? 12/5- Freckles - AMPS 236 - frequent swallowing

Freckles continues to stay primarily yellow despite increase to 3.25 u yesterday but I noticed this morning that she is frequently swallowing. It's almost similar to what a human does when they have a sore throat. Freckles had similar symptoms when she got diagnosed with diabetes at the end of September 2019. Her blood work showed elevated WBC at that time and she was put on antibiotics for 10 days. Back in September the swallowing effort was more noticeable as her head would jut forward when she swallowed, but that vet wasn't able to tell me what was going on. After the antibiotics, the swallowing returned to normal.

I'm wondering if she has an infection again and if so what is causing it? If she does have an infection, I'm thinking this could be contributing to the 'insulin resistance' that we are seeing? If she does have an infection and goes on antibiotics I'm thinking her reaction to the insulin may change once the infection clears up, but I don't really know what to expect or proceed.

I have an appointment with the vet for tomorrow (Friday Dec. 6).

Anyone else experience their kitty with similar symptoms?

Thanks in advance!

I'm glad you have a vet appointment tomorrow. If she does have an infection that could contribute to higher numbers. Once it is cleared up her numbers could come down some.

I would definitely get your vet to take a look at Freckles' teeth. How is your kitty's appetite?
From what I can tell, her teeth look fine but I definitely want another opinion as she doesn't hold her mouth open very long. Freckle's appetite continues to be voracious. It doesn't appear that she's having problems swallowing while she's eating, it's more when she is just sitting there relaxed that I noticed a different sound when she swallows. She's not holding her head any different when she is eating or any other time.

Special vet vines for adorable Freckles. Judy, I love seeing her face -- I hope you can get an answer or good idea tomorrow. Kiss that cute little black smudge by her nose. You might even get more ideas here; I haven't ever seen what you are describing.

Vetty vines :bighug:

It could be nausea. If nothing is apparent with the teeth, you might try slippery elm bark to see if it will sooth the mouth and throat and coat the GI track. If you need instructions on how to prepare it just ask, several here have or do use it.

I have not ever seen it before either except with Freckles. When it happened this past fall I initially thought it may be thyroid or a growth of some sort, but once she was on antibiotics it cleared up -- could have been a coincidence as well. Never know what cards these cats are holding in their paws!

Two possibilities:
  • acid reflux
  • Tonsillitis
I mention the latter because that happened with my civvie, Tobey. I had noticed he did it and then he just happened to go in for a dental and they saw his tonsils were inflamed. They gave him clindamycin and it resolved. However, there’s no way to dx it if they aren’t already doing a dental or other procedure where they are anesthetized.

Hmmm. Interesting. Thanks Marje! Today and last night there was no sign of Freckles doing the swallowing thing anymore but I will still discuss with the vet. Thanks for all of the info!.
