Yesterday's Condo

Yay for starting the day in yellow! :RAHCAT Yay for visiting the blue floor, even if it was just a drive by, :RAHCAT and yay for poo!!! :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

I knew as soon as I came downstairs this morning that the poo fairy had been to visit Cinco recently. He doesn't bury his deposits, and they are very stinky lately, so anyone entering the house for the next several hours would have known! Be careful what you ask for, right? Oh well, that's what air freshener and open windows are for. :-D It seems that day four is the magic day for him, so I guess I'll stop stressing on days two and three. I will however, keep adding the miralax on those days. No sense in getting over confident! Cinco is otherwise doing about the same - some talking, some walking around (I still feel the Zobaline is helping his neuropathy  as he walks on the feet now instead of his haunches). Not drinking or peeing excessively, and still eating well, so I haven't given subqs in a while. I guess tomorrow we'll have to assess this dose and see if we need to increase again. I hope not. he's already higher than any dose he was on during the first go-round (I mean after I him got off the crazy doses the vet had him on at first). I know it's different when they come out of remission, but I'm still hoping this is the infection and AB talking and we'll see better numbers when that's over with.

Harvey is no longer doing the litter box 500, but I can't be sure if he's peeing successfully every time, as he is so darned sneaky. It's getting harder and harder to catch him to give him his AB. He does not trust me at all and will not let me within several feet of him. He's still suspicious of his food, too, even though I'm adding nothing but a little water. :? He's just too darned smart.

The vet wants me to start feeding him Hill's CD or KD canned food. I see both are pretty high in carbs, so they're out for Cinco. Are there any other foods that people are feeding cats with renal or kidney issues that would be safe for Cinco, too? I'd appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

WE GOT RAIN!!!! dancing_cat dancing_cat dancing_cat Not that the drought is over, by any means, but at least everything got a good soaking. A light, steady rain fell all day today. Very thankful.

Sending vines to all in need and hugs to all the beans. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, everyone!

Re: 2/2 Cinco AMPS289 +4 190 +6 217

Thanks for visiting this stressed bean today :-D There sure are a lot of rah cats up on your condo, and for good reason. So I'll add some too, yay for poo, and fuds eating, and yellow, and blue, and zobaline working! :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :-D :-D :-D

I hear you on the dose, we're going super high. Everyone keeps telling me not to worry about the amount and just concentrate on what she needs to go down, so I'm trying not to ;-) I hope that once the infection, etc is taken care of it will help him slide down. I'm sorry that Harvey is avoiding you, it'd be nice if we could explain it's to help them!

For fuds, we're limited by Chynas allergies and use a phosphorus binder. So I feed Ziwipeak Lamb right now. I've also fed several of the Natures Variety (Lamb, Duck, and Rabbit). I'm also trying Natures Variety Raw Lamb here and there. EVO has a few low ones in phos/carbs if you can get him to eat them. Weruva has a few good ones (paw licking chicken and steak frites but they spike Chyna with their starch I think). I see a lot of people feed Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets but we can't get that in Canada (just regular Friskies, no special diet ones). Wellness Chicken, and Turkey are decent for both and a few of their CORE line are good. Are you using a binder or is phos a problem yet? I didn't need one at first but now we do, especially since her allergies limit us. Anything under 200 mg phos/100 kcal and under 1% DM is best, so I aim for that but the fuds I use are a little higher phos than that, I try for under 250 on Dr. Lisas list...the lower the better of course ;-) I know Ann(Tess) has a link on her spreadsheet with fuds she feeds (Merrick Cowboy Cookout is out now though, their formulas changed). Sorry to babble on, lol. Have a good night, Tricia!

Re: 2/2 Cinco AMPS289 +4 190 +6 217

Yay for some blue today and the poo. I'm glad the zobaline is helping Cinco walk better.

You should put food ? in the subject line. I know there are people on the board who can answer your question, but they may not see it.

I hope you can get the AB in Harvey. It's hard when they start running from you.

Thanks, Carla. I added Food? to the subject.

Thanks for all the good info, Rachel. I wasn't sure where to start, and you've given me a good base. I found a feed store in a nearby town that has a lot of food lines that Petsmart and Petco don't carry, so I have more options than I did before. Looks like I'll be shopping and experimenting this week!

The phos levels are what was recommended to me by peeps on here. I forgot to mention BFF (best feline friends) have some good ones too, they all have fish though...although my lists I've done at home are all grain free so there are of course more. I've put in hours of looking at fuds  I had to order online and go to the specialty pet food stores too. I hope you can find some the Cinco looooooves! ;-)

Thanks, Rachel. I was thinking that I needed to watch the phos levels. I don't know anything about binders, so I guess we don't need to use one of those at this point. confused_cat I don't have to feed Cinco the same thing Harvey eats (and there are the girls to consider, too), but it's just easier on me if everyone is eating the same thing. That's why it never worked to try to feed Minka the Hill's food for hyperthyroid - I couldn't give it to everyone else (and no one liked it, anyway) .

Sorry if this is posted somewhere, I can't see in his profile...is Cinco CKD? That's when the binder is used if phosphorus is too high, and we worry about phos levels....otherwise I believe lower phos is good to do for preventative measures in older kitties (I think kittens need higher phos). Do you have bloodwork values? Marje is awesome at helping with those, if the diagnosis is CKD. I can understand that feeding all the kitties the same thing would be much easier

Rachel:

No, as far as I know, Cinco is not CKD (knock on wood). I'm hoping Harvey isn't, either, but we're treating him like he has kidney issues until this infection clears up and we can see if his values come back to normal. The vet said the UTI could be affecting them, so she wasn't ready to diagnose kidney disease yet.

If the vet is concerned about Harvey, it may not be a UTI. He could have a kidney infection. A UTI is an infection in the lower end of the urinary track. A kidney infection is different and takes much longer to treat. A UTI will respond to a 2 week course of ABs. A kidney infection can take months on an AB.

Marje, among others here, has had a good deal of experience in dealing with CKD. If you haven't already done so, Tanya's site is an incredible resource.

Hi Rachel!
Yay for poo!
I hope Cinco slides down to blue!

Both Lucy and Ginger have CKD.
Lucy eats Wellness Turkey except when she doesn't want that.
There isn't really a wide selection of low carb/phos commercial foods, but there are some.
Good luck finding food that everyone can enjoy!
