? 2/14 Owl AMPS 115, +3 89, PMPS 72 - when to consider OTJ trial?

Owl's numbers have mostly been in the normal range lately on just the barest sliver of insulin. How do I know when to move forward with bumping him down to a drop dose, or going off insulin completely? Both his vet and a consulting vet think he's likely already in remission and suggested only giving insulin once per day. I agree that if he isn't in remission already then he's likely heading that direction, but I want to make sure I support him so that he can have a strong remission. Any advice is appreciated :cat:

Hope everyone had a nice Valentines day!

Hi Amy, I can’t advise as to dosing, but Trixie went into remission at the end on November last year. If you have a look at her 2025 SS tab you can see what her numbers were when we tried an OTJ trial. I, like you wanted to be sure she had a strong remission and made sure she was all green for seven days on a dose before I would reduce.

Are you feeding Owl a small snack later in his cycle? Sometimes a small snack at +9 can help bring down pre-shot numbers.

I am feeding a small snack at +9 during the day and have noticed it does seem to bring down the PM numbers. I haven't figured out how to get him a snack at +9 before his AM shot though because that's at 3:30am and my auto feeder is already loaded with his breakfast.

I can see how that would be an inconvenience.

Owl’s numbers are very good and you are doing an amazing job with him. He’s definitely heading in the right direction. Hopefully one of the more experienced members will stop in and offer some dosing advice for you.

Here's a post that might answer your questions: Reminder: *earning* reductions and starting OTJ trials

With regards to Owl, I'd like to see him get rid of those blue preshots and that +9 overnight snack might help. Why is his breakfast in the autofeeder? Typically we test, feed (breakfast), then shoot insulin, so breakfast is manually fed, not via autofeeder.
He is tested before the auto feeder is set to go off, and I give insulin after he eats the first meal.

Would it be possible to put a +9 snack in the autofeeder and manually give him breakfast instead of using the autofeeder?

I did put a +9 in last night and then readied his breakfast this morning before his shot. He was a bit lower this morning than he has been the past few days.
