Good Snowy Morning, Everyone,

We have a winter storm warning. Lots of beautiful, fluffy snow. The whole cat is trying to help write the WCR at the moment. Don't know how far I'll get! We have another bounce (?) this morning, or maybe a reflection of a possible fur shot yesterday. I'm not sure the A.M. shot got in this morning, either. Even when I pull up on Rusty's fur, it's hard to see skin! Rusty had a good night. Ate all of the food put out for him and slept on the bed with us. This morning we had a good test (but Edward had to carry Rusty to the test site today) and a play with "Big Bug". But I think I have to be careful with this toy because Rusty (like Stu) likes to grab it with his teeth. And Rusty (unlike Stu) doesn't have many teeth left. I don't want the wire to irritate his gums.
So we have 2 votes for Rusty having some Norwegian Forest Cat ancestry, in addition to Maine Coon. (Sienne and MJ ). But Rusty ain't saying.
Back later, everyone have a good day,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138

Such nice reports for Rusty, Ella! I hope you three can keep warm today....sounds wintery up there! The snow sounds pretty...and cold...and I remember it well! Hope you have a great day! :YMHUG:

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138

Wegies' head shape is triangular which is what differentiates them from a Maine Coon. The latter are also typically bigger than wegies. You are probably going to want to get a really good comb for grooming. Both breeds have 2 types of coat. The undercoat sheds in the spring/summer when they don't need the bulk or warmth. I can't speak for the Maine Coons but Gizmo really doesn't mat -- or maybe he would if I didn't brush him regularly.

It really sounds like Rusty has decided he's home.

ella...since i've been laid up, caught an amazing show on PBS about the Adirondacks...now reading cpl books on the region.
i'm curious, without being too nosy...is Camp Stu near that area?

i'm a nut for history (okay...i'm a nut in general)...but really had little knowledge of the beauty and fascinating history and unique legislation in place there.

my aunt and uncle lived in Alfred, NY...and i have always regretted not visiting there...
looking for good numbers for you today, Mystery Background Guy! is okay...i'm not anxious for people to know my origins either...

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138

by boy is part Maine Coon, his fur mat if he's not brushed daily. I use a furmenator brush works great. To shoot, I shoot near the belly, it takes awhile to part the fur so I can see skin, you'll get it eventually.

Now stay warm and dry.

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138

That's not a bad AMPS, I'd vote for a bounce or just a little daily variation.

OK, here's a test for Rusty. God morgen, Rusty. Er du norsk? Jeg er også! Let's see what he says!

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138

Hi Celi, Alfred NY is in the far western part of the state, I believe. The Adirondack Park is in the northern part of the state. It is unique in that it is a crazy quilt encompassing villages, private land, state land (forest preserve). It is very large and the state lands are designated "forever wild", meaning that they cannot be commercially developed (this is a sore spot with those who want to "develop" and "provide jobs"). Camp Stu is on Indian Lake, in the central Adirondacks. It is seasonal for us (but, of course, the kitties can visit there any time they wish). We live in Saranac Lake village, near Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Here are some maps of the park. Have fun!:

Ann: Rusty didn't reply. Maybe it's my pronunciation!

Iorwen: Thanks! I'm sticking with it!

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138

Ha! they showed Saranac Lake Village! Was that you sticking your tongue out at the cameraman??

the camps they showed were amazing...the rockefellers, etc.

now i know where the kitty monikers come from...
STU-pendous, and Rustic...

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

We didn't name either one of them. They came with their names!! If I stuck out my tongue today, it would freeze. (Like Jean Sheppard's little brother's).

86 at +4. This is more representative of Rusty, I believe.

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

Are you using the longer needles? I had all sorts of issues with Kasha using short needles, unless her coat was shaved. Then it was ok, until it grew back in and it was worse than ever - lol... She had that incredibly thick undercoat - either Maine Coon or Wegie - she had some characteristics of both and I could never figure it which one she was more like. She had much shorter front legs - my friends used to call her "low-rider"...

I digress... But the long needles helped. And since they were thicker, I could feel them pierce the skin (skin I couldn't see) - but she didn't flinch or seem to mind.

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

Morning everyone! And nice +4 Rusty! And yes - can relate to all that fur. I have to make a part so I can see the skin, pull the fur up, then shoot. without a part - no way would I even be close....

You live in such a beautiful area - fabulous to think that you have a winter wonderland for several months. sweet!

Hey Rusty - the KTSS is going to see Luna today - she's at the vetty place, and well when she gets home we want to give her a spa treatment... ya know - all the vetty smell: yuck. You wanna come? ~~ Mannie

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

Hi Krys (nice to see you), and Michelle,
Thanks for the fur tips! Will definitely try the parting of the hair. Not so sure about the longer needles. I used to use them a long time ago on Stu, but the ones I have don't have 1/2 unit markings and aren't as nice and flat at the plunger tip as the Monojects I use now.
Hey Mannie, Yes, I would like to come with you to Toronto today. I love Ronnie. She helped me move and I sat in her lap in Linda Bear Man's car for the whole trip from Toronto to Kingston. I'd like to help her Luna get that vetty smell out of his fur. See you later.
Rusty (been to Canada twice!!)

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

Rusty! YAY! I thought you would want to come. And yes - I had forgotten that you know Canada. Yes! - you are in charge of navigation. See you soon! ~~ Mannie

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

Rusty, you are looking sooo good....must be the weather, eh? or is it all the undivided attention you are getting from your beans??? you've got them well trained   way to go Rusty!

have a good day you two!

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

Rusty's numbers are looking very good! I don't think you gave a fur shot this morning, either! I hope you get all the snow you want and no more. :-D

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

Hi Rusty,

Tell everyone that your ears are more Maine Coon than Norwegian. Do you remember Sorianna, Rusty? She
is all Wegie with the papers to prove it.

Hi Ella,

His numbers look great to me. Will he ever go to the Falls? I think not, although I had hopes two years ago when I first took him around Thanksgiving.

It was interesting to see Sorianna (Norwegian Forest Cat) who was adopted from the Philly area through this board and Rustin Rusty (Maine Coony) who was found wandering the street of Plymouth, MA side by side. They looked very similar. Take a look at the pictures of Rusty and Sorianna in the new FDMB calendar that just came out. I have some additional pictures of Rusty (and Sori) if you are interested.

Keep on enjoying this beautiful boy.

Claudia

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86

Probably more than you'd ever want to know about Coons and Wegies
My opinion was based mostly on the shape of his head and ear-set. I cannot, for instance, speak to the squareness of Rusty's rump...

excerpts from Cat Fanciers' Federation breed standards:

MAINE COON CAT
The Maine Coon is a working cat, muscular, solid, medium to large in size. This cat is a result of natural evolution. Males may be larger, females are usually smaller. Females should not be penalized because of this size difference. Allowance should be made for slow maturation, as a Maine Coon does not achieve ultimate type until three to four years of age. Type must not be sacrificed for size, or size for type.
Head: The head is medium in width and slightly longer than wide with a squareness to the muzzle. Allowance should be made for broadening in older males and studs. Cheek bones are high. Chin is firm and in line with the upper lip and nose. The nose is medium long, with a gentle concave curve, with no bump or break.
Ears: Ears are large, tall, tapering to a point, wide at the base, set high, no more than an ear’s width apart. Lynx tipping is desirable. Tufting (hair growing from inside the ear) should extend beyond the ears.
Allowance: A slightly wider ear set is allowed in older, mature males.
Eyes: Eyes are large and wide set with a slight oblique setting. Gold and/or green eyes are desired but not required. White cats may also be blue or odd-eyed (blue with gold or green). Clarity of eye color is desirable.
Body: The cat should be medium to large in size. Females are usually smaller and should not be penalized for size. The body should be long and with all parts proportioned to create a rectangular appearance. The neck is medium to long; it may be thick and muscular in older males. The body should feel solid with firm muscle and no flabbiness. When viewed from the rear, there should be a definite squareness to the rump.
Legs: The legs are well-muscled, medium in length, and in proportion to to body length.)
Feet: Paws are large, round and well-tufted underneath and between the toes.
Tail: The fur on the tail is long and flowing. The tail is wide at the base and gradually tapering.
Coat: The fur on the front shoulders is shorter and should become longer along the back towards the tail, ending in a shaggy heavy coat on the britches. The sides of the cat’s coat should gradually get longer until the stomach is reached, where it should be long and full. A full ruff is not expected; however, there should be a slight frontal ruff beginning at the base of the ears. The coat should have a fine but heavy texture, and should fall smoothly. The coat should have a lustrous sheen but should not be excessively oily or dull. A slight undercoat may be carried. This is the optimum coat and will vary with the climate. Cats should not be penalized for less than a full coat during the warm season nor shall they be penalized for a very full coat.

NORWEGIAN FOREST CAT
Head: Triangular shaped. Leaning toward, but not quite approaching an equilateral triangle (all three sides equal in length) from the outer base of the ear to the tip of the chin. The overall appearance should be as long as it is broad. The frontal skull is flat. The neck is medium to short with heavy musculature, not in proportion to the body. The nose is medium to long, straight from the top of the forehead to the tip of the nose with no break. Females may exhibit a minimal curvature but no break. Preference should be given to females with straight noses. The muzzle appears nearly square; this illusion is heightened by a well-developed chin the profile outline is more square than round, not sharply pointed, and with no evidence of snippiness, foxiness, or whisker pinch. Chin shall be firm with no malocclusions and shall be gently rounded in profile.
Ears: The ears are medium to large, slightly rounded at the tip, set as much on the side of the head as on the top of the head, upright, alert and arched forward as though listening. The ears are heavily tufted. Tip tufts are desirable but absence should not be considered a fault.
Eyes: Large, almond-shaped and expressive, set at a slight angle with the outer corner slightly higher than the inner corner. It should be noted that between the ages of 6 months to a year, the cat goes through a stage of development where the eyes appear almost round; this should change at the time of the first birthday. Green-gold eye color is the preferred color although shades of green and gold are accepted. White cats may be copper-eyed, blue eyed, or odd-eyed, in addition to shades of green and gold.
Body: The body is of moderate length, heavily boned, with a powerful appearance showing a full chest and considerable girth without being fat. Males should be large and imposing; females proportionately smaller than males. It should be noted that this breed is not fully mature until 5 years of age. The flank (fleshy areas) of the side between the ribs and the hips) has great depth causing considerable depth to the body when viewed from the side.
Legs: Legs are medium in length with the hind legs longer than the front legs making the rump higher than the shoulders. The thighs are heavily muscled with substantial lower legs. When viewed from the rear, the back legs are straight. The front feet appear to "toe out". The feet are large, round, firm and well tufted.
Tail: Long and flowing. The desirable length should be equal to the body length from the base of the tail to the shoulders.
Coat: A distinguishing double coat. When pressed down with the fingertips, an impression should be left in the coat. The outer coat is long and smooth, soft and not dry, with oily guard hairs covering the undercoat. The undercoat should be dense and cottony. The ruff consists of 3 separate sections: short back of the ruff, side muttonchops, and a full frontal bib. Allowance shall be made for less ruff and britches in younger cats under 2 years of age. The britches are full on the hind legs and the coat is uneven. Solid colors, tortoiseshells, and bi-colors have a smoother softer coat than tabbies, with a less dense undercoat. It should be noted that it takes about 2 years for the coat to come in completely on colors other than tabbies. The season of the year should be considered when judging these cats as the overall coat is shorter and the mutton chops and breast collar are lacking or are much shorter in the summer; during hot weather, the tail, ear and toe tufts distinguish the cat as a longhair. Maturity (approximately 2 years for judging purposes) must also be considered when judging these cats for coat. Cats living in temperate climates exhibit coats, which are softer and shorter than those spending time in cooler climates.

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86, +8 75

Nice numbers for Rusty. I tend to think he is more Maine Coon. I have had both. NFC tend to have very fluffy tails (Lance's was about 5 in. in diameter) and they carry them up. Coons and NFC's are vocal but not in the normal cat manner. Lance never said Mewo. He was talkative, sang and loved water. Tuffy will go into the shower with the water running, if I leave the door open. Tuffy (Maine Coon mix) is also vocal. They like to be near but Tuffy is not a lap cat. Lance liked to sit on me.

Whatever he is he is delightful and himself. I'm so glad you have him.

With Tuffy I pulled up her fur and skin and form a pouch and shot there. I tried the longer needles and shot through the tent so I went back to the short needles.

Good luck in time you will master it.

Have a good day. I'm freezing here in FL. 32 this a.m. at the barn, will warm up on Saturday. Totally forgot I have northern blood.

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86, +8 75

NIce +8 for Rusty. I tend to favor Maine Coon for Rusty. I have had both NFC and Maine Coons. NFC (Lance) had a very fluffy tail and carried it erect. He also had long feather or pantaloons. He was very vocal but not in a normal cat voice. Talked, sang, never said "meow" and had the wonderful almond eyes. Tuffy (Maine Coon mix) also has different vocalization then the other cats. Lance was quite large and Tuffy is large. I have a few large cats. Maybe I feed too much. NFC and Main Coon's can mature up to 5 years. Tuffy is not a lap cat. Lance would enjoy sitting on my lap. Both like or liked to be close and follow me. It is strange but they also both liked water. Tuffy will walk into the shower when it is running. Crazy kitty.

As for the shots, when I was shooting Tuffy I would pull up a tent, fur and skin and shoot. I tried the longer needles and shot through the tent so went back to the shorter needles.

IMHO no matter what Rusty is he is wonderful and liking his new home with you and Edward. Enjoy the nightly lullaby.

Enjoy your snow. I'm freezing here in FL. 32 at the barn this a.m. I can't believe I'm a northerner and freezing like this.

Have a great day.

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86, +8 75

I do the fur lift too and feel for the pouch with my finger after blowing some fur away (indented triangle area). I can feel when the needle goes in - I put it in the pouch all the way with a short needle and I don't think we've had a fur shot yet. With a long needle - we'd probably had a ton of furshots.

Re: 12/7 Rusty AMPS 138, +4 86, +8 75, PMPS 97

Good PMPS for Rusty and I think the shot went in. Thanks Barbara and Karrie for your "shot experiences". I'm going to stick with the short needles, too (no pun intended!!).
We printed out M.J.'s info on the breeds and both Edward and I lean toward Maine Coon as being the predominant one. Whatever, he's a beautiful kitty.
Everyone have a good evening. Rusty is heading to Toronto to help get the vetty smell off Luna.
Hey Ted, I'll see you at Luna's. Rusty

You could try wetting down the fur too. I just used a damp washcloth, and wiped down the area so the fur would stay put while I tented and poked. Of course, after Cosmo had an ultrasound and was shaved, there were no more problems. (can you ask a vet to shave a spot?)

He's doing so beautifully. You must be so so so very pleased.
