Quick update on Cairo for anyone interested and/or following (ok, it's not really that quick). I posted all of this on FB since I'm on there a lot (might be an addict (LOL!) but wanted to keep everyone updated.
I took Cairo in to have her teeth cleaned on Wednesday, Dec.3rd. The vet said she did really well. She had 6 teeth removed (and 2 fell out a month or so before the cleaning) so, girlfriend is down total of 8 teeth.
I asked the vet to call me as soon as she starting coming out of the anesthesia so I could come and sit with her. The vet tech brought her in to me and I sat and held her in a waiting room for about an hour (ish) before she started coming around. The tech said he wished more people would do that. When animals are coming out of the anesthesia they are disoriented, scared and really need a familiar smell, sound and touch to make them feel more comfortable (just like people). I held her close to me with my cheek next to her head and talked softly to her and petted her. She really seemed to liked it.
I brought her home around 3 in the afternoon. She was feeling uncomfortable, disoriented and confused. I put her in her favorite sleeping spot and she slept the rest of the day. I tried to feed her in the evening but she didn't want to eat. She sniffed the food and acted like she wanted to eat but wouldn't. She pawed a lot at the stitches in her mouth and drooled yucky, bloody, slimy stuff out of the side of her mouth. (Talked to the Doc. the next day and she said it was normal).
The next morning I was worried about her not eating for 24 hours so I broke out the FF gravy. She did eat a lot of it but at that point I just wanted to make sure she was eating something so her liver wouldn't shut down (and I had to go to work--darn job gets in the way of everything
LOL! When I checked on her at lunch, she had thrown the FF gravy up. I gave her more pain meds and fed her FF classic. She would only eat it off of the spoon -- what a princess! But, I felt better knowing that she was eating -- and, her regular food no less! Each day she is improving a little bit more. She didn't want her pain meds this morning so I only got in about 1/2 of them. I gave the other 1/2 about 4 hours later but she didn't really want it then either. I might see how she does without any meds today.
I haven't checked her BG since she's been home but I will check it today or tomorrow and see how it is. I also haven't tried looking in her mouth yet...poor girl! I know the dental was for the best but feel really bad for her.
