Some great news, I just heard back from Ailish’s vet, and she is officially a diet-controlled diabetic!

She’s been OTJ for about a month now. Her vet had us using an approach of 1.5U when over 150, .5U-1U when between 100 and 150, and to absolutely not bellow 100. In practice, we only shot below 120 once and got freaked out by how fast she dropped, so we never did it again.

As some folks have commented, we kinda stumbled into an OTJ trial a month ago, and at this point, she’s in the greens, even during the food bump.

The doc wants me to test every other day for a bit, and then see about even less. I’m not gonna lie, it’s gonna take me a bit of time to get comfortable with that little data. I guess letting go of control is my gift from her for reaching this point.

I’ve got some thought about this whole process that I’ll type up and share later, but I wanted to share this while the news was still hot!

Thank you all for helping us to this point. I’d have lost my mind without you guys!

I’ll still be around, I gotta keep up with how y’all and the furry ones are doing after all.

Wishing everyone safe surfing with peaceful sleep somewhere warm :) OTJ OTJ OTJ

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change rhis/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!

Oh Eamon, this is the most wonderful news!! I’m so happy for all of you. (Your Mom is looking down on you and she is so happy knowing you’ve given her sweet girl the best care) ❤️❤️❤️

you’ve done such great work with Ailish!! Congratulations and we wish her a very happy and healthy life.
Please stay connected and keep us posted on how she is doing. I love seeing her royal pics!!
Lots of hugs to you, your baby and Ailish :bighug::cat::bighug::cat:

Congrats! It’s been great following you two since we got here about the same time. I bet that will feel weird about the data… but you and her have earned this with all your hard work. Keep us updated and pics coming! :otj:

Thanks, I’m already thinking about all of this, especially the dental stuff, she’s due for a checkup!
