Good Morning. I've still been too scared to give the PM shot because I wouldn't be able to monitor him so much. I gave AM shot this morning and just tried to take his BG. I poked him about four or five times with no luck. I'm giving him a break and will try again. He seems fine though.

Hi there, just took a look at Rocky's SS. Are you only shooting in the mornings? With numbers this low, it would be interesting to see what his nadir looks like.

Do you have a rice sock? If not, you can try heating up a washcloth for about a minute and then press that to his ear. The warmth draws the blood to the surface and makes it easier to get a drop. Also, the more frequently you test, the more capillaries develop. It gets easier the more you practice.

Wow--great numbers! He may be on his way to OTJ!!! Awesome

Maybe this will help with your testing: I know a lot of people don't test paw pads, but I do test Gobby on his back paw pads, with no problems or infections or brusing! And I do so, often. For me, it is much easier than poking an ear that has been endlessly poked. Also handy if I can't keep my hand steady. I do sometimes test him from his ears, but sometimes just want to give his ears a break and sometimes give me a break. I do use a thicker lancet (28 gauge) on his foot. Same thing as the ear--warm up the back paw pad and then poke--Gobby doesn't even flinch (though sometimes shys away from me when I test from the ear). I always, always put 20 seconds of pressure and then make sure to put some triple antibiotic w/pain relief on the paw pad. Sometimes I don't get enough blood, so I just try it again. Gobby is such a good cat! I sit on the floor and put him sitting on my lap (belly up) then put the test supplies on my right side and his treat on my left...then poke the paw pad, squeeze to get a blood droplet, grab the glucometer and a strip, draw blood, pressure, antibiotic....very easy.

Courtney and Kismet - I have only been shooting once a day for fear of not being able to monitor him at night because of work. I do have a rice sock and that's what I use. Not sure why I had so much trouble. I know he would wave his paw at his ear before or after I poke him. Another time blood just seemed to soak right into fur.

TheBowHuntress - I really don't think he would let me test his paws. He's not the lay on his back friendly type. He could though because I thought he wouldn't ever let me poke his ears either, so it's possible.

Good Morning ~O) and good luck with his testing. Maybe, maybe he'd not mind the ole' foot poke.... I'm very lucky that Gobbles is so laid back; though he knows that he may as well get it over with because one way or another, Mom will get his blood!!!
