day as maintenance) with their other supplements mixed with water to make a slurry which syringe. Tobey recently had a bout of soft stools and I gave him 1/4 cap every two hours of the Jarrow’s with MOS. I just mix it with a bit of water & syringe it and he does just fine with it. I fed him a bland diet of just poached chicken breast. I also increased his Visbiome Vet to two capsules a day instead of one. It took about two days to resolve. His diarrhea was a side effect from starting atenolol at a bit too high of a dose for him (although it was really low).

I wouldn’t let it go more than a couple days max before seeing the vet as long as you can get food and water in her. If that becomes difficult, I’d talk to them about best ways to keep her hydrated. But food is essential to prevent fatty liver disease. You’ll have to use your best judgement for when to take her in considering how difficult it is.
