These blacks are breaking my heart. I tested her twice this morning and got a HI reading both times. How long before a dose reduction is deemed failed? New syringes may have thrown her dose off a bit too. Should I go back to .50 or wait it out a couple more cycles? I don't know what to do.

High numbers are really frustrating. I think you have to give the reduced dose a bit more time to work. With Start Low, Go Slow doses are typically held for a week and with Tight Regulation they are held for 3-5 days (I think.)

How is Kay doing otherwise? Is she eating normally?

She's acting and feeling better than she has in months (she's currently snuggling with me under the covers :)). Her appetite is also better than ever. She may be 18, but she's always acted half her age. She only started to slow down a few months ago (sleeping a lot, not playing/exploring as much - I chalked it up to old age) but she's back to sleeping normal hours, exploring, socializing and being my velcro cat. :)

I'm glad to hear that she's feeling well! As long as she's eating, drinking, and acting normally, I wouldn't worry about her temporarily being in high numbers.

Any chance you're monitoring for ketones? If not, you may consider picking up some Ketostix at a local pharmacy and testing her urine. The presence of ketones (above trace amounts) can be a warning sign of diabetic ketoacidosis (More info here.) Testing for ketones when Kay's high might provide you more assurance that she's safe even if her numbers aren't great.

When I first took Saoirse to the vets because something was seriously wrong, she was given a Dx of "old lady / stress". I had to take her back again a couple of weeks later to insist she be tested for diabetes. I wish the vet in question could see her now (we moved to another practice nearer home shortly after initial Dx). The change to a species-appropriate, low carb, wet diet has done wonders. Our current vet was gobsmacked at the difference it has made to Saoirse - she looks years younger now. I'm so glad that Kay is feeling and acting better, too. Fingers and paws crossed that her numbers will start to improve along with her clinical signs - and very soon.

hang in there Mel. i KNOW how frustrating the high numbers are. my boy just failed his dose reduction so i'm creeping him back up slowly but it was sad. we'll make it though Mel. just keep on going slow and steady.
