Yesterday's condo

Somehow ended up with a few drops of insulin on Websters fur last nights shot. Gave an extra 1/4u just in case.

I've only been dosing with the caliper for a couple days now and just found my first syringe that was off by at least .25u(if not more). I should have used one long ago.

Just to let you know, we highly don't recommend giving another shot or any extra insulin when you give a fur shot or smell some or see some insulin on the cats fur. You don't know how much did not get into the cat, and what you smelled or saw on the fur could have been some insulin that spilled out on the syringe as you were measuring the dose.

Those calipers took me about a week to get used to them, but they sure help to keep the dose more consistant.

Thanks Dayna. I was debating whether or not to give him extra. Next time I'll just let it go until the next shot.

With the extra insulin you gave last night, you may not see its effects until this cycle or the next, so I would highly suggest making sure you monitor him a bit more closely these next few cycles, just to see if that extra insulin is working a little extra magic. Also, if you have not updated your spreadsheet to show you gave the extra amount, I would do that. I would also indicate a possible partial fur shot. It just helps when interpreting your spreadsheet, if people notice an abnormality in his cycles, the extra notes will help explain that. Again, I haven't had time to check out your spreadsheet, so if you already have done it, awesome!

Fur shots happen. I have given my fair share. One of these days I am going to either have a t-shirt made with that or get out my craft supplies and make a poster or a sign with that on it lolol But like Dyana said, we really don't want to give an "extra" shots, as much as it sucks, its safer than wondering how much he ended up getting between the two shots.

I think many of us have done what you did with the fur shot followed by insulin at least once. The one time I did I knew he didn't get it but was quite nervous afterward. Since then I have suspected fur shots but some of them clearly weren't so I know it is best in the future to accept the fur shot and wait to see what happens. The worst that happens is that Webster will get a pokie break if the numbers stay high and you earn extra free time and possibly sleep.

Webster's been having some pretty high numbers here lately, even after adjusting his dose up.

From what I have learned here, it's possible that either his insulin depot is low after being on a 0.25u dose for several days, he doesn't have any carry over from the previous shot, his dose may still be too low, or the high numbers may be caused by a food spike from the new feeding schedule. Then there is of course the possibility of a bounce beginning. Lot's of possibilities here. Am I understanding this correctly?

The good news is that he doesn't appear to be dropping low at a fast rate. The bad news, well his numbers are high which is of course not good.

I guess I should just wait another 2 cycles to see what happens and adjust up once again after tomorrow night if his nadirs continue on the high side? Correct? Or.. should I first try to play with his feeding times. Perhaps cut his larger portion at PS from 2oz to 1.5or or maybe 1oz?

I don't know if I should wait it out and adjust the insulin in another day or begin by altering is feeding schedule.

or from a trip to the 'lowlands' that you didn't catch after PM+4 on 12/03

I would sit tight on the dose and the feeding for now and see where he ends up at AMPS. Increasing dose during a bounce is not recommended - it could result in unexpected lows once the bounce clears.

Please be vigilant about testing for ketones - with a recent history of DKA and Webster being unregulated he is at a higher risk for recurrence.

All Ps in place? Appetite normal?

Thank you Sandy. I hope to see him come down.

I try to catch him in the litter box about every other day or so.

Yes, the DKA really concerns me. I really don't want to see that come back.

All 5 P's in place. He seems to be his "normal" self.
