So, today we saw our first greens (yay!). Unfortunately, it was while I was away from home and it was dh's first day doing testing & shots, so it made me quite nervous.

Is it normal for numbers to fall this much and this quickly? At what point should I worry? I had dh feed a bit of HC food after Phobos was at 78 in case he was going to keep dropping. I'm assuming some of this is him coming off a bounce and it will regulate somewhat in the next couple of days? Also thinking I should try to monitor him tonight to see if he drops as quickly...hopefully I can stay up.

Thank you!

That's a huge fall!! I'd almost have to wonder if DH gave too much insulin today!

Usually we wait until they drop below 50 before pulling out the HC food

That fast drop looks like he's starting to bounce again due to the fast drop of so many points as well as dropping into greens (where he hasn't been in a very long time)

@Chris & China - I know - I would have thought too much insulin, too, but I did the draw with dh this morning and double-checked before he shot. Yeah - I knew I was jumping the gun a bit with the HC food, but the way he was falling, and me not being there (dh works from home, but he's not able to actively monitor Phobos & kept having work things come up when he should have been testing Phobos)...
So, you think today's numbers are a bounce? Do they bounce low as well as high?

No....the numbers today aren't a "low bounce".(we'll call that a "cliff dive") ...going from 96 at +7.5 to 434 at +10 IS a bounce!

He fell so fast (and so low) today that he's already starting his bounce. The reasons for the bounce are 1. dropping fast and 2. dropping to a lower number that his body isn't used to being at.

Well, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that there was too much insulin involved in those numbers. I would take this as a sign that you're breaking through that wall of red numbers.

When you have some time, take a look at other kitties' spreadsheets. You'll see lots of cats whose numbers dive in pretty impressive ways. It's not necessarily a regular phenomenon. Gabby was often used as an example of why getting spot checks is important. Early on, she had a cycle where her numbers started in the 400s, she dropped into the 40s, and by PMPS was back in the 400s.

I understand your anxiety about the numbers dropping. I would probably have suggested holding off on giving the HC and instead, giving Phobos a teaspoon or two of LC to see if that would slow things down. The bounce back up was pretty predictable so adding some HC into the mix may have only accentuated the bounce. It's a good lesson and something to think about for the next time Phobos has a cycle like this.

@Chris & China - yes, 'cliff dive' seems apt. Thanks for the clarification. I'm guessing that the bounce yesterday was also due to the HC food he was given, so we'll see what today brings.

Thanks @Vyktors Mum :-) I'm hoping we continue to see greens finally.

@Sienne and Gabby - glad to hear his dive was not unheard of. DH was glad that I had been there for the a.m. shot so I didn't wonder what the heck he had done.
I did try giving LC food between the 115 reading and the 78, but it didn't help. So, normally, would I wait to give any HC food until he hits 50? What number would necessitate the corn syrup?

We usually wait until they drop below 50 before using HC food. There's no specific number for when you use corn syrup either, but generally, if the HC isn't bringing them up, we might tell you to add a few drops of syrup to a feeding to get the simple sugar into him quickly and then more food to help stabilize the BG

Looks like he's trying to work on clearing that bounce today. Hopefully he'll keep sliding down and not "wobble". Some times when they clear a bounce, they will just keep coming down until they're back where they "started" but sometimes they'll start to come down, and then go back up some before coming back down (they wobble)
