Today's Holiday Video is several years old: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPrNGU7nRDU

And the weather today for Cleveland:
... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST
Tuesday...

A lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST
Tuesday.

Lake effect snow showers will continue today. Locally heavy
snowfall with near zero visibilities can be expected at times.
Snowfall rates could approach two inches per hour with the heavier
bands. Rapid changes in driving conditions and visibility should
be expected. Use extreme caution if traveling overnight and
Monday.

So, Purring, preening, and presents....no playing this morning, but lots of snuggle time. Well, actually we had playing at about 5:30am for my wake-up call. Both Atlas and MudCat had their "play mice" in a game of toss.

I won't be home most of the morning as I do have several new clients to Meet & Greet for getting into my Holiday schedule. Doing lots and lots of cats...but no dogs on my pet sitting list yet?

PS. Can someone recommend a good dematting comb for Atlas. All summer his long hair coat maintained itself, but this heavy winter coat has him matted up on his back. It seemed like it developed overnight? I know it didn't, but seemed like it. He won't even let me touch it too much with the comb and slicker brush. I have to call in an order to the Mutt Hutt for his food, I'll ask Pam if she has a recommendation too.

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210

I don't have any recommendations but I will be seeing what others recommend.

With Maverick he can't get to his back at all. Even brushing doesn't prevent the mats and it gets a bit oily back there. So I keep his hair trimmed from his tail up to his lower back. It isn't the prettiest as he's a long haired cat, but I bet it feels better than mats do. He hates being brushed there too - he must be sore from the arthritis.

Good morning guys! Sounds like you got a lot of snow headed your way today ... be careful! This is a nice low yellow start to the day day, hoping atlas comes down nice and slow for you ... my parents use the defurminator on their kitty who mats easily near his tail area ... hope you guys have a great day!

Just checked the defurminator out online. Seems like it would be good if the mats weren't there already. It may be a follow-up grooming item.

Attie is very grumbly and hissy about being touched back there right now. I may need to take him in to the vet....hmmm...

I know when they get matted close to the skin ...they actually hurt. So I am looking more for a dematting rake I think.

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP!

Well, I've got to be out the door for an appointment ....

Fed, 1 tsp. Karo topped rabbit. Call me chicken...should be back at about +5...

Cross your fingers...

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP!

the Shed Ender worked for Binks when he had what i called "tufties" especially butt-tufties...thick manx undercoat that tugged when i tried to comb him.

the cat one worked on Homie's silky fur BUT i had to get the dog one for Binks...his fur was too thick for the finer kitty comb at that time...

it's an "as seen on tv" item...so any dept store/drug store carries them...

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP!

Nice weather report for Cleveland!! Snow is falling here in the Adiorndacks, too, but it's just snow, not lake-effect snow.

I find that Rusty is sensitive when I brush him, too. Phoebe sent along a de-matter with him, but apparently he does not like being de-matted, so I'm not about to try doing it now!! I'm going to stick with the brush and comb (Rusty's comb looks like a rake, with the teeth quite far apart. It's made by Four Paws.)

Pretty steep drop for Attie. But he'll enjoy his carbs while you're out!

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP!

You might consider purchasing a modest clipper kit so you can shave down areas to a manageable length.

I tried a little battery operated trimmer on my civvie, fluff job, Precious. It isn't powerful enough for long fur, and Precious has fur like roll cotton - mats quickly and thoroughly, so the trimmer wasn't helpful.

I had her shaved down after she had a dental, since she was already pretty groggy from anesthesia. At 3 months later, it is just starting to be long enough for regular comb outs.

I use a rake for routine grooming. It is basically a wide tooth comb and it is long enough to go down to the skin in long fur. Plus, the teeth are wide enough apart that there isn't too much pulling. She loves it.

There are some tricks to using a dematter, which actually cuts through the mats.
Always keep your fingers between the skin and the dematter blades.
Hold the mat firmly with your fingers, so any pulling is not transferred to the skin.
Start at the outermost edge of the mat and work your way inward.
If necessary, use scissors to cut the mat into strips and work each strip separately.
Use treats to encourage the cat to allow you to work on the mat.
A seam ripper can be helpful to break up a mat too.

Blue,
Did you really have to give our weather forecast! I have been trying not to look outside! lol

Cute video

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP!

Having lived in Cleveland many years ago, I remember those lake effect snows. It's not a fond memory.

I tend to think that given the drop at +2, erring on the side of safety and leaving out MC food made very good sense.

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP!

I think it was a good idea to give the karo topped rabbit too, given that +2.

I use a dog comb on Tinkles for regular grooming. When he was very matted, I cut the mats out with scissors....very carefully, with my fingers between the scissors and his skin. He would never let me near him with my clippers...he is afraid of them. Mats can be very painful to get out, if it hurts him to have you work on them, I would cut them out or clip the area instead. I would NOT use a dematter on a cat...if it's that bad, cut the mats out...it's much easier on the cat!

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP! +4 311

Well had a fabulous Meet & greet!!! Went super smoothly and the gal has already recommended me to 3 other people and after actually meeting face to face and getting the low down, on how my pet sitting business is different than the rest....she is more excited than I am....LOL.

Attie ...whew....learning, learning, learning...although he may still come down as the karo wears off or he bounced....311. Swung by home here to check on him as the smooth meeting gave me an extra half hour!!!

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP!

Wow, and very nice numbers this morning for Atlas. and I think a good judgment call on the fuds. Go Atlas!, but not too low, your bean is busy today.

I've enjoyed the discussion on dematting - I have the same problem with Mannie.

fun video- and oh my on the weather! stay safe and warm today.

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127 OOOP!, +4 311

Oh yeah... before I head back out...

THANKS EVERYONE for the support on my Karo pancakes this morning. See you all in about +7 or 8!

Note he didn't want his +4 meal.

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127, +4 311, +9 408

Ok, this looks like a bounce to me...and not so much a left over Karo IHOP trip.

So, lets think this through again. This was the 2nd cycle at the new dose. Unfortunately for Atlas he has a nailbite_smile bean for a Mom and with the steep drop & work, we did our own version of a glucose dump. Two hours later we had pink number and it looks like we didn't get a shift back down, but road things out for the day in the pinks...and now rising into the reds.

So my Karodump didn't stop his panicky liver dump anyway. But let's see if tonight the bounce is shorter-lived. If so then what will I have learned? :?:

We know Attie bounces from steep drops, not just low numbers. Steep drops for Attie is about 45-50 points or more per hour.

Attie Meets the Safari Mat Rake

Ok, so I talked with the groomer at Style Mutt. She says because he is acting too touchy about that area, the skin is tender. So work on the mat for short periods of time each day. I'm not going to get it out in one attempt.

First go in with a pair of scissors and carefully cut into the mat horizontally with the fur growth. Of course careful to not snip the skin. She said to even leave up to a quarter inch away from the skin is good, since the mat is tight up against his skin. This breaks up and loosens the mat. If he is OK with this activity try using the Safari Mat rake.

The rake is used in going with the direction of the hair coat growth. The blades are razor sharp to cut through the hair. If it snags in the mat STOP, don't pull it through as that causes discomfort. Just lift the rake out and stroke again. The rake should be cutting the hair, not yanking it out.

Well, Attie let me cut with the scissors into the mat(s). I did trim the hair in that area so I could really see what I was doing. There's lots of oil and dander build up there too. Poor boy. He didn't seem to mind the gentle snipping.

I tried several times to use the rake and it took a little to get the hang of it, but I think I got it. Much to Attie's dismay  . It started lifting out some of the mat, before Attie complained with a swat and a nip. Up until then he had been purring seeming a little annoyed, yet...kinda liking it. He then did a headbutt as if to say sorry for the temper tantrum.

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127, +4 311, +9 408, PMps 365

Ok Attie,

C'mon on down nice and easy. WE have a special plus one on the dinner menu this evening, followed by a very nice plus two, and a wonderful plus four dessert.

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps 210, +2 127, +4 311, +9 408, PMps 365

nice on the mat removal. I really need to work more diligently on Mannie. He use to love to be brushed - not any more - it's like world war 3, and I am not the victor.

Very nice on your meet and greets - YAY!

Karo pancakes   well phrased. I hope Attie clears the bounce well - and enjoys the dinner selections this evening.

Hey Attie!! Snowboarding at your place tonight? You got Lights and everything? YAY!!! we are off to Attie's... Anybody need a ride? This is so COOL! Night snowboarding! ~~ Mannie

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps PMps 365, +2 218

Ok, so there's our plus two. Bounce up and then cleared?

:?: Still is that a steep drop? Is even something like this going to cause a bounce for the morning? That's about 75 points an hour. He did eat the plus one menu and plus two is being served now. Full onset is around +3 and +4...Guess we'll go snowboarding tonight for a bit.

"Hey Mannie, Yeah...bring the gang! Mom says it's not too cold tonight and we got lots of Lake Effect Snow! Bring your boards...WhoooHooo!" ~~Attie"

Well, ....I guess that answers that question...plus 3 is 325

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps PMps 365, +2 218, +3 325

I'm thinking that the +1 1.0oz is a good plan. I think you need to feed more food early in the cycle to slow him down.

It will take some experimentation to figure out what works best for Attie...and it will take some time to see the full effect, it's not overnight (I wish it was though!)

Hang in there, Beth.

Re: 12/6 Atlas Amps PMps 365, +2 218, +3 325, +4 302

Looks like he is coming back down from his race to 218. Well it is plus 4 feeding time so hopefully he'll mellow out for the evening.

Well MudCat is all excited she spotted Gary the Garage cat is back and he brought the winter lodge with him. So the lodge is set-up with heat and straw to warm-up from the cold. The entrance is only big enough for kittycats too. Sorry no beans inside! ~~Attie

So MudCat, Gary, and Attie are not waiting for everyone else. The hill is calling and the fresh salmon appetizers are on the lodge roof!
