2/10 Lolly OTJ Day 10 AMBG/87, PMBG/100.


At 7:30am, before eating, Lollie's AMBG was 132; at +1 it dropped to 78. +5/50, PMBG/89. So Chris' Dawn Syndrome theory may be at work here? But doesn't Dawn Syndrome only apply to diabetics? Anyway, she often seems a little high in the am. ECID

Every day Lolly is going back to her old self. Today she did the let's crawl under the covers at 5am and wake the beans move.;)
 
Yes, I know. I didn't phrase that well. What I meant is, if she is showing a "Dawn Syndrome" response, does that mean her remission is not as "strong" as it might be? Also, could you tell me what the recommended schedule for testing is for new remissions? Thanks
 
You might drop to weekly for a couple weeks, then monthly. Logging the whole cat report or 5 Ps on a regular basis is a good way to identify if things are changing, whether it is diabetes or not. See my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for a number of additional assessments you can make.
 
Even totally normal, never diabetic in their lives (humans and cats) have the "Dawn Phenomenon"

It's normal for the body to have a surge of hormones in the early morning hours that raises BG

As long as her numbers are going down after food, her pancreas is working to bring down the BG's! :)

I have been thinking about you! I saw you and Lolly took the leap weekend before last and while I watch for your posts, i have just been in crazy hectic stretch with almost zero down time and have not had a chance to get on and write.
I was biting my nails when I saw she went on the trial...I remember being almost as afraid to stop insulin with Hank as I was when we started. I was weaning him by drops and even then I was threatened they would have to come steal my syringes to get me to stop shooting. I was so afraid and worried it would 'take'.
But that is why they call it a trial..the worse thing that happens is if they turn out to need a bit more support you can always just hop back on if needed.
Lolly was screaming her way down. I am not sure what to tell you about the creeping AM numbers...clearly she is bringing herself down so 'Ms. P' is working! Keep posting as long as you need to for feedback if needed to be sure she stays on track.

I related so much when you said a few threads back....
because, whatever you say, I don't feel like an "old hat" :). In fact the whole thing was so fast, my head is still spinning. So I was thinking, they won't really want me to help, how can I stay in touch. I don't think I'm qualified to give advice on the condos. But I would feel honored to do what I can, I want to stay on the board and give back. How do I continue learning? Should I "lurk" on the condos

I think I mentioned to you early on this is how we felt too. I totally had no idea what was going on WHILE it was going on..the whole thing was a whirlwind. But yes, it all became clearer in the rear view mirror. I think when here you have to sort of surrender at times to those who can see what you cannot. And reading other condos and sharing experiences is exactly how you learn. Somebody else kitty throws them curveballs you may have never seen..but you see what they do or try and the results and you become more fluent and have a bigger bag of tricks.
I love hearing how your clan is metamorphosing on LC food. I can't even recall what you had them on. And did you say 6 cats!!! Holy smokes! I do recall Hank becoming a kitten again once I switched his diet, it was like taking 10 years off his life. I think also like many of us he had been sick for awhile before I caught it...I just thought he was napping all the time like a middle aged cat. But getting his little body an insulin kick start and feeding him correctly changed everything.
I love hearing how she is getting back to her old self. Please know I am rooting for you, and have been...I am so sorry I haven't been able to get on as much as I wanted to let you know. I have been TEAM LOLLY from the get go.

Vyktor has been in remission for nearly three years but I still test him once a week a) because it's easier to remember to do it every weekend than it is to remember once a month, and b) if it ever comes back I want to be right on top of it. I generally don't do the test first thing in the morning though because the number is always a bit higher and I don't like to see it :woot:
 
On the testing thing, I think we tested once a day at first, then a few times a week, then tapered to once a week, then couple times a month, once a month, etc. You always want to test if they seem off at any point. That is a big indicator of something else not being right once they have been OTJ and stable awhile. Usually its a sign of infection, bad teeth, etc... with a vet visit in order
 
So Vyktor's is higher first thing too? I think I'll test Lolly a little later too:)! Betty, I wonder if I should ask the vet about doing whatever preemptive things we can - like cleaning teeth (she's had one), etc, since diabetics are more susceptible to infection. What other things could be done preemptively? (I mean in addition to regular health care)

Betty! I'm so happy to hear from you! :joyful: BTW, we are allowed to have lives outside the FDMB- so please don't apologize-- I just hope things quite down for you. Of course I knew you were rooting for Team Lolly! You, BJ and Marge (and everyone else I'm missing!) got her where she is. It's funny, I think we had opposite reactions to taking the leap; I was sooo relieved not to have to give her insulin. I was freaking having to deal with possible hypos one after another- especially when I was at work- as the dose went ever lower. It felt safer to me to take her off the juice. I've been looking over her spreadsheet trying to reconstruct everything and understand it, and it's clear she came down so fast, that I'm not sure I was ever following the protocol. I think we started dropping doses without the low nadir criterion.

She's almost there! ( Though I have to ask everyone, do you ever stop worrying about the day she might have to go back on the juice?)

More awakenings within Lolly's Pride: Her former sloth of a brother, who turned up his whiskers at anything but Science Diet dry, has become a bone fide people food beggar. He's figured out what cats are supposed to eat! Yes, this LC thing is wreaking havoc in my home, turning lazy cats into bad mannered tigers. The naughty boy (all 20 lbs of him) jumped up on the table last night to get at our chicken entrees. Worse- I put him down, and he jumped right back up. DH and I were so shocked, Mickey made off with a drumstick:eek:! (Quickly retrieved)
 
You've awakened their inner carnivore! Omg, science diet dry...the worst.

I keep thinking of these things you said in earlier condos I didn't get a chance to comment on. One is in response to someone saying how you usually wait for more green to start a trial (or something close to that)....and you commented that you had not had that many green cycles, but what you never realized or connected was that lots/many of those blues WERE greens in HUMAN meter terms. I think the AT kept things totally confusing... You were often greener than you realized, but on the flip side also thought you were hypo when you weren't ( just low but normal). Truth is Lolly is a pretty good little surfer....she just likes to surf the lows.

Yes we hung on for dear life...the joke was after a drop the next dose down was 'essence of insulin';) ...likely some of those were placebo....but I was hanging on to the crutch. But in the end he flew great on his own.

Wow-- you are right! Thanks so much for pointing that out. A lot of those blues were greens. The Alphatrak thing hopelessly confused me. In truth, I'm still confused. o_O Mathematically speaking, is the human meter really a straight 60% of the alpha? It's probably a little more complex curve. I've used BJ's glucometer notes to construct a little comparison chart (not really a graph) on another sheet on Lolly's spreadsheet. It was to help me translate when things were going crazy (maybe you can look at it sometime, comment on it) I still need to understand the Alpha numbers so I an go back and interpret Lolly's spread sheet-- especially now.

I am still taking some Alpha readings for my vet. She gave me quite the talking to when I told her I wanted to use the Human meter. If hundreds of FDMB are successfully monitoring their cats on human meters and getting them into remission, I can't believe the alpha is necessary.

The alpha isn't necessary(obviously) And I'd like to give your vet a talking to for raising Lolly's dose a whole 1U... Lolly has only needed lowering since we met.
You were her guinea pig, she just doesn't have the experience that is here.... Maybe you can teach and help her get up to date. At least she wants to be progressive.... I think the conversion is more like human meter is 65%
AT (they say 30-40% and that's down the middle) But considering the +/- 20% allowed variance, that can always skew. I think we are going to have to send you to AT rehab.
 
Congrats on day 11!!!

If you didn't copy the directions for the trial down when you got them 11 days ago, better go back and retrieve them. The directions include what you need to know post 14 day trial time. It's more than just testing.
