NOTE: Pumbaa's spreadsheet is in reverse order, with the most current data at the top. Under the units injected, there is (number), which is the cycle number at this dose. Cycle one, cycle two, etc. I got tired to trying to count because I frequently increase Pumbaa's doses at night.
Pumbaa was not doing well at the 2.75U dose. Some thought he was too low, some thought he was too high. I respect all opinions, and thank you for offering them, because I know these opinions were offered out of what worked for your cats and due to wanting to help me! (((HUGS))) But, what I do know is that, while I had tried decreasing Pumbaa's dose in the past to lower his numbers, nothing I had done had caused him to become regulated, and I had never (on Lantus or Levemir) had him up to 3.0U.
I'm so unhappy every minute he spends above 250, because I don't want him to suffer any more organ damage due to the high numbers. I don't know if it's too late for his pancreas to get the break it needs to start healing, but I pray that it's still an option.
Months ago (pretty soon after Pumbaa was diagnosed and I had started him on Lantus), I tried the TR protocol and was posting on the TR Lantus boards. He was bouncing so high and acting so poorly, it was stressing both of us out, much more so than we were able to deal with. So I dropped his dose from 1.50U to .5U and started the "start low go slow" approach again. Pumbaa was a huge bouncer/diver on Lantus, and he also HATED his shots. (Lantus is more acidic than Levemir, that is a fact.) Since I finally switched Pumbaa to Levemir on 9/24/12, Pumbaa no longer fights me at shot time, because the Levemir doesn't sting him. (Don't forget, ECID. Pumbaa was just more sensitive.) Pumbaa started out flatter on Levemir, and I was praying that he would stop all bouncing and diving. He flattened out initially, but is still swinging a lot on the Levemir. Just not as much as he used to swing on the Lantus.
That was just a brief history of Pumbaa on insulin, and what we've been going through. Tonight, I am very confident in my dose increase to 3.0U! It was inevitable to take him up here, and truly try to find his breakthrough dose. I'm still afraid that he's going to dive one night, and go hypo, because of his history on Lantus, but it does appear that on Levemir Pumbaa doesn't dive that way anymore.
