Woohoo! We still have power, which means we have heat!! It looks like I have about 3-4 inches of snow in my backyard and it is still falling. But we are in the back edge of the storm so hopefully it makes for some good pictures and clear put for summer! :lol:

On the Cobb front...looks like we have a little NDW going on. I'll never understand how giving more insulin results in higher numbers, but it is what it is. All Ps are in place and appetite is good.

One thing I have noticed since switching him off the dry food...I'm not sure he's drinking from his water bowls anymore. I add water to his wet food...several teaspoons. Sometimes it's soupy even. Is that something I need to be concerned about? Keep an eye on? He is peeing and pooping just fine - and he's acting like he feels great, unless he's in the 300s nowadays and then he's a little lazier.

Hope everyone is staying warm. Those on the east coast...the storm is on it's way!

NDW seems to happen when the insulin dose has been changed, whether it's a dose increase or decrease. Usually the #s seem to settle down within or after a few days, sometimes a bit longer depending on the kitty.

With regards to the amount of water in the food, if you think that the amount of water you're giving him is making his meals too soupy, you can try an experiment, and cut down the amount of water that you're giving him and see what he does. Some people give only a few teaspoons in the food, and others perhaps a bit more. Then there are people, like myself, that give only a few drops. As long as he's getting some water in his meals that's the main thing as you want to keep him hydrated. If he goes to the bowl on top of that, that's fine too as he needs to drink.

Hang in there. His #s will improve over time, and you're both doing a wonderful job. :-D

NDW is one of those head-scratchers, isn't it? But, then again, just about everything FD has the potential to be a head-scratcher :lol: !

I make Trix's fuds pretty soupy, too. He's probably drinking less from the bowls because he's getting water in his food, and because the insulin is helping get his diabetes under control. Good stuff!!

I am so glad you still have power...prayers that it stays that way!

I also hate NDW! It's confusing for sure :o . I hope it settles down for Cobb soon :-D . I hope you stay safe and warm, and that the power stays on. Have a great Thursday!

Glad to hear you did not lose power. (hopefully we won't either)

looks like Cobb has found the down elevator after that brief visit to the 3rd floor. . .

Regarding water consumption - The first night we took BK in, I put out a 1cup plastic container full of water for him.
He woke me up in the middle of the night (he is very vocal) i could not figure out what the problem was until I noticed the entire 8oz of water was gone.

I had to use the type of water feeder in the below photo and as you can see he stayed very close to it. It was heartbreaking.

He drank several cups per day early on - I used to mark the starting level with a post it each day and track it.
Once he got on insulin that gradually changed and we were able to switch to a regular water bowl.
I too add water to his food - a habit I started back when we were battling ketones.
I can't say when it happened but there came a time that I realized that although fresh water is always available I had not seen him drink water.

I honestly don't know if he ever does, however I don't worry about it, being that I add water to his food.

It's a good habit to add water to a sugar-kittys food - one that I recommend.

Yes. We add water to every see I g. I just wanted to make sure that was enough since I don't think he's drinking from the water bowl itself anymore.

Hi!

Here we are in our normally snowy mountain town experiencing record highs. We are all very concerned because of drought. Our alpine forest needs it's snow pack..

I also add quite a bit of water to Ole's FF, it's quite soupy. I started this well before I joined FDMB in an effort to slow Ole's meals down. Knowing that Ole is getting water at the same time as he is getting his nutrients gives me peace of mind. There is always fresh water for him to top up, but I rarely see him at it. We also have the added need for plenty of hydration living in an alpine desert.

Enjoy your snow and stay safe. May Cobb continue his slide down today.

Darn NDW! I always took that as a chance to do other things, except for the times when Neko decided to really work the first cycle of a new dose. :lol: Work that juice Cobb!

I hope little bean is getting out and enjoying the snow again - who knows when you'll get it again. It's surprising that Atlanta has seen way more snow than us in Canada. OK, we are on the wet coast, but still....

Neko wasn't drinking a lot of extra water before Dx. Some days maybe 1/4 cup, but I still occasionally see her drinking. She has always been good at that. The civie on the other hand, not so much. I've seen him drink maybe twice since we switched to raw 2 years ago. I do add water for both, and more to his because he has a history of crystals. When you are next at the vet, the blood work and a basic urinalysis will tell if Cobb is getting enough water. My other trick for seeing if they are getting enough is how wet the poo is. Dry ones need a bit more water. I'm watching the LB to see if one is peeing to much and the other too little. :roll: Love the skills we develop. :lol: :lol:

It's a puzzler, isn't it? (referring to both the water consumption and the NDW). One of the first things I noticed about Cinco when he got sick initially was how much water he drank. He lived next to the bowl and always had his face in it. Next was how much he peed. As we got him regulated, the visits to the water bowl became fewer and fewer, and so did the volume in the lb. Now I know when he's not doing well by how long he hangs at the water bowl and how much pee is in the lb. He usually stops by the water after a meal, but lately doesn't stay long. I have been adding more water to his food, so I suspect that's the reason. His poo is moist but firm, so I feel he's getting enough water. Hope that helps. (Love these conversations! :lol: TMI? )

Good luck with that new dose. Hope Cobb settles into it and gives you some good numbers soon.
 
every time i see the snow across the south on the news (and it's been on our news quite a bit!) i think of you guys. glad you have power!

Nice to see mr cobb in yellow tonight!
