Thought I'd start a new condo as the other one was getting too long...

Day 5 and so far so good. Silver is in green numbers. He's still peeing outside the box and his legs still not good but other than that he is back to his old self again. Not raveneously hungry or drinking like its going out of style. He is doing all the 5 p's very well. He is even able to jump up on my (low) couch now - this is new.

Bought a new blanket FOR MYSELF. Wondered how long it would take for the cats to steal it. Just about long enough for me to get it out the bag and on the couch. Hmmmm...now you know why I buy blankets that are cat colored.

Re: 12/6 Silver the blanket stealer

What a gorgeous picture, Juliet! Silver has the loveliest face, and really soulful eyes. cat_pet_icon

Great news that he's getting more power back into his legs.

Re: 12/6 Silver the blanket stealer

Thanks Aine...yes he's gorgeous...but I think we ALL say that about our babies :-) He's now buried underneath the blanket so there's no way I'm getting it back!

Re: 12/6 Silver the blanket stealer

Thanks Aine...not sure how it happened. One day we are in pinks and reds with a smattering of green - next its all greeeeennnnn.

Nice to see every morning that's for sure.

Still having to remind him to use the litter tray. Tonight he went off to the corner to use the floor. I caught him so picked him up and plopped him in the tray which he immediately jumped out of and decided he didn't need to go. Five mins later - he went in the tray. Hmmmm, so he can get in no problem, he's just got into a bad habit.

Juliet and Silver

Go Silver! He is such a beautiful kitty, he reminds me of my Felix.

Stay green, Silver!

Litter box issues have come up before; would you like me to dig up one of the posts, or would you like to search for them?

Sure, I'll read anything you have. I've done all the usual things tho. I think he thinks it's ok to use the puppy pads now. It's not a case of not being able to get in, no change in litter, no smells on the floor...It's hit or miss. Sometimes in tray, sometimes on pads. It's like he thinks it's an extra place to go.

Congrats on the half way mark Juliet! Sure makes it easier going to work in the morning. :-D

He's a real cutie on the blanket. cat_pet_icon

how about picking up the pads and clean the floor with this fizzion. it gets all the smell out so they don't go back to the spot. if he thinks the pads are another place to go, maybe take them up now ? IDK. worth a try.

That's a great idea Nadine but I can't risk it. I have two layers of pads and an old towel underneath those so it doesn't get to the floor. It's not my house so I can't have any chance of pee getting on the hardwood floor or carpets. My landlord would evict me. Best I just hope he stops.

Thanks Wendy. Yes it's less hassle in the morning altho I'm still testing. Getting harder to get a drop now I'm not testing so much.

Thanks Voula...

Maybe try moving the pads closer and closer to the litter box and then maybe putting one of the pads IN the litter box? Just chucking ideas out. :?

OK -list compiled from other posts. Adjust gender as necessary.

Litterbox Avoidance

After you rule out any medical issues (infection, stones, etc) here is a list I compiled previously. Some of the items may not apply. Gender may be incorrect.

***********************************************************************

You might try an integrated approach using multiple options from the list below on a consistent basis:

* start with crating, using a medium large crate (30" long is big enough for cat and a litterbox) until progress. She probably won't go where she'd have to lie in it ... but if she does, something is wrong and it may be medical.

* tarps and newspapers may be easier on clean up if you don't crate her

* feeding on a schedule and then placing her in the litterbox (maybe in a crate) within 15-20 minutes after eating, until she goes, then praising and letting her out.

* Feliway/Comfort Zone - friendly facial pheromones which reduce stress and may reduce marking behavior. Cheapest prices are usually on the net (ex http://www.LambertVetSupply.com ) I've used it and it helps.

* Cat Attract litter - supposed to help attract cat to litter box

* rule out arthritis or constipation - pain causes box avoidance

* watch if the other cats ever attack her in the box and if so, you may need to keep her separated from them. I've got one the others attack, completely unprovoked.

* littebox should be 1.5 times length of cat, litter cleaned frequently, but avoid really strong smelling cleaners as cats may avoid them due to the scent.

* you've got to get residual odors out from areas which were 'nailed' - OutRight and Nature's Miracle are options and have good reviews. It _can_ require repeated applications of the product.

* regular play sessions of about 15 minutes to reduce stress and promote bond with you

* reward desirable behaviors - if you see her use the box, praise and treat her

* put unpleasant textures in places she has peed to encourage avoidance

* read some of this author's books: http://www.catbehaviorassociates.com/ she's pretty good - ex "Starting from Scratch"

Good luck.

Thanks....but these wont really work with my boy. I am in a tiny apartment. Don't have room for or $$ for a crate. He's already on a strict feeding schedule and he only uses the box when I am out the house or sleeping at night. I am not home to see if other cat attacks him when in the box - but in fact, its usually Silver who is the aggressive of the two. There are no smells in the corner where he goes as he doesn't go on the floor. The pads are removed along with any odor.

These ideas are all great but standard. Silver is most definitely not a standard kitty. He stopped using the box a year ago out of the blue. Then all of a sudden started using it again. No rhyme nor reason as to why. He knows where his box is, he uses it. And he also uses the puppy pads. I have four litter trays each with puppy pads underneath as my other cat tends to lean out the side. There is no answer to this....just wait for him to get the message to use the box again. If I were home all day, then this would be much easier to resolve.....as soon as I saw him aim to the corner on the floor, put him in the box. But I am not home so I have to content myself to cleaning up puppy pads for the foreseeable future.

A table with 4 legs and some inexpensive garden mesh fencing could improvise a crating area.

I'm trying to figure out how to fence off an area in my basement for the garage cats and think I may be able to use zip ties to fasten the mesh fencing to some tall ventilated shelving units that go up near the ceiling. Just need to figure out how I'm going to do a door so I can get in and do boxes or access stored stuff!

And unrelated to the cat issues, if your bed isn't too high off the floor already, they make bed risers that will lift the bed 4 - 6 inches and give you some storage space underneath for sweater boxes, etc. And a few bricks or cement blocks can do the same.

There's always a reason why, but I feel for you that you are away so long during your working days and don't have much opportunity to make the observations necessary to determine the cause of Silver's litter box avoidance behaviour. Tricky.

Thanks Aine....needs must tho. I have to go out to work and I work in the city.

BJM I have no room for a crate in my home. Tiny apartment.

If you have a table with 3 or 4 legs, you can improvise a temporary one for when you're not there to monitor.
Try to think outside of "can't".
