Good morning,

Yesterday's condo

2/16 AMPS=139 (1u); +1=184; +2=176; +5.5=149; +8.5=122
2/16 PMPS=122 (1u); +2=119; +3.5=106; +4.5=121; +7.5=128

2/17 AMPS=126 (1u); +1=117; +2=110; +3=112; +11=124
2/17 PMPS=113 (1u); +1=135; +2.5=133; +4=155

Lucy is doing OK this morning, especially considering she got really sick on Saturday.
She did fine without bupe all day yesterday, but I gave her another dose just before bed last night.
I wanted her to feel decent enough to eat this morning.
Morning poor appy is harder for me than evening poor appy as I don't have hours and hours to deal with it.

Her appy is so-so this morning. It's not too bad.
She so far finished the 1st breakfast, of course by finger-feeding.

:!: :!: I started mixing a bit of babyfood squash in her food since last night.
She isn't constipated, but the holistic vet thought adding some fibre would help improve her colon health.
She does't like punpkin, and adding something that has texture will turn her appetite off.
She doesn't seem to mind babyfood squash, but I wonder if it has decent amount of fiber left in it.
The ingredients are just pureed butternut squash and water, and it says 4 tbsp contains 4g carb., 1g fibre and 2g sugar.
Do you think this is appropriate for a diabetic cat???
Any other source of fibre I can try???
:?: :?:

Thank you for your suggestion and advice as always.
I hope everyone's having a nice day.

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126 // Babyfood Squash?

I've used baby food squash for J.D. before, 1 teaspoon added to his food. I never thought about it having sugar in it.

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126 // Babyfood Squash?

Anything with sugar in it isn't good for a diabetic cat, and you will want to find an alternative solution to that. Have you tried Forti Flora for her instead? You can get it at a vet's, or online through PetFoodDirect.com . Hoping that her #s improve very soon.

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126 // Babyfood Squash?

It's not added sugar. It's the sugar contained in the squash. I suppose canned pumpkin would have similar properties.
I just don't know how significant these amounts are.....
The amount of fibre seems so insignificant, compared to that of carb & sugar.

Lucy hates FortfiFloar.
I only use it when I'm more desperate, like continuing puddin' poo.

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126 // Babyfood Squash?

A lot of people do use squash...I'm assuming the natural sugar levels in there aren't TOO bad, but I've never had to use it before. You'll always be able to tell what's what with her BG tests. I think, too. comparing the amount of fiber to sugar and carbs is sort of an apples-to-oranges comparison. Hopefully the squash will help without having a negative effect on her numbers.

Have a great day, Mariko!

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126 // Babyfood Squash?

Thank you, Amy.
I understand that, but I'm comparing pros vs. cons.
No point adding extra sugar/carbs if the fiber amount contained is too small to do anything....

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126 // Babyfood Squash?

Is sugar an ingredient or is it part of the nutritional breakdown? Butternut squash has naturally occurring sugar vs. sugar added. The number of carbs suggests that there's not additional sugar added. I know that Marje has used baby food squash with her kitties and they like it lots better than pumpkin. In addition, it's a little jar so your not wasting a can of pumpkin given how much a cat eats.

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126 // Babyfood Squash?

Sienne,
The ingredients are just butternut squash and water.
The sugar I indicated is part of the nutritional breakdown.
So... naturally occurring sugar isn't too bad for FD???

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126;+2=110;+3=112 // Babyfood Squash?

Hi, Mariko, that's a very nice amps today :-D
I hope Lucy's appy improves and that she's generally feeling better.

FWIW, I gave Ripley squash baby food and canned pumpkin each day (she'd had several bouts of constipation, so I wanted to cover all bases ;-) ). I never saw either of these increase her numbers.

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126;+2=110;+3=112 // Babyfood Squash?

Nice cycle today for Lucy! No pred spike?

Since Neko started getting bupe regularly, I've been adding a 1/2 tsp of the President's Choice Organic BF squash to each of her main meals. I don't think it's impacting her numbers.

For alternates, I've heard of adding psyllium fiber but haven't tried it myself.

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126;+2=110;+3=112 // Babyfood Squash?

Hi Mariko! Lucy is looking nice today :-D . I give the tsp of babyfood squash every day, but I haven't noticed it affecting BG...or poops for that matter. I was wondering if it was helping at all for Chyna, but it's hard to tell with CKD and pumpkin seems to bother her (allergies?) so we've been using squash for the past month or so.

I'm glad Lucy is feeling a bit better, and I hope she perks up with a better appy today for you too. Happy Monday!

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126;+2=110;+3=112 // Babyfood Squash?

Hi Mariko:

I've given Cinco the baby food squash a number of times, and I don't think it affects his BG. I have also used the fiber powder (Psyllium) with no apparent problems. He didn't seem to notice either in his food, but he did not like pumpkin.

Nice blue surf today. Maybe a visit to the lagoon is ahead for our little Lucy?

Have a great day, Mariko.

Re: 2/17 Lucy AMPS=126;+2=110;+3=112 // Babyfood Squash?

You are correct that the sugar is what naturally occurs in the squash. Because of that and because it is such a tiny amount, I do not think it is contraindicated for a diabetic cat. Some of Gracies supplements have honey in them and it's a tiny amount. Mike never noticed that it affects her BG and the benefits far outweigh any concern for it being in the supplements.

It is just as good a source of fiber as pumpkin. If she likes it, I'd not worry. It really did i prove Gus's stools.

Re: 2/17 Lucy PMPS=113;+1=135;+2.5=133

Thank you very much, everyone, for your input.

Lucy just had the prettiest poo in the past several days.
So I think I'll continue with the squash.
For a super finicky eater, Lucy doesn't seem to mind squash, at least not yet.
I am hoping that if her colon health improves, her overall mood/energy/appetite could also improve.
If this can be achieved, having to add a little bit of sugar/carbs is a small price to pay, like Marje said.....

Thank you again.
You are all so wonderful, sharing your experience and knowledge so generously.
