Hello:) Nothing much to report today, which is good I guess after yesterday:) Ear drops last night were not such a hit, will be doing those shortly but maybe wrapped in a towel  . I'm waiting for Chyna to pee to test for ketones...she is a little less purry but that may be because she is thinking now what every time I go near? Still pooping&peeing, eating a little less than usual but I've heard that is normal for lower glucose? And maybe from the antibiotics/sore tooth, etc. She's still finishing most of the meals eventually, just not inhaling the entire thing. All meals last night were eaten:) She did just open a bottom cuboard for me, look in and leave, so she's feeling a little nosy or mischevious, or whatever it means when she does that, LOL. I got some sleep, think I need more but I'm awake for now! Hope you all have a good day!

 I think she was looking for some treats maybe! That's what my GA kitty used to do and then slam the cupboard.
Nice report on Chyna today and nice blue AMPS, too. Wishing you both a nice day.

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146

Thanks, you too:) She used to go around and open several cuboards in the bathroom and the kitchen all the time before she had diabetes diagnosed, so it's nice to see again:) Which is why I keep all the cleaning supplies and garbages in baby proofed cuboards. My mom laughed her behind off when I installed those locks when I moved into this house! My old apartment had catches that she couldn't pull open and a lot more convenient places of storage for kitties to not be able to get to

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146

Glad you found out the cause, hope you got some sleep last night!! @-) ....good number for today, Yeah for Chyna!!! :-D :-D :-D

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146

I LOVE the flat blue! Nicely done, Chyna. :-D :-D :-D Of course you would install cat-proof locks to keep Chyna out of the cleaning supplies - what's so funny about that?   That's what I love about this place, that's totally reasonable behavior around here. I'm glad you got some good sleep, Rachel. Paws crossed on the ketones.

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146

I'm glad Chyna seems to be feeling better.

You're right -- as numbers get better, appetite decreases. The reason is that the glucose is getting into the cells vs. floating around in the blood. Nutrition is getting where it's supposed to go so you're kitty isn't starving.

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146

Is this what the ear drops look like:

If yes, then it is a steroid - Synotic is a topical corticosteroid with DMSO used in the treatment of inflammation and itching of the ear.

And here is how to use it:

How is it given?
Synotic is given topically. The ear should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before treatment. Remove any debris, crusty material, etc., with a suitable non-irritating ear cleaning solution. Clip any excessive hair from the ear or treatment area, as directed.

Apply the prescribed amount in the ear and gently massage the ear to distribute the medication. Avoid contact with the eyes. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian.

Wear gloves when applying Synotic. Avoid contact with your bare skin. The DMSO is rapidly absorbed through the skin, enters the blood stream, and causes an unpleasant taste in the mouth for a short time. Avoid contact with the treated area until it has dried.

Do NOT give Synotic by mouth.

What results can I expect?
The anti-itching component of Synotic occurs quite rapidly (within hours). The anti-inflammatory effect may take longer.

so, if this is what you are using - then you may need to adjust the insulin if you see it going higher.

The sucky part is, I am not sure there are any ear medicines that do not contain steroids. So, you are kind of stuck using one that does. Now you know that it has it and can affect BG's and as Sienne mentioned yesterday, you can adjust your dose to take that into consideration.

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146

Yes, that is the ear drops I have, thanks for the info:) I just hope the ear drops got mostly in where they need to go, I think I just wore them! Even though I massaged the ear...then she shook her head and now she is scratching at her ears again:( Nice to know that I'm not the only one shopping in the Baby section for her cat ;-) I like the blue too, might change with the antibiotics and stuff but she needs to have those infections taken care of so what can you do...I'm happy to know her weight has gone up since diagnosis since she was underweight (yesterday the vet scale gave the exact number I have on the postal scale I bought to weigh Chyna) and she isn't starving!

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146

When you put the drops in her ears, are you squeezing the ear shut to keep the stuff in and massage - this will ensure that it's getting in and then she will shake her head and the "excess" will fly out - it's just the way it is....nothing to worry about....

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146 +6 115

The AM +6 is looking good:) Yes, for the ear drops I did try to squeeze the ear shut and massage, I think I need 4 hands for doing the drops! Kitty got wise to pill pockets and refused the antibiotic this morning, I had to crush them in a tsp of tuna water to get her to take them. Finally got pee, and ketones is somewhere between trace and small, it's so hard to tell. It's not bright pink like "small", but has some pink undertone. Hopefully this will disappear as the antibiotics kick in, but since they didn't increase I will leave it (vet said to call if they increased). We had some purring and petting going on this morning and Chyna seems happy and ate most of each of her mini meals.

It's weird for Feb but we have decent weather at 3C here, so I think it's time to go chip some of that snow and ice off my sidewalk! Hope your days are going great!

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146 +6 115

add extra water to her food - if you already add water, add more - maybe even syringe water into her as this will help flush out the ketones.

Re: 2/16 Chyna AMPS 146 +6 115 PMPS 146

I was adding water but added even more water to her food each time. Filling the water dish in front of her makes her want to drink so we did that today too, she likes cool fresh water even though she drinks lukewarm too:) I have dishes all over the house. I have a pet fountain too, but it's a plastic one she used to love and now ignores no matter how often I clean it...I think I need to get a stainless steel one...
