Wow - I didn't realize how addicted I was to FDMB until I couldn't get in. I missed you all and I hope everyone is okay. Especially all of you in cold/blizzard conditions.

Yesterday after talking to our vet, we started Blackie on Prednisone - 2.5mg bid to start. Other than higher glucose readings, I don't know what to expect. Our vet is hoping that the pred will help with the pancreatitis and possible GI issues. Blackie was on pred several years ago for his arthritis and I didn't notice any ill effects. But I wasn't home testing at the time, so I don't really know what it did to his glucose. But at that time, his fructosamine tests said he was regulated (on PZI).

Blackie seems to feel okay, no change really. He doesn't always want to eat at shot time, but will eat after his fluids. Sometimes, I have to add different foods or chickie dust to get him to eat, but at least he is eating. His high numbers this morning were probably a bounce from the low blues he had yesterday, but with the pred I don't really know.

Re: 2/2 Blackie amps 408 +4 417 +6 318 Pred??

I don't have much experience with Pred - Maverick was only on it a month to help with his asthma. No one told me then of any risks and of course I trusted our vet completely *sarcasm now*.

I'll be following along to see the replies you get.

Tuna juice helped Maverick eat up his food today. The novelty of chicken dust is wearing off. I doubt the sodium in the tuna juice would be helpful though.

Sending hugs for you and Blackie.

Re: 2/2 Blackie amps 408 +4 417 +6 318 Pred??

I'm hoping some folks with more experience with pred will stop by. I think more people opt for prednisolone vs. prednisone. If Linda/Bear or Carolyn/Latte don't comment, I'd drop them a PM and ask them to respond. The bottom line is that you can work the insulin around the steroid. There are a number of people here who's cats had IBD, asthma, or other conditions that warranted the use of pred. We can always adjust the insulin dose.

Re: 2/2 Blackie amps 408 +4 417 +6 318 Pred??

Hi Ele, I don't have any experience with pred, but I am dropping by anyway just to say hi and to hope that Blackie will be more interested in eating soon.
Yes, the board is so much a part of our lives that to be without it for a day is like withdrawal!!

Have a good evening and stay warm,

Re: 2/2 Blackie amps 408 +4 417 +6 318 Pred??

No experience with pred/FD other than that's what got Gracie here! So glad to see you back....missed everyone. How are you all doing in CO with the storm?

Blackie would not eat his preshot dinner, so I'm waiting to give his pred until he eats. I'm warming his fluids now and hopefully he'll eat after that.

Blackie - eat your fuds! They are good for you, and I bet they taste good too... Good luck with that Ele - it sounds like overall he's doing ok/better in the food area.

I too have no experience with pred - sorry. I hope others who have will be along soon.

I agree with Sienne....PM Carolyn/Latte or Lind/Bear Man...I am sure they would be happy to give you some feedback.
So, if you don't hear from anyone, drop them a PM, k?
Hope you will feel even better now Blackie...we are sending loads of healing vines to to...and a blizzard of snowflakes.
(((Blackie & Ele))) Hugs to you both! :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Sorry I am just getting to this now.

Bear Man did take steroids (sometimes Pred and sometimes injectable Dex). If you can get it, Prednisolone may work better than Prednisone. Your dose of 2.5 mg is pretty low. You are giving it once daily? I found that it did work very well for his IBD/CP issues. When given in high doses or long term, it will start to affect the body (that is actually how Bear became a diabetic). It is also to be used with caution in renal kitties (which Bear also was). It is (in my opinion) a very effective way of helping with GI pain. I didn't notice any short term side effects like being spaced out (as you mentioned in your PM) or sedated at all. It may cause thirst. You want to be alert to any signs of UTI, as steroids do make the body more susceptible to infection.

You may see an impact on BG's. With Bear it was not dramatic, and the effect was also obscured by other meds that he took, and by the dry food that he ate. I gave the pred in the morning with his am shot. You can do some tests to see if and when you are getting a noticeable rise in BG's. I believe that Carolyn/Latte had it down to a science where she could time shots and steroids in such a way that the nadir of each to work together. If Pred makes him feel better, it is more important to keep him on it, and work the insulin dose to compensate.

While the steroid will work to ease inflammation in the GI tract, other meds may still be needed to work along with them. Bear couldn't take an appetite stim (Mirtazipine or Cypro) due to side effects of agitation, but these drugs can be helpful. Something for nausea (we used Ondansetron) or pain (Bupe) can be needed while waiting for the inflammation to subside. Don't be in a hurry to stop the steroids, and if you do, make sure to taper off very slowly.

I hope that you will start to see him feel better soon (it may take a few days to kick in).
