Boomer's BG level yesterday was 121. His levels seem to be slowly rising so I guess it's a good thing he's in for dental work today; hopefully that will bring them back down again. He's been on a diet for about 5 or 6 weeks now I think and I'm not sure he's lost an ounce but hopefully when they weigh him today they'll prove me wrong.

Meanwhile, I'm stressed because my baby is at the vet's. He knew something was up this morning even before we brought the carrier upstairs and he hid under the bed. Tried everything to get him out and ended up chasing him out with the broom which I really HATED doing because he is afraid of the broom (I think that back when he was an outdoors cat before he adopted us someone must have chased him with a broom) so I was in tears when I had to do it. :(

Could use some reassurance that this is the best thing for him and that he will be ok. nailbite_smile

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

Sending tons of hugs and prayers for both you and Boomer....it is SO hard on us beans when our babies are scared and don't know what's going on. Please keep us posted....

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

Sending prayers for Boomer and hugs to you. I hate it when they hide when we have to take them to the vet. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

((((Judy))))
It will all be OK! Sorry Boomer was stressed (and you, too), but if he needs a dental, he should have it. Hang in there! He'll be home this afternoon.
Hide the broom!

Adding prayers for Boomer.
Dentals are always helpful.

Try to breathe.... it should only be a few more hours......and he'll be so happy to come home.

The procedure should be happening around now. Oh how I hate this! nailbite_smile

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

Ditto on being a nervous wreck when the kitties are at the vet! Please drop us an update when you hear that Boomer is fine.

Remember, if there are extractions involved, you'll want bupe (buprenorphine) for pain management and you might want to get some baby food if Boomer's mouth is sore. (Stage 2 Gerber or Beechnut -- protein and broth with no veggies.)

{{{Judy}}}

It's hard to be the Mama sometimes when you have to do something you know will upset your baby. I'm sure Boomer has already forgotten it.

Sending lots of good dental vines. I'll be watching for your update.

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

My stress level couldn't take it anymore so I called the vet's office since it has been 6 hours since we dropped him off. And they're just doing the cleaning now. Poor Boomer it's been 8 hours since he's eaten and he's used to eating every 4 hours and he's been in a cage all this time. Not a happy mommy right now. Picking him up in a couple of hours.

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

Yes. I hate those later appointments...

I have learned to always schedule to be first for the day... or second....
and they don't have me come out until close to our time.....
then I stay until the moment the vet is ready to put her under....

They prefer it that way too because apparently if I'm not around, she's a beast to get out of the cage....even with sedation.

He should be done within an hour or so and you'll know it's over....
Sending hugs....

Well I had been told that they had another appt a 10:00 and he would be done after that. MAN

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

Hugs to you Judy - any time our kitties go under anesthesia it's stressful. :YMHUG: One of the advantages of going to a dental specialist is that they very seldom get other emergencies to disrupt the schedule. Paws crossed for a very smooth operation.

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

Boomer is home finally! He had two extractions but otherwise his teeth are in very good condition.
Thank you so much for your support today!
I hope everyone's babies are well out there in lantus-land!

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

Wonderful news! Did they give you bupe for the pain, and an AB as well? Heal up quickly, Boomer!!!

Re: 17/11 Boomer into vet for dental--mommy stressed!

They gave him an antibiotic shot and I have two daily doses of Metacam for pain.
He has even eaten a wee bit....just a wee bit....but at least he's showing an interest in food.

Judy:

Can you get something other than Metacam from your vet? It has an FDA black box warning due to it's causing renal failure in cats. I'm very surprised your vet is still prescribing it. Most of us will ask for/get buprenorphine for pain management.

Thanks for the info; I am emailing him right now. Boomer is not due for his pain meds until tomorrow afternoon so I have plenty of time to get something different.

i agree about avoiding the metacam. Bupe is effective and safer. When you give it, squirt it under his lips onto his gums or in the cheek pocket. The goal is to have it absorb through his mucous membranes, not to swallow it. It does absorb really fast.

So glad he's home. He'll be happier with the bad teeth gone, especially once they are healed. Keep an eye out for signs of infection - rising blood sugar, redness and infected-looking at the extraction sites. he won't want to eat in those areas for a couple of days, but if it continues longer then take a peek and see if it looks infected.
