Dear, you need to pick up another box of chocolates for the vet office for Christmas

what’s wrong with the one I just bought?

upload_2024-12-17_16-35-19.jpeg

I ate it while staying up with Fluffy from +2 until +10…
In fact, buy three boxes

methos had a large flap of skin torn yesterday. I suspect Tammuz but their vet defended him saying I didn’t have proof. Rather than swab his paws for dna I just went to store and bought some cleansers she recommended: betadine, peroxide and hibiclens. I started w/ peroxide yesterday afternoon and night and this am but I don’t like it long term. I’m not a fan of betadine bc of the iodine and I worry about him licking—betadine always seems impossible to get off.

I went to the store today for the vetericin recommended by @JL and Chip. Last night @Wendy&Neko gave me instructions on how to use the hibiclens.

I tried a warm compress and then the vetericin gel spray this afternoon—I liked that it said it was ok to lick and would be a protective barrier. I don’t like the red edges he’s getting but I hope it is just wound healing. I’m hesitant to do all of the things at once. Does it sound reasonable to just do the vetericin first, and add the hibiclens if it gets worse? Or would you do both? The surgeon in me wants to throw everything I have at it except I do know too much screwing around d interferes with healing (hence not using peroxide anymore)—and this is a big open triangle. Luckily he doesn’t seem to want to lick it. Unfortunately he drags it on everything. I’m not experienced in treating cat wounds as they are indoor/catio/leash only cats and generally well behaved (the times Muz has hurt Methos it’s just been a swat that in a normal cat with fur wouldn’t even muss the fur…he doesn’t realize Methos is different now.

also, dreading +2 as I’ve nearly finished that box of chocolates and the night is still young

Also in Muz’ defense for two unrelated males who moved in with me at different times they get along remarkably well. It’s just Muz is a pest when he wants his ears cleaned and Methos gets tired these days and when he’s done, if Muz persists, he bites the ear. Then it’s Fights On. Generally I hear if a spat is brewing but not this time, so maybe Methos just caught himself on something. Still, it’s back to keeping them separate unless I’m there even for a minute.

I would stick with just the one treatment at a time. Do you think Methos would tolerate a body suit/harness/onsie/cat recovery suit or something like that to cover his wound? I remember fashion statements by a previous Cushing's kitty.

After last night's +2 you could have gone to sleep. Save those sleepless nights for when you really need it.

Thanks!

I have several T shirts and recovery suits. He is very unhappy in them and I think he’d roll around until he got it above his belly. But I will give it a try in the am. I’ll get a pic later today or in am when he’s laying on his side—between the ear pokes, extra feedings, etc and now the belly treatment he’s getting tired of being fussed over.

he’s surprised me too much for my guilt to let me sleep until at least +4, and the +8.5 I had to get up to give him an extra snack for ketones. So as long as I was up and he’d been running so high I made sure he wasn’t really really really high and his ketones ok so I could fall asleep again.

@Heike & BInie and I’ve discussed this—when they’re low we’re awake to keep them safe, when they’re high we lay awake and wonder what we need to do to help them. Ironically I’d told her I was going to try to let go of the stick so to speak, and try testing less and not tailoring food because I may need to be gone for 10 hours a day. That little experiment didn’t end well. I’m back to gripping the stick with both hands.

This was it yesterday. It’s got red edges now but I’m hoping that’s wound healing

So if any advisors are out there and want to weigh in here’s the deal: he ate about 45-50 cal at dinner of that 5 calories were pill pockets (68% iirc), 25-30 a 5% mousse, the rest 0%.
At +2 he got a 5% shred (most of the mousses and shreds are 0% so these are my “big guns” short of proplan (14%) 30 cal which really filled him up and another pill pocket.
In theory he’d come up (I’ve been repeatedly told) but at +3 he’s 111 —even with variation this isn’t holding steady let alone come up. And he’s not due for more food although I will try to get him to eat. However—
He doesn’t care for the 5% much even when hungry and he’s not hungry. He likes the 0% better esp the comfort sachet but that’s high fat so if he eats that he may really feel full.
If he doesn’t eat now I’d either give him a comfort sachet, or maybe mix a half tsp or tsp of the 14% (which he adores) into some zero or 5 percent to get him to eat (so it’s about 5-7% if I take off my shoes to do the math). I was told don’t do this but I don’t know what else I can do at this point.
I know you will see this after I’ve fed him —let’s hope it’s a 5% mousse so no one criticizes me but at any rate I’m open to suggestions. It’s hard to get a picky eater to eat a lot every hour. He needs the calories so I’m happy to stuff as much in him as possible but if I’m stuffing zero carb food he seems to keep dropping despite getting more calories to manage

Modeling his “chick magnet” t shirt. I think his expression says it all

Boy he’s a handsome dude. But he does not look happy in his chick magnet tee.
What we do for our sweet babies. It’s endless.
You rock Colleen.
I’m hoping that wound is healing and you get some advice on the carb situation.
Oh, and I do think the woman in the painting did eat 3 boxes of chocolates. To be fair, one day rolled into the next, so she easily lost track of her allotment for each day :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Well one *might* make it to the vet clinic. I bought a small box today bc I’ve been tempted to eat the big boxes in my pantry I need to deliver this week. I left the candy shop and looked inside (I don’t eat chocolates normally) and thought “wow those are large. I’ll eat a half of one a day this will last more than two weeks.” One was gone before I left the parking lot. I just ate the eight one. I already ate the entire tortilla. All that’s left is the cool whip out in the garage freezer.

Hi there. First I must tell you that you are hilarious. Love the writing style and the pics with customized captions.

I would very much like to know details of your food cache because you seem to have a full pantry of choices and Minner is super picky so it’s been a challenging transition to all wet LC food. I literally put out 4 cans of different FF classics pate each morning and night … to get her to eat maybe a total of 200-250 kcal (the other 500 or so kcal shamefully go in the garbage). She also eats an applaws tuna loin each morning post shot, part of a chicken fillet in evening post shot, and cat man doo freeze dried chicken pieces and FF select tuna and chicken treats after ear pricks. She would eat only treats if she could. Sigh. You mention a mousse and a 5% shred .. will you share what those are?

The Hartz bisque pouches are a questionable recommendation. A treat, not a nutritionally balanced food. I used to give her 1-2 a day before she transitioned to all LC wet food. I’ve never been able to get a solid answer on their carb percentage. The math based on the min/max percents on the package make them seem to be very low carb, under 5%. But tapioca starch is an ingredient and I’ve read that has high glycemic index. Depending on the flavor these pouches have 15-20kcal. Minner loves them, they have semi thick soupy consistency she enjoys lapping. They seem to help increase BG level temporarily, but not spikey. ECID.

About a month ago I received an amazon package addressed to me but containing a bunch of stuff I definitely did not order. And not things anyone would send me as a gift so it was for sure some weird amazon mislabel.

Anyway … one of the items was a small spray bottle of Silver Honey. A wound care spray that contains something to prevent licking. Strangely it showed up right when Minner had ripped off the last Libre we tried and her skin was a disaster so I seriously considered using it …. But the manuka honey ingredient caused me to pause. No big deal except she’s diabetic. Urgh. I tried to tell myself she wouldn’t get much honey if she licked b/c that ingredient is pretty far down the list and the spray also contains something to deter licking. Sharing here in case anyone has an opinion or in case you want to look into it ….

Hoping for some speedy healing !

Thank you! Got to laugh or we cry and get put on 72 hour hold, right?
My pantry is stuffed with Tiki cat. I’ve got to figure out how to post the nutrition info I got from them. If your kitty like soupy/gravy like things I suggest their mousses. Nearly all zero percent, their senior two options are 5 & 6 %. I like their aloha friends and Luau shredded options bc you open the can and see food like we eat. A few of those are higher like 5-6. There’s a 10–or maybe it was 9–tilapia and it’s coming from chewy. I had to order 12 so I hope he will eat it. Ocean whitefish is 9 but he wouldn’t eat that one. But he generally loves all the mousse options, that was Amy gateway drug to the rest. In fact I was feeding him Light mousse when his Cushing’s was first diagnosed, because it had fiber and was zero carbs and I feel like it helped stave off the diabetes but it’s got more fat than some of the others so I stopped when his pancreatic enzymes increased (although now we think that’s tumor not pancreatitis I’m too nervous to give him high fat).
You seem very well versed—more than I—about ingredients so if you see something worrisome let me know. I’ll try posting screen shots and if that doesn’t work will try another way

Some companies that sell through Amazon do that so they can fudge their customer numbers and perhaps improve their satisfaction score. Or so we heard in the news a few years ago

I’ll try this one first, the mousses. They actually have more mousses than these, two senior ones and a bunch of specialty ones (I’ve requested the specialty info bc he likes the “digestion” and “joint” ones

Ok that didn’t come though clearly enough. I didn’t think it would. I’m going to ask how to post some files and when I find out will make a new thread and tag you @MinnerPip ok?

Ahhhhh … tiki … yes, familiar. I have cats that will devour this kitty crack. I have no idea why Minner turns her nose up. She did initially eat the Aloha pouches, but that was short lived. It might be time to try again. Even with the FF classics pate, she gets tired of flavors, but then likes them again after not having for a short spell.

My biggest complaint is so much fish—I try to push the chicken but salmon is a big seller at meal time. His favorite is tuna and Chicken mousse…for his usual food. But it’s the carb heavy proplan he adores (well I can see that, who doesn’t like carbs)
When I’m semi forcing food on him he lays in bed like “oh I’m just too full and too tired. Bring it here, maybe I will have a small bite”. When I give in and bring on the proplan he’s like “really, I couldn’t eat another…say, is that wheat gluten and meat by products I smell???out of the way, woman, step aside, put it down put it down!!!!” As he dashes down the steps to the day bed and rushes to his eating spot

Sounds like a feast for tonight :):p

Welp 98 after being stuffed with low carb food all night. And he’s not really interested in even the proplan (gave two level tsp and he left some). It may be time for greenies and I’m seriously questioning my not using proplan sooner

That’s a really nice number. I’d try to hold off on greenies or anything terribly high carb unless he truly gets into riskier numbers. My concern is that the high carb triggers a whiplash into higher numbers, which are then stressful in a different way. He’s kind of coasting along right now … maybe rode it out a bit longer before reacting? Maybe?

btw, I loved the TV show House. :)

Greenies only if he didn’t come up since he’s now refusing all food including his beloved wheat gluten and meat by products after just a couple of bites.
Hopefully he’s hungry in an hour when the proplan wears off and he can eat the rest of his zero carb dinner and I can go to bed
Thanks for the vetericin tip—had time during his bounce this am to buy some (and a box of eight mint chocolates )—it said it makes a protective barrier so I hope it works.

there was an internist colleague, a civilian, at the pentagon who was like my Wilson (even looked somewhat similar). Just a nice, kind, smart guy. He and I often worked long after others left finishing charts and calling patients. One night after he’d finally left I went to his office to get a book he’d borrowed. He had a plaque that was the cover of a Top Docs in DC edition of a magazine or such and his name was listed.i cut a sticky with my name and covered his. A few days later i was in his office and noticed he’d written his name in tiny print on the sticky under mine.

The end of a long night 2.5 hours short of the next cycle. I normally fold up his heat pad, scrunch up against the back of the day bed and he climbs up to snuggle. When his back is to me he stretches perfectly from my groin to chin. He gets 2/3 of the width.

But last night, looking about as bad as I looked he instead, as I cleaned up the last of his dishes, plopped down so he took up 2/3 of the futon. My options, all of which I’ve done in the past:
—Squeeze my legs into the four inches between him and the back of the “sofa”—I worry I will roll over because I can’t tilt back so I squeeze my arm between the slats to keep up against back
—Sleep on floor between sofa and coffee table
—Curl up in the third of the futon he’s left for me.

went with #3 last night. Really sore neck this am. He looked at me this am like “yeah and my ears hurt woman, suck it up”

Well someone looks very cozy oh his day bed
Sorry you had to squeeze for a smidge of space, Colleen.

Ivy slept for 10 minutes at a time on the pillow next to my head on the sofa. Bushy tail in my face (yet I love when she Does that)
:p
What we won’t do for them ❤️❤️

Methos has a very long, very strong tail. I move it and he will flick it back with so much force it hurts. Then he looks at me like “what?”
