Hello everybody,

We live in Denmark, you may know it as the happiest country in the World :)
Unfortunately our 12 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes in July 2013. The not-so-short-story is that we suspected some hip problems since he licked almost all the hair of his left back leg.
The vet said that there was nothing wrong with his 'internals', probably some itching caused by an allergic reaction to lice. No lice was found but he said something about maybe 1 or 2 lice was there, even though we could not see them. This would cause his itch.
He gave him some kind of injection that would help, and it did. 3 weeks later all the symptoms of diabetes came within 2-3 days - drinking buckets of water and was very hungry, you all know the drill...
The vet said it was normal side effects to the injection, but 3 weeks after was a a little late. We should give it a week, and so we did. Blood tests then showed our worst fears had came true :( Not so happy anymore.
We got Caninsulin and diabetic dry food from Hill's. We gave him this untill this monday where we switched to Levemir. We started to read about the subject some weeks ago and found that he should switch to canned food with even lower carbs. We could then lower the dose and still got the 4-6mmol readings but sometimes also very high numbers, even above 30! We use mmol/L here, hope thats alright.
Sometimes he showed signs that he was producing insulin by himself, sometimes the opposite. At this point he had lost a lot of weight, he started on 7+ and now 5.9kg. He is a big cat and has always been overweight, so this is maybe closer to his ideal weight after all.
I then read about this Levemir and all the good things it could do for our cat. I managed to convince the vet to give us this, he likes to be 'cutting edge', has the newest laser operating gear and so on, so if this was 'the new thing' he was happy to write the subscribtion.

We had many questions when we started with Caninsulin, and we found the answers. Now that we have switched, new questions pop up... so the first question is:

Where do we show our BG readings so you all can help us analyze them, helping us in giving him the right amount of insulin?

Best regards
Gitte, Brian and 3D <--- that's one of the cat's names ;)

Hello and welcome to the board!

Levemir is a good insulin choice. What food are you feeding now? Is it low carb canned?

A spreadsheet is useful to track readings, and to allow us to help you - heres instructions http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207

Also his leg issues could be neuropathy - it gets better with good blood sugar but also you can try giving vitamin B12 in methlycobalamin form. You can get the pills at many health food stores - just make sure they dont have sugar or xylitol in them. Takes 4-6 weeks to show any results.

Let us know if you need help with the spreadsheet
