may I have some information please.
I'm posting on this forum as I believe some questions I have might be relevant to any insulin but the one I'm using is Hypurin UK and we only have 2 people and 2 cats on it so there isn't much data.
First of all I'm not sure if my insulin is good to use longer than 28 days after first opening but it is stored properly in the fridge.
Another thing I noticed is my cat's BG goes up after AM shot even when I test at +4 or +5.
I can't figure out the onset, nadir and duration because it looks like not much is happening. For so many days he just stays flat and high.
My insulin is supposed to be very long lasting but I can't see duration. Of course I've read that ECIS so my cat can metabolise it quickly. But how do you figure that out if the numbers stay as they are?
I think I've read here everything I should about FD and ways of treating it but still feel very confused what these numbers mean.
I would prefer to understand that better otherwise it feels like I'm moving in circles without sense of direction.
I have 2 lovely members giving me dosing advice but I don't feel very comfortable to pester them all the time.
I'm not sure how to alert them at the moment so please @Elizabeth and Bertie and @Dr Schrodinger (Oh, I think I've done it! Yes?This is how you do it?) chime in if you have time. I know Eliz is having a bit of a difficult time at the moment so maybe Juliet would be able to give me some thoughts which I'll be most grateful for.
Best regards and for everybody and lots of cuddles for all the cats here contributing to better treatment of FD

Hi Marlena,
I'm wondering if Rocky dropped during the evening of 2nd Feb and is having a bit of a bounce..? But it's only a guess...

First of all I'm not sure if my insulin is good to use longer than 28 days after first opening but it is stored properly in the fridge.
I use my Hypurin to almost the last drop, and it has lasted more than 6 months in the fridge, remaining consistent throughout.
However, it does occasionally happen that someone gets a duff vial of insulin (of any type), albeit that this is a pretty rare occurrence.
Could the insulin have got warm at any point? Or has it been shaken a lot? Those things might shorten it's shelf life.
Are you rolling/tipping the insulin before drawing it into the syringe (I'm sure you are, but I'm just trying to rule things out! ;) )

Have you observed that Rocky's BG rises after certain foods? (Just wondering about a food intolerance?)
Might he have an infection rumbling around in the background?

How do Rocky's numbers on Hypurin compare with his numbers on Caninsulin? (Or were you not testing at that point?)

Eliz

Dear Eliz,
many thanks.
I think I handled insulin properly so it should be all right.
Rocky seems to go up with his glucose after meal every time, he gets the same food most of the time.
I'm not aware about allergies he can have, never noticed anything with fish. During his illness he was often sick when given cooked fish but not with raw fish. He used to vomit sometimes straight after food (his regular)but it looked more like he was ravenous and had eaten too fast and than vomit but would eat again directly after being sick and would be then fine.
Infection is a possibility so need to take him to the vet's, I think on Wednesday. We can try to treat his gum infection.
Taking all the culprits into consideration I still think that maybe his dose of insulin is too small. Today I'm trying a little higher dose, so far we see a better number, I'll keep testing and observe what happens.
Take care and try to rest and don't worry too much about Rocky as he is not too bad, we are coping and learning all the time and doing sensible things (I hope).
I know you've got so much going on at the moment, I'm thinking of you and sending you lots of hugs and kisses.
How are you doing today and how is your tortie girl - is she any better? I hope you're both much better today. Happy Valentine's day!

PS. I will have to look at the data I have on Caninsulin and post something about it another time.

Yikes, Marlena @Marlena , that is some bounce today!
Looks like Rocky might have dropped low last night. Does he seem OK...?
.
Hi Eliz,
Yes, looks like a bounce! I checkedhim (but not his BG) at night and he was acting absolutely normal so I didn't expect the very low number this AM! But at least we know that insulin is working!
Now, because I give a higher dose I will have to test at night and generally be very careful but I had to try higher dose to see what's happening!
Let's hope that everything will be all right.
Tomorrow we going to the vet's for check up.

He's an inpredictable little wotsit, isn't he? Keeping you on your toes, Marlena!
You're doing a brilliant job.
Good luck at the Vets today.

Juliet,
Rocky is definitely keeping me on my toes, little so and so!
Less insulin - he goes into higher number, more insulin he goes into higher number as well! Can't please him.
The vet said he is in much better condition since we started this insulin and he hasn't lost any weight since last time when he was on Caninsulin. He has some issues with his teeth but she wants him better regulated and then I think she will have to do some dental work (veneers or implants ha ha ha)! She said the dose of 0.6 or something like that I've given him once looks like a good dose but I'm not convinced.
When I looked at Milo's SS I remembered times when Rocky was on Caninsulin some time ago and I was a bit aggressive with dosing and even continued a small dose of insulin when he dropped to normal range for a week and we had remission after four weeks of treatment and it lasted six months. But his response to insulin was as expected so I don't know what's going on this time. When I look at his SS and other cats SS it looks like whichever way you go you get the same result (raised BG): you lower the dose you get red number, you up the dose you get red number. At least this is how it appears to me, maybe I'm reading it wrong or missing something. I had to try a higher dose to see what result we would get otherwise we will never know. At least I know that skinny 1u will bring him into blue numbers. The vet said to keep the dose for 5 - 7 days but what about trying different doses for different PS numbers? Difficult to say what his nadirs are.
Well, I can only try different approaches.

Dear Eliz,
I did not sleep much last night, as you can imagine. Was testing him a lot. In the end with his lowest number I gave some glucose and he was eating every half an hour. He seemed all right through MY ordeal! I stayed calm because I had my sister on Skype assisting me, she already experienced very low numbers and knew exactly what to do. The only think I noticed with Rocky was that he seemed to be in pain for a very short time and he was licking his hind leg. There is a possibility that he hurt himself when he jumped from kitchen countertop many times during the night getting excited about food. Otherwise he was acting quite normal, eating and purring, in the evening he had played a lot in the kitchen with a plastic top from the syringe!
What a night!
How are you doing and how are your furries?
I hope everything is OK.
