JuJu is doing really well. Eating like a horse and playing like a kitten. He has bitten Ava, twice, and myself, once, over the last week. He has always done a little play bite here and there but he actually drew blood a couple times. We're not overly concerned but definitely raised our antenna a bit.

Kiki has had a decreased appy over the last few days. She did better today. She has the 5 Ps covered, so I'm not really sure what the deal is. Both cats have had diarrhea for a couple days, as well. We got some more FortiFlora from the vet so hopefully that will do the trick. They also gave us some kind of pills for diarrhea. I'll have to get back to you all with the name of it.

Ava's back is better. She has been moving around fairly well. I'm picking up some daytime work, so I'm gonna be working close to 60hrs a week for the next week or two. The timing is actually great. It should help us get some of JuJu's critical care cost paid down.

I do have some unfortunate news. We received a call from Ava's sister earlier this week. JuJu's brother, Prince (formerly Butters), was diagnosed with diabetes and admitted to the hospital with DKA. It's really unthinkable that it would happen just a month after JuJu went through the same thing, crazy. He has vastly improved and the hope is he will be able to go home today. I've told Ava's sister, Adriane, all about the FDMB and how much everyone here has helped us. She has asked us a lot of questions and we have answered to the best of our ability. However, I've instructed her to post in the Feline Health board so that you all can get to know her and Prince. As well as, provide further and more detailed instructions as to what could be best for her situation. She would like to get Prince into remission ASAP, so I've told her about the LTR protocol. However, she has a very busy schedule, so I'm not sure she will be able to test enough for the LTR and "Relaxed" may be a better fit. I'll leave that up to the pros to decide. I'll post a link in this condo when she makes her intro post in Feline Health.

I hope you all enjoy a beautiful Sunday, fun day! Go Bucs!

Great to hear the report on Juju!

That is strange about his littermate. The one thing I would make sure she knows is that the sooner she gets him on insulin and tightly regulated, the better his chances of healing are. Damage occurs to the pancreas from high blood sugar and the sooner the high glucose is brought down, the better the chances of becoming diet-controlled are.

Not sure if you've seen, but since Juju went OTJ we have a new yellow starred sticky on the TR page. It's called "Can I do TR with a Full-Time Job? Yes!" and you can find it at the top of this page. It's a myth that people working full-time can't follow TR and that myth has just cropped up recently. Many, many people have full-time jobs and still manage their cat's BGs. There are ideas & suggestions on that post on how people have accomplished this.

That's so nice to hear that JuJu is doing well- though I hope that biting was just a one time incident? The only time my Tiger ever took a nip at me was when she had an injured foot and she was in tremendous pain. I am very curious, JuJu and Prince are only 5 years old? Did your vet say whether he is Type2 or Type 1? I was reading an article the other night, and typically kitties here are in their ummm, golden years.

I hope Prince can recover fully from the DKA and be treated here for his FD as well!

Ruth,

JuJu and Prince are approximately 5yrs and 9 months old. The doc never mentioned type 1 or 2 but I'm guessing since JuJu is in remission, he's type 2.

Sorry to read about Prince but hopefully he will be another lucky one like JuJu. I'm so glad JuJu is doing so well.

JuJu's brother, Prince, is on his way home. He still has ketones though, so I'm not sure why they sent him home. The doc told his CG, Ava's sister, Adriane, that he should be okay with a low ketone count. Are there extra steps she should be taking? She's going to continue testing for ketones at home.

He was in the hospital for 4 days. Should they have sent him home without being ketone neg?

Mikey didn't have DKA, but he did have trace ketones, and they sent him home. Do you know how high Prince's ketone level is?

That is surprising that the hospital would release Prince. As I understand it, flushing the system with water is helpful. Is your sister in law familiar with testing for ketones at home? It can be tricky to catch kitty at the litter box at first, if this is the case, she might think about investing in the meter that tests the blood for ketones and glucose- it's more expensive than urine test strips but I think more accurate and maybe easier if she can't catch Prince at the lb.

Mary, she said his ketone level is 2. I have no clue what that means...

Ruth, that's a great suggestion. I'll will let her know. I'm hoping she can find time to post in the Feline Health.

Glad to see JuJu is doing so well. I hope KiKi will be fine. The rest of the news from your house is also good! Sorry you have to work more but I know the vet bills weigh heavy.

You probably know this but Type 1 diabetics cannot go into remission so JuJu is not a Type 1 diabetic. What typically happens with Type 1 is that the pancreas can produce more beta cells but the autoimmune system destroys them.

I hope Prince can go into remission as well. Adriane needs to be sure and put lots of extra water in Prince's food. She needs to be sure he gets extra calories and if he becomes inappetant, she needs to get him right back to the vet. She also needs to be sure his insulin dose is correct.

We always love to hear updates on kitties at the Falls as well as their CGs! Please let us know if we can help Adriane and Prince.
