Yesterday's thread

Naturally we have our very first yellow AMPS _ever_ on the very same morning we are increasing by .25u to 1.5u 2x/day. It's great that he didn't bounce overnight but also we've seen him drop from a red AMPS to a high blue by +5 on 1.25u so...yeah. Kinda wondering just how low he'll go on 1.5u when combined with a yellow PS.

Fed him a little extra at shot time, will look to monitor closely today and test at least as much as I did yesterday morning if not more. More food at +1 coming up.

+2 coming in at 173, that's quite the drop damn. Thought he carb-loaded enough to make that a more gradual drop than that.

15% carb snack at +2, gotta offset that 1.5u or his nadir is going to be crazy low and probably make his liver panic

He’s a wonderful cat! I loved the video. You guys are wonderful pet parents. Do you have another cat?

Do we ever. We were once a two-cat household and thought that was perfect. But then, I saw this litter of just two Siamese cats, one light one dark like Yin and Yang and I couldn't separate them of course so our two-cat household became 4 (Hendrick and his brother Shylo)

So four was a good number and we had no plans to get any more kitties.

And then two rescues came into our lives one after the other and here we are with SIX lol

Hendrick, Shylo, Roxy, Oreo, Kayla and Chester. 3 traditional Siamese, one black Siamese/Oriental Shorthair, one Russian Blue and one ASH Tabby. This is my life now lol.

A man after my own heart! We have you beat! But then we do cat rescue so it’s natural that we have too many (but we love them all!)

Well, now we know that +2 isn't a reliable indicator for him LOL

Given that AMPS he probably went low-mid blue last night, but didn't bounce which is awesome.

We have a saying that a flat yellow cycle often means action to follow. In Hendricks case, this seems to be true for pink as well. If you look at the last two days, he was flat, then can reasonably infer he went lower at night (bounce yesterday AM, low PS today). So now I would say whenever he has a flat day, try a PM +3 and see if that's a better indicator than +2

That 102 is awesome! Probably bounce later but that's ok. Still good numbers, we'll see what +4 is (with that momentum I probably would have done a +3.5 but that's ok, you just might get a little excitement this way).

I see green :D, give him a couple bites of the food you've been giving, looks like he's starting a nice little surf now . I'd check +5 to see whether he's still flat, and if he's rising then you can probably take a pokie break. Gotta run to a meeting/telecom, but I'm thrilled for you guys, good job! How is Hendrick feeling?

I tell you what, even if I didn't know he was in the green, I could almost tell from his behavior.

seems so full of vim and vigor right now, wanted pets and more pets and more, just purring like mad....seems more like how he was pre-DX than I've seen him yet
Fabulous :cat: Sometimes when they get used to being in higher numbers, they're a bit blah in the greens. It took Mav a little while to like being in blues and greens. Sending a few extra pats for Hendrick, so glad to hear he's feeling good ;)

It's an addictive thing :D the old behavior alone is worth the extra work/stress/whatever you want to call it

I maybe overdid it a smidge with the MC snacks as I was a bit worried he would drop super low without, first day on 1.5u and all that

at the same time, I am kinda relieved he is no longer dropping

It is fine. Really with the meter variance it’s close to what he was before. And you still have a long way to go in this cycle so I wouldn’t worry about having given too many carbs. It’s not like he shot way up.

I can't believe I got my testing legs just in time for this, holy hell. Just a week ago I would have not been ready
Do the other cats get jealous or try to butt in when he’s getting all these small bits of food?

well thankfully we can easily segregate during my at home work day -- he stays with me in the home office area which is connected to our bedroom, rest of the kitties have the run of the entire house otherwise. In fact the biggest issue is when our oldest, Roxy, hears me giving him a post-poke treat. She hears that from the other side of the house

Maybe sometime you should surprise the others by going out and giving snacks for all! :joyful:

yeah I generally do give them a snack same time as he gets one. Don't want to create any issues yknow

I honestly think Chester, our ASH rescue, has withdrawn from me a little as of late with me just so focused on Hendrick. We had really cemented a strong bond in the past year but lately he isn't quite as friendly.

Tricky business, all these cats and their purrrsonalities and wants and needs

you have a relaxed cat … let’s give him credit!

very good point, he is awesome. Any of the other five would be a very very different story

+6 ringing in at 118 so definitely on the rise, think we'll call it a day until PMPS. His poor ears.

unless I should still grab a +9 just to see how fast/not fast he is rising post-nadir?

Not sure how needed that data is

This was from a couple of days ago. I’m copying it over here so as not to bump up the older post.

@FrostD said: Once they get to 2.4-2.5 it's guaranteed DKA

This was not true in my case. My Darcy boy had ketones anywhere from 2-5 (sometimes higher) and didn’t go into DKA. I was terrified that he would, but he never did. This was after he had been in DKA and I nearly lost him. The reason he went into DKA was an infection— I mean the infection was the tipping point that sent him over into DKA. His BG at the time were mostly yellow (when he had to be hospitalized for a week.). His ketones came down after hospitalization for a week. But then they went back up again and stayed up for a long time (with some fluctuations, of course.) But no more DKA.

Oh that's good to know! I do believe the study statistics said something like 99% of cats were diagnosed with DKA, with an error margin of a few %, I'd have to go root through it again

Wow. It’s definitely scary! I was taking him to the vet all the time for a while when they went really high. They thought I was nuts, I think. They would do a urine ketone test and tell me that it was just fine. I never could get them to take my blood ketone meter seriously. The blood meters and the urine strips measure two different things. I did a lot of research on it to boost my own confidence in the meter.

You’re a quick study! And you have a relaxed cat … let’s give him credit!

btw, we've been using 27G lancets to do the Hendrick Pokey. I just ordered some 30G lancets, with the hope that at this point, we can move to a finer needle that won't cause as much discomfort. Our meter doesn't like those tiny drops though -- but I have also ordered a One Touch Ultra so we'll see when that arrives how it does with micro-droplets.
