? 2/16 RICO AMPS 84, +7 56, PMPS 77 - Advice on SubQ dosing & alternative stomatitis treatments?

Sorry to hear that Rico is feeling so poorly! :(

I don't have any experience with stomatitis but another member here found that Atopica helped her cat with stomatitis. I think for some cats, extraction is recommended. Did the vet suggest anything for pain? Maybe it's pain and not nausea that's preventing him from eating?

How much Ondansetron are you giving him? 2mg? You can give it a often as every 8 hours, if required.

200 ml of fluids is way too much. For a cat his size, I wouldn't give more than 100 ml/day. You want to give that as 50 ml twice a day - how is his heart?

As for crystals, the fluids will help with that too.

Are you seeing and difference after his getting IV fluids yesterday? Dehydration can also make them feel terrible and affect their appetite.

Do you get Hills a/d food or other "recovery" food there? They are higher in calories and the texture is easy to syringe feed.

Atopica is only available for dogs with skin problems in Greece. We have cleaned Rico's teeth and extracted the molars. They didn't give him anything for the pain and I think you are right - this is the main cause he can't eat. The vet asked him to give Rico 2mg Ondansentron daily - not more. His heart was fine but I also think I'll keep it to 50ml twice a day. I gave him the first 50ml this morning and give the rest in the afternoon. The needle is too thin and it takes forever! He gets anxious after a while and I'm afraid I stress him more by keeping him in place! I got him Brit GI recovery pate but he doesn't like it! Boiled chicken works miracles though! :D

Once a day is not enough. Ondansetron can wear off in 8 hours. You want to do at least twice a day. Does he eat after getting it? It takes 20-30 mins to work. However, if pain is the reason he's not eating, then Ondansetron will not help.

What gauge needle are you using? And do you use an IV set or a syringe to give fluids?

Glad to hear he's eating something eagerly! :-) You could use the recovery pate to syringe feed. It's recommended to syringe feed a different food from what you offer/ what he will really eat because cats can develop an aversion to food they are syringe fed.

I agree that’s too much sub-q fluids. I would give 100 and if still dehydrated give 2x a day. The comment on domino effect is crazy, especially when the vet doesn’t even know you or your cat. Some vets say that with fd as well. Ignore it. :bighug:

I’d give ondansetron every 12 hours and if appetite decreases then every 8. It doesn’t have bad side effects and many need to give it for pancreatitis, scl, and ckd and are not able to able stop it. It’s dose to effect.

Ondanstron: Nausea stopped after his Cerenia shot. Does he really need to take it if not nauseous?
L-R Fluids: I'm using an IV set with a 22 gauge needle.
Food: I mix his usual Animonda pate with tiny bits of boiled chicken and a bit of the chicken broth. He eats a bit more every time! :) I don't want to "push" him because of his GI problem these days.

So, it's not only for nausea! The vet asked me to give it to Rico for 2 weeks but I was about to stop it after 2 days because he's not nauseous any more. Do you suggest I keep giving it?

Cerenia lasts for 24 hours. No need to start ondansetron unless he becomes more picky about food. I didn’t realize Max was nauseous at first because he was eating and not vomiting. For him inappetence was a sign of nausea. If I gave ondansetron he would eat.
