I've never felt so awake one minute after my alarm going off. Simba is acting normal, purring loudly in the kitchen and begging for food. Thank you! :)
 
15mins after the first test he's at 56. He's got 50grams of 1.9%. I can always carb him up if necessary, he won't mind additional food.
 
No. You do need to make sure he doesn’t drop after eating though. It won’t be the depot working. There might be carry ver from last night’s shot.
 
Just feed normally and only lc. I’d get a test somewhere around the middle of the day. If he hadn’t dropped so low yesterday you would have been able to shoot this morning after stalling and rising without food according to TR. This skip should help drain the depot.

Okay. I’ll give him some more food at +3 and check his BG around +7/+8. Does that sound good? What do you think about tonight’s dose?
 
Since two out of three tests were over 50, you could assume he probably was over 50. Or waiting 15-20 minutes without feeding then test again to make sure he was either flat or rising. Neko gave me preshots in the 40 many times, and always came up if I waited a little while. She always got her shot in those cases.

Too late now, but if you get 40's again, there are instruction is the Sticky Note Tight Regulation: Becoming Data Ready to Shoot / Handle Lower Pre-shot Numbers on what to do when you see those lower numbers in the 40's. At some point, you will have to become more comfortable with shooting those lower numbers. Simba seems to really like spending as much time as possible in green. :D

Simba is playing nicely with his uncle Pichu. He is behaving more and more like his old playful and cuddly self! A forever-kitten :cat:

My two cents here. I think he might have been dropping lower at night and probably never needed 3.0 units of Novolin. I’d have to read up on how that insulin works better though. Then if there was a bid diet change and Lantus is a better insulin he started healing.

I feel very guilty saying this... a few years back when the vet said Simba needs to go on a hypoallergenic diet I started feeding him Hill's z/d. The 33% stuff. He was eating that mixed with the cans I have for MC for a year and a half. With z/d kibble as well, so he gained almost 2kg!

In September 2020 he got a cortisone shot to treat his occasional asthma attacks and was put on a diet, where we cut the amount of food offered back by 25%. Then fast forward a few months later when I suspected he had diabetes he had lost 1.5kg. The vet still encouraged to keep his current diet for his "allergies".

Just before Christmas the vet said he could try Royal Canin Diabetic wet food. Then it was still a mix of z/d and RC to make the transition easier, plus Hill's m/d kibble. And after joining the FDMB kibble is out of his life and I have a pantry full of LC.

The diet change has been massive, and he's done so well! And I have seen no more chin acne, no more gooey infected eyes, no diarrhoea and no dandruff. No coughing anymore either.

I still feel like I need to figure out the perfect amount of kcal/grams to feed him daily, to encourage those last 500grams to come off slowly. 6kg was his ideal weight.

Don’t feel guilty. You were listening to your vet and he’s supposed to know. What I find the most interesting and boy am I glad we are having this discussion is that his diabetes is steroid induced!!!! Many cats that are steroid induced go OTJ quickly. I usually ask about that with a new cat to me. I must remember to always ask.

When I took him in before he was initially diagnosed the vet said that yeah, cortisone can cause a cat's BG to go really high and I was like HUH?? Didn't think to tell me that before? I would have rather had him on the asthma inhaler. Maybe that would have caused it too? Don't know. But I guess that's a blessing in disguise, as without his diagnosis I wouldn't have stumbled across this forum and he would have been fed the same food... possibly causing a whole load of issues later. You all are Simba's angels here! :bighug:
 
There needs to be a new business that’s board certified to treat cats with diabetes. We could make a fortune. Vet’s don’t get enough training in nutrition just like human internists. So sad.
 
Max blocked when he was about 5 years and a vet pierced his bladder requiring life saving surgery. I nearly lost him. He was on Hills CD which I think caused him to gain weight and it was only when he got pancreatitis that my vet said he didn’t need the CD any more. He wasn’t obese but needed to lose about a pound. If he had continued on it longer he would have been. He only really liked the dry.

Lina, quick weight loss in an obese cat can lead to fatty liver. That was a huge drop. You dodged a bullet. Go slow with the weight loss.

That is so scary. I feel physically ill thinking I might have lost Simba. :( I'm sorry you had to experience it!

Currently weight loss isn't my main focus for him, I like the bit of chunk. ;) It can come off slowly without any crazy dieting.
 
Simba....this is interesting....I'm lurking to see what happens here.
My opinion means nothing much because I'm new and don't tell people to skip or not skip, but I'd be considering skipping if Simba were my cat. I don't have enough experience though.

Waiting here with you to see what Elise thinks.
