Yesterday: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6594, Kitty's dental, with findings of resorption of roots.

I shot his regular 1 unit. My question is, should I give him more bupe? He ate only a few licks of food, and his throat may still be sore from intubation.

Because I gave him his shot, I have to get him to eat. I have another can of A/D left -- nice and soft, but 13% carb.

Poor Kitty....did you make the food real soupy? Do you think he will eat that A/D?
I personally think anything he will eat would be good...how is he otherwise?

Thanks for chiming in. He is still jumpy -- purry, though I think it's his anxious purr, not his happy purr.

I just coaxed 1/8 can of his lc FF into him -- warmed it, soupy, and added magic chicken dust, so he took several licks.

But he didn't eat overnight.

He takes a few licks, and then stops. I do think his throat still bothers him.

Yesterday, we talked about a bupe trial to see whether his teeth had been hurting him on a regular basis. This would be just a plain old pain-relief use of bupe. I wouldn't want to give him a big dose, because it does wipe him out. That's not good either.

If it's just the intubation pain wearing off, then maybe just leave the bupe alone, and keep pushing small amounts of watery food? Yesterday, he rejected HC gravy. He has NEVER done that.

awww poor kitty! Is it common for a kitty to be intubated? during a dental? I know nothing about dentals, and if mocha ever get's her scheduled and she doesn't eat like she should I know I am going to panic big time.

Yes, I believe it's standard procedure. It's how they ensure safe breathing through the anesthesia.

Don't worry, Devon, this Board has the BEST support group ever. The angels on this board walked me through everything yesterday. You will be fine.

Based on my experience (remember, I know nothing), I'd say getting a dental with x-rays of the kitty's mouth is really important, to maintain good health and stop problems before they develop. But remember, I know nothing. ;-)

OMG I just read about your trials yesterday!!! I'm so sorry this happened, & sending healing vines to sweet Kitty--Seems he is doing better, after all!! Hope the soolution will be forth coming & all will be well--

What do you know, his little sore throat was able to accept the yummy 13% carb! But it is very smooth and soft. And he has to eat something, esp. now that's it's +1.5.

I'm sure it's his throat. I hear a gulp every time he swallows.

Devon, I think Mocha is younger than Kitty, and probably in better oral health to begin with. Remember, we scheduled this procedure as a follow-up to a possible cancer scare last fall, so things were already dicey. I am certain Mocha will do better.

Kitty is happy to eat little bits of the 13% carb A/D, so I guess that's what he gets today! Like ice cream for a sore throat. :smile:

jill, I really can't get more than a few licks into him, and only the A/D. Is it okay to feed the A/D a while longer? It's better than not eating, right?

I will test him again soon.

i'd feed him whatever he'll eat. he has to eat. :-D
as he starts feeling better, gradually add his regular food to the AD to the point where there's no AD left. in other words, wean him off the AD.

He took a lick of the FF, but hesitated. He is licking up another 1/2 tablespoon of the A/D.

I hope this throat starts to heal soon, but I'll hold off on the bupe.

I just want to say that, with the bupe he got yesterday during his procedure having worn off, he is back to his rather forlorn self. I feel my Kitty has been dealing with discomfort at best. He has had no zip for awhile.

Bupe is not the appropriate long-term pain option, I guess. Does anyone know what a long-term pain option would be?

FINALLY. I mashed it up really well, made it soupy, and he must have been pretty hungry. I'd say he ate about 1/4 can.

I just wanted to say, I'm glad to see he's eating and sorry to hear about the dental and the issues. I guess on the good news side - at least you know what is going on and it's another reason why xrays are so dang important!

Oh my goodness - just read through yesterday's posts - wow, wow wow, poor Kitty.

at least the dentist knew he was out of his element and didn't attempt to proceed. points for that - I see you got the records - did you also get a cd or copy of the xrays? If not, ask for them, as you will want them to show to a dental specialist.

Hi Kathy

I'm glad to hear he's eating. I would let the vet know about the gulping; it is probably related to the dental, but it's good for the vet to know about any adverse side effects.

The best option for treatment of pain is addressing the root cause (no pun intended, seriously). Long term chronic pain such as comes with advanced arthritis, cancer, or spinal disease is a whole 'nuther kettle of fish. You want your cat to be comfy until his mouth (the assumed source of pain) is addressed properly.

Try putting the FF in a blender or food processor with some water to get a smoother consistency. Also, EVO 95% in the chicken/turkey is very smooth and is low carb.
 
Oh Kathy I just read your post from yesterday. Could not log on but thought of you and Kitty yesterday. I am so sorry to hear the outcome but glad that the vet did not go ahead and do something he is not familiar with. I would get opinion from a specilized vet. I am glad Kitty is eating a bit and sending you hugs and Kitty healing vibes.

PS, I am freaking out reading this since Skippy is due for a cleaning in June that I may pass up....

Birten, I will post this in your condo too, but if there is one thing I learned from yesterday's experience, it is NOT TO PASS UP A DENTAL. I believe this has been brewing a long time for my sweet boy. The earlier you know, the more options you have. If you manage the post-op, with the help of a band of dedicated angels, you'll get Skippy through it fine. It's what you DON'T know that will hurt him.

Jess, Kitty started gulping last fall, which is what started a process of x-rays of an abscessed area from a tooth removed last April, then a biopsy which found nothing. Oddly, the gulping disappeared a while ago.

I will get a copy of the x-rays. The vet is going to consult with a boarded specialist, and I hope to get a second opinion quickly.

I feel angry with myself for not being more aggressive about Kitty's condition. I've been so wrapped up in treating the diabetes that I have missed his "care."

And I have to admit, I am discouraged about getting complete care for him. I talked with his primary vet about pain. She did an arthritis "screening," and said he had "mild' arthritis, and that I should give him Cosamine.

Maybe he's not too badly off. But it's hard not knowing.

Thanks, everyone. He ate tonight after his shot. Gulping is nearly gone.
