2/11 Kona +13/AMPS 205, PMBG 306, at the ER

Awww :( Sending vines to Kona and civvie:bighug::bighug:

When you're able to, ask the regular vet how off hours situations like this should be handled and if the ER can have some record on file that they can prescribe medicine without needing an exam. Or maybe the vet can write you a prescription for any meds you may potentially need like ondansetron and you fill it as needed. My vet will prescribe meds for my cats without an exam, not something he does for other clients. He's even prescribe sterile saline I needed for the rats and he's not an exotics vet :D He just put the prescription under Leroy's name. The cats can use sterile saline if they ever needed it for dehydration or flushing gunk out of eyes so it wasn't a big deal.

ER wait times have been super long since the beginning of the pandemic but ERs, and many other businesses, are still dealing with limited staff and resources so it's understandable. Is there a way you can call the ER to let them know that you have an emergency coming in and how soon you could be seen upon arrival? Giving them a heads up may shorten the wait time. When my rat popped open her surgical incision (again:rolleyes:) I called the ER to let them know of our expected arrival and we were seen shortly after arriving. Are there any urgent care vet clinics in your area? Wait times might be shorter there, even for walk ins although a phone call before you head out the door with cats in tow is helpful.

Thank you so much for all your support!

Vines for a fast appointment, and the proper treatment.

They took her back now and are running bloodwork. Should be about 30 minutes for the results. Kona doesn’t do well with blood draws without gaba, so hopefully they are assertive.

They didn’t have it on the list, so I asked for both fPL tests. They want to do the in house and go from there

I preemptively asked for ondansetron and the tech was confused as she hasn’t been vomiting. She said she “would ask”

I’ll do my best to get everything I can done for tests and any medications they will give me that you all suggest.

I’ll ask for recovery food as well.

Thanks everyone!

Side note: Kona goes in the back and then this entire ER hospital cleared out, the vines are strong, cleared the way!!! Thank you!

Sending you and Kona these too :bighug::bighug::bighug:

If they don't have the Royal Canin Recovery, A/D is another option good for syringing but a slightly higher carb%. Neko actually liked the Recovery. With some cats (as with her) if you get a little in with the syringe it "primes the pump" so to speak and they eat on their own.

How is Kona with pilling? Ondansetron comes in either pills or injection form. Different dosing for the two. Injection version could sting (keep it cold), but it easier to get in if cat is refusing anything in their mouth. At least where I live, the pills version is easier to get. FYI, Zofran is the brand name of the pills, but you want the generic ondansetron as it is a lot cheaper.

They are giving her sub q fluids.
They gave her an injection of a different type of appetite stimulant that works for 24 hours, while also sending me home will pill form.
They are giving her pain meds and are giving me more to take home.
They are giving me both Ondansetron and Cerenia.

They did all the bloodwork, all insignificant.

They are sending off for a culture test to see if there is an infection.

They did fPL that gives numbers, they were normal.

They did not give any insulin.

They did not see any ketones.

I am to go home to try to feed her. They are sending me home with different foods. I will ask for Royal Canin Recovery if it’s not offered.

I will see how she is at breakfast tomorrow, if she eats, will give her shot.

Suspect GI issues, if she doesn’t get better in a day or two, move to ultrasound.

Any chance you could get the name of the injection they gave as an appetite stimulant? Should be on the bill. Also, what type of pain meds?

I would give at least half a dose. Cats not able to eat due to getting anaesthesia can get a half dose. If she's higher than she's used to lately, that might also make her feel unwell.

Did you get copies of the blood work and urinalysis?

Cerenia is not an appy stimulant, but I'm glad she got it. Buprenorphine also a good choice. Not sure she'll need it and gabapentin but at least you have the options now.

Prescription diet? What is that?

I probably won’t get out of here until 1am. I have an hour drive. That puts me home around 2am.

I did bring her insulin, it’s in the car now in a powered refrigerator.

Should I give 0.5U as soon as I walk out? That will be about 6 hours before her shot.

Or skip?

Her normal shot time is 7am.

I thought she was giving a appetite stimulant injection… I will ask.
She threw in gaba just in case I need it.
The diet food is bland foods to help keep it down, she said it was lower carb. I told the techs to throw in Recovery as well.

Can you get a test now to see what her BG is?

You could either give a shot at 1am and the next one at her usual time tomorrow evening (7pm) - that would be two 18-hour cycles or just skip and get some sleep give it at 7am.
Don't think Wendy is still around to advise.

I just got home from the ER. BG 405 at 3:12am. =(

I'm thinking I might as well skip at this time and wait until 6:00am. I'll make that my new shot time and I will work back slowly to the 7am.
