Good morning everyone,

Angie is getting better and better (from her tail injury) but unfortunatly her bg numbers aren't looking good. I'm going to get the auto feeding bowls (as suggested by Rhiannon and others previously). I was trying to avoid another expense but have managed to find some second hand ones. Hopefully it's not too late and the late-cycle feeding will help to bring her bg back down again.

I also need to check if the homeopathic medicine could have an effect on her bg. I haven't given it to her since yesterday morning though. Would the effect still be showing?

I've been having a hard time getting tests from her since she hurt her tail. She doesn't want to sit in laps and is harder to keep still without accidentally touching her tail!

How often should I be doing ketone tests while she's on trial? I tried this morning and wasted 4 strips. I'll try again in an hour, when I do her next tests.

Recap from yesterday:
+6 --- 74
pmps - 155
+2 --- 115

today:
amps - 130

Yesterday's condo is here.

Courtney - you've sold Miami very well. I read your post to my partner and we both think it sounds like a great place to visit. I'm not interested in clubs either - the cultural diversity, good food, book festival and film festival are all much more my style! Although, with all those Central and South American cultures, I reckon there would be some good places to go salsa dancing (something I used to do a bit of but don't really any more).

Rhiannon - thanks for the tips. I'm going to try the auto feeders and separate the two cats at night time so that I know what each has eaten. I've been getting them used to sleeping separately just in case it would come to this. Jetzin doesn't like the separation when there's food involved. He's not that devoted to Angie; he's convinced that her food is better than his (grass is greener thing - they're the same). Hopefully it will work.

Have a lovely day everyone. I hope all the kitties find their surfboards (and that Angie finds her green one!).

Re: 16/3/13 Angie Trial Day 7 ambg=130 - ketone test frequen

i noticed angie received a shot of covenia a few days ago. i presume it was for an infection.
if her appetite is still "off", i would try getting a ketone test done everyday... if possible.

will angie let you slip a long-handled soup ladle under her when she pees? i use this method with alex, but not every cat will let you do that.

I don't have advice on ketones , just wanted to say Angie is beautiful, I have a soft spot for tortis cat_pet_icon

I do BG tests on my spare room bed kneeling next to it with her facing the other direction laying near the middle on the edge close to me. I do the back of the ear so mostly I'm just holding her ear, she hates being restrained so that was what worked best for us...I don't know if that position would help keep Angies tail safe? I hope she feels better soon :-D

Hi Jill, thanks for your help. It was for a possible (but now ruled out) UTI. She didn't actually have any UTI symptoms when I looked them up after coming home - she had a tail injury. I'm not going back to that vet any more because we've found a fantastic one. Her appetite is back to normal. I got a ketone test today - my blood glucose meter tests as well. Angie is very private in the LB and will run away if interrupted and not go at all. I don't want to mess with that! Her keytones are perfect - 0.1 mmol/L from a blood test.

In this situation is every three days ok? She's never had ketones.

Hi Raeifo,

I had really wanted a tabby cat but then we met Angie and she had a great personality and was going to be put down because she was too big to sell! She is a pretty girl, I agree.

I've worked out a method that she doesn't mind so much. I sit her on my lap with her head facing towards me and her legs and tail lying down towards my knees. She's happy with this as I'm not touching her tail any more. It was hurting enough to go into hiding but she didn't wince, yelp or show any sign of pain when I touched it (before we knew what was wrong). Poor girl.

Grace, I responded to you in a PM :-D

As far as ketones, I test K whenever I cat catch him. I keep his LB in the bathroom, and he really digs communal toileting  Sometimes on lazy days when he sleeps in until we get up, he will go to the bathroom with me for his morning pee and I will be able to catch a sample then. I keep a regular soup spoon and his keto-diastix strips (tests for glucose and ketones) in the bathroom so I can catch him whenever the opportunity presents itself. I usually only get one test a week, and he is always negative. When he was OTJ (he was dx last September and only spent two weeks on insulin before he went into remission for just shy of 6 months), I only ever tested him with the keto-diastix strips, and very rarely would get a blood test. I did try to test his urine more frequently during his remission, though, and would get 3-4 tests a weeks. I probably should have been testing his blood more frequently (I got 1-2 tests about every other week.)

If you're having a hard time catching urine samples, you can get a glucose meter that tests for ketones. Once Angie goes OTJ, you won't need to test as frequently, but I'd suggest periodic testing just to monitor her closely.

It was a urine test with the keto-diastix strips that alerted me to Kismet's elevated BGs in mid Feb when he came back from remission. I promptly followed the urine test with a blood test and saw that he was up in the 200s, so I scheduled a vet visit, waited 3 days, and started him back on insulin. If it weren't for the keto-diastix strips, I wouldn't have caught the recurrence as quickly as I did. I'd gotten a test a few days before, and he was negative. The polydipsia and polyuria hadn't started yet, and there were no other signs indicative diabetes when I caught him. Prevention is key when your kitty it OTJ. The earlier you catch a high BG, the better the chances are at going back to remission.
