Good afternoon! I know how those new people feel trying to find information you just know is there among all that other stuff...please help my dislocated brain. I need to find the information on handling kidney disease in diabetic....got nasty results with Dakota's bloodwork at vet today but I already suspected something. It's early but looks like that road is ahead of us. I'm attaching the bw panel...

Right now vet wanted to put him on Epakitin but I see it has lactose in it - what is another like med without sugar?

THANK YOU and HUGS! We're STILL dancing! :)

Re: 12/5 Dakota - CKD info please

Tess has been late Stage 2/ Early Stage 3 for 3 years. Other than the regular blood checks which we do anyway, the only thing I've changed is to go with low Phosphorus food as well as low carb. I've got a tab on Tess's SS w/ foods culled from Dr. Lisa's list, I try to stay under 200mg phos / 100 kcal of food. That would be less than 1% Dry Matter as used on the Tanya's site. There are a few newer one that I haven't gotten on, some of the Dave's, Solid Gold (in the bright blue can), Wild Calling! Tanya's site has a list, but it is in Dry Matter numbers, so everything needs to be converted to Metabolized energy to be relavent to Dr. Lisa's list.

Tanya's site is the best information around on handling CKD. Here's what the site has to say about Epakitin.

((((Lyresa &Dakota))))) Sorry to hear you have gotten this diagnosis, we got our diagnosis earlier this summer and so far, we are in the earliest stages so the only change has been food choices. Tanya's website is an excellent resource, don't read it all at once, it will scare you at first until you realize that this can be managed. Marje can help you to add a tab to your SS for labwork and she is fabulous at deciphering labwork as well!

Well ohmygod_smile on the CKD. Zener too had early CKD, and we were not able to get him to eat the lowest phos fuds, but we did manage to get him off the worst ones. The info on Tanya's page is awesome. We also ordered the paperback version as we found it more handy at times. Marie is a wealth of info, her Gussie had CKD.

As Ruth said, I can send you a copy of a tab to add to his SS and you can enter the labs. I can't really read them and, by entering them, it helps you have one place where they are and you can easily see trends.

Epakitin can be used for toxin-binding or phosphorus control; howver, it would not be started for P control until the phosphorus is over 5. The bigger problem I see with giving Epakitin is CKD cats can be prone to increased calcium levels which come with a whole slew of other problems. Not all CKD cats' calcium levels rise or become problematic; but it's best to not take an action which can contribute to a potential problem.

A better option for addressing the toxins and potentially decreasing the creat/BUN is Azodyl. It's a probiotic. I've used it and have not had any luck with it lowering creat/BUN; but it's worked well for some cats and in other cats, while it didn't decrease values, it helped the kitty feel better.

Please PM me if you need help with the labs. I'm always happy to help decipher them and point you to applicable places on Tanya's.
