Looks like Chips Levemir curve may be on the downswing so I skipped the bolus of N this cycle.

I believe I will limit the NPH to cycles pink and rising, or pink/above and flat.

Chip's 2/1

So how does this bolus thingy work? Aren't you waiting to see the impact of the clavamox first?

Re: 2/2 Chip AMPS 319 +6 321 +9 233 no bolus

The bolus is kind of a temporary quick fix of shorter acting insulin to nudge down high flat numbers while you get the depot insulin up to speed.

Really more of a Levemir trick. For Chip the NPH bolus was apparently able to bump half of a nasty 48 hour pink/red bounce down to yellow. Not too shabby for a few extra syringes and test strips. I already had the Humulin N on hand.

The clavamox was more like a shotgun in the dark, since a culture and sensitivity wasn't in the budget. No outward signs of infection, just the unusual high numbers.

With the duration of it, it takes skill to know when to give N. you don't want the nadir from N overlapping with the nadir from R. It is a good use to give it as the bounce starts if you see a very rapid rise. It can keep it from getting out of control.

Very nice Chip!

I wouldn't have had the nerve to bolus NPH without supervision from Libby.

I'd been watching Jill bolus R with Levemir for Alex so I knew what to expect. Libby mapped the possible NPH shot times for Chip.

I'm pleased with the results and will continue to bolus when the situation warrants.
