Hello LL,

Just want to provide an update on Rex.
Well he has a bad molar that needs to come out.

He started turning his nose up at Wellness food.
I have tried several LC food and no luck - He was eating Purina DM (not my first choice - but I have to pick my battles)

Surgery is on Thursday and he is on pain meds for his tooth.

Anyone have advice on stimulating appetites?
Heading to the vet in 30 minutes for another checkup prior to surgery.

Hope everyone is doing well!!!!

Thanks So Much,
Rich & Rex.

Re: 2/10 Rex - Update

If you are looking for something nonprescription, have you tried adding some FortiFlora to Rex's food? If he likes baby food, maybe adding a little of that to get him interested may be an option. There's all the usual stuff:

Enticing a Cat to Eat
(Cheryl & Winnie)

Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
- forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
- parm. cheese
- smashed crumbles of dry food
- bonito tuna flakes
- halo chicken treats -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
- poor a little water from tuna in water over food ( I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats-- check labels)
-powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
- trader joe tuna for cats
-baby food -- beechnut turkey and broth or chicken and broth. they have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
- kentucky fried chicken
- deli turkey /chicken
- plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
-canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
- chicken broth -- low sodium

If enticements don't work, you should consider:
-assist feeding ( syringe or make little meatballs and place in mouth)
-and/or talking to your vet about appetite stimulents ( mirtazapine or cyproheptidine)

Re: 2/10 Rex - Update

Hi Rich. Sorry to hear about the bad molar, but getting rid of it may help his numbers. Please pass on some extra scritches from me to Rex.

Other things I've heard people use for appy are FortiFlora sprinkled on top, parmesan cheese, bonito flakes, freeze dried meat sprinkles (chicken, shrimpies, liver etc.) and for some even oregano works. FD chicken sprinkles is the winner here. If Rex's tooth is bothering him, that probably contributes to lack of appy. Some people have found that some batches of Wellness are better than others. There are two plants, one is the US and one in Canada. You can see it on the tiny print on the can. Some cats will eat only the Wellness from one or the other place.

If he's going to get antibiotics afterwards, you might want to get some probiotics, so Fortiflora might be worth a try. What pain meds is he on?

Darn, just noticed Sienne beat me to it.

Re: 2/10 Rex - Update/Response PMPS 268

Chris, Sienne, and Wendy,

Thank you so much for helping Rex. Once we get past this last nasty molar, I really hope we will be in a better place.

We were able to get into see the vet this evening and she gave Rex B12 (appetite), 100cc fluid (hydration), and Buprenorphine for the tooth pain.
In preparation for his surgery, Rex is on antibiotics.

Once we got home, he ate 2oz of DM and then I gave him his insulin.
I was sent home with fluid to just incase Rex need them for the next couple of days.

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions, I will pick some items up tonight.

Big Hugz

Re: 2/10 Rex - Update/Response PMPS 268

P.S. Sorry I have not been on for a while.
I am a little crazed right now. Was in a car accident almost a month ago.

Someone hit me at 45 mph while I was at a full stop. I am ok - No broken bones just Physical Therapy.
Only had my car for 8 months and now totaled! :( But it did the job and protected me - bought it for all the safety features.
Sucks the responsible party does not have insurance, I do have full insurance and uninsured motorist.

Life has been in the toilet - Rex raises my spirits and so want to do anything to fix him up and make him feel better!

I really appreciate everyone here!

Good to see Rex has appy for the HC! Pain meds and fluids might be making him feel better and lowering the numbers.

I missed you Rich. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: I hope things turn around for you.
