Yesterday's Frustration Rant

Thinking of Chris today, mourning her dear drooler, Peaches. What a horrible phone call that must have been. Many prayers and hugs headed her way. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I am still awaiting word from Dr. B (Harvey's IM) about his pancreatitis tests, as well as the copy of the discharge instructions they were going to e-mail me. I also have not heard from Dr. D (Cinco's UCD vet) about his bloodwork and the prescription she was going to send me. :YMSIGH: Seems my life is one big wait.

Cinco is surfing blue today. He has been really, really hungry. I had to grab him a little while ago because he found Harvey's plate and had a bite of Z/D before I got to him! Very high in carbs - not good! It seems that every cat in the house likes the Z/D except the one for whom it was intended! I offered Sasha a little this morning and she ate every speck! It's nice that she and Minka like it, since it is formulated for cats with tummy issues and food sensitivities, and I have eleven more cans of it! Harvey will eat the dry, but after that first meal (when he hadn't eaten in 18 hours), he hasn't been interested in the moist. If I can't get him to eat some by dinner, I'm going to try mixing his regular food with it and see if I can transition him. I know they want me to feed the Z/D exclusively to determine if it's working, but if he's not eating it, it's no good. If I can transition him to it, we can start the trial once he's on to it 100%. At least, that's my theory. I'll let you know how well that works!

All this running back and forth to UCD has put me way behind. I haven't even started making candy yet, and we leave two weeks from tomorrow for Ohio! :o I gotta get going.

Speaking of Christmas. I had planned to board Cinco, Minka and Sasha with Dawn, and leave Harvey at home, with Kathy coming every other day to replenish the feeder, scoop the boxes and give him love (she would stay overnight each time). However, now I'm wondering if I will need to board him, too? The only meds he's on now are Pepcid and Azodyl, and I suppose missing them a few times will not be the end of the world. I have to weigh the benefits of his getting the meds every day against how miserable I know he would be in a cage for 10 days. Even a large, comfy "condo" cage. Of course, if he were at Dawn's she'd be able to monitor his eating and make sure he wasn't getting worse again. Any thoughts? I haven't called Dawn yet to find out if she can accommodate one more. I need to do that ASAP, I'm sure, so I'd better decide today.

Sorry I haven't done much visiting. I will try to squeeze some in tonight.

Sending healing vines to all in need and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG: Prayers continue for Amy's DF, Lyresa's DF, Lisa's DF and Elise's DM. {{{Chris}}}

No advice on the home or board dilemma. You know your kids; you'll figure out what's best. (How's that for passing the buck.)

Still tons of light...powerful light...high, high voltage light for you and your babies.

For you, too.

Which choice would give you the most peace of mind while you're gone? Knowing someone is there with him all the time (even if a bit more stressed) or less stress for him, but maybe more for you??

I think you can probably answer that question easier.

Looking good Cinco! Nice to see you and China spending some time together and NOT out in the deep water!

Thank you for your support on the loss of my dear drooler. Not sure how it's going to be when I go home tomorrow to all her things still in the house, knowing she's never coming home again. I've offered my son her crate but he can't get it until sometime next week. He's got 3 dogs and only 1 crate and it's about to fall apart, so I know he needs it.

China knows something's up...she's glued to me every time I'm here...but I'm happy for her company

I hope you hear back from the vet soon. Waiting is always so hard. Good luck with your decision about boarding Harvey and getting him transitioned to the new fuds.

Nice blues for Cinco today. I'm glad Sasha ate. I hope Minka is doing okay.s

Sending prayers and hugs. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Cinco is really looking good today- that's a nice slide down! :-D We are sending continuing prayers and vines for healing and appetite and general comfort!! The prescription food you are describing sounds like Purina's EN, for gastroenteritis upsets? Tiger actually liled it(naturally) but it was chicken and rice at least it did not seem to make her BG skyrocket that badly for the week she was on it. That's funny that Cinco liked it too. I hope you get some answers soon- waiting is not fun, especially test results. I hope you were able to get the script for Lantus pens.

I'm continuing to send prayers for all your kitties. I hope you get good reports on them and soon. Waiting is so difficult. Nice to see Cinco in safe numbers so at least you had one less thing to worry about.

Re: 12/5 Cinco AMPS 248 +4.5 132 +6 129

Nice, easy day for Cinco!!

I think you'll get a better feel for what to do for Harvey for Christmas once it gets closer. How often does he get Pepcid at this point? For Trix, that one is really important now...any time I tried to cut her back, she would backslide. So if you're going to be gone for 10 days and if he REALLY needs the Pepcid daily, I would strongly consider boarding him. But, since Christmas is still a few weeks away, I would take this time to analyze how he's doing overall, and make the final decision once the date is closer.

I hope you're have a relaxing evening....you have more than earned it!

No worries on the condos, you have your plate full! Does your vet do boarding? W/ all that is going on w/ your kitties that might be an option.

No word yet on when I need to come up north.

What candy are you making? YUM!!!!!

(((Tricia)))

I'm sorry I didn't get by yesterday to lend some support but you got some very good info and advice. One thing I will add is from Tilly's Webpage:
Be aware that experimental studies in human diabetics over the last 15-20 have rejected the existence of the Somogyi effect (sometimes also called rebound). In cats, no studies have ever been done which properly demonstrate that such a phenomenon exists. Therefore, adjust the dose as described above, focusing on the nadir: don't do so-called rebound checks, as they only lead to unnecessary (and unhealthy!) hyperglycemia.

I also found it very interesting that "Somogyi" was misspelled on the discharge papers  How can they expect someone to believe they understand it if they can't even properly spell it? The common point that I find most vets tend to overlook is that Somogyi, if it does exist, occurs as the result of a chronic overdose. I wish you the best of luck in addressing this with the IM vet. I felt their discharge papers really underlined their lack of understadning of FD.

I hope everyone continues to eat something tonight. You've got a lot on your plate...i bet your family in OH will understand.

Re: 12/5 Cinco PMPS 219 +3.5 97 +5 65

Thank you so much for the visits and the support and info, Marilyn, {{{Chris}}}, Carla, Ruth, Elise, Amy, Ann, and Marje.

Cinco decided tonight was a good night for a swim, so I guess I should panic because he is Hypoglycemic! :o   Oh, wait. He isn't. Silly me. Wrong meter. Still no e-mail or call from UCD. Guess I'll have to call them on Monday. Good thing this vial of insulin appears to still be good!

Mark and I went out to dinner with a friend right after t/f/s. I had two glasses of wine and a yummy prime rib dinner. I feel much better. :-D

The student that saw Harvey yesterday called this afternoon to say that his Specfpl showed a slight indication of pancreatitis, but they think it is more just the influence of whatever is going on in his intestines. She agreed that I should try to transition Harvey to the z/d, and call them on Monday to let them know if we're successful. If not, they will give me a referral to the nutritional department, where they will come up with a custom recipe for homemade food that will take both the possible IBD and the kidney disease into consideration. Still waiting for a surgery date.

I fed Harvey a combo of 20% z/d and 80% Weruva Splash Dance tonight and he ate it all! :-D Minka cleaned hers up and wanted more, so I offered her some z/d, and she ate about half of what I gave her. Then Harvey came over and polished off the rest! Just now I gave him a snack of z/d with the sauce from Merrick Thanksgiving Dinner on it, and he ate it all. Paws crossed - this might work (anti-jinx!). He's sneezing a little more so I gave him a Zyrtec this morning. I'm getting ready to do his pills now. Wish me luck.

You would never know that Minka has just had Chemo (anti-jinx). She's eating well and being her normal sweet self. We give her the fluids on the living room sofa, snuggled next to her daddybean. She doesn't mind at all! :-D

Sasha is still requiring some crumbled Hypo treats to clean her plate, but she eats the first half by itself and then polishes the rest off with the garnish. Meal time is getting a little less stressful overall.

Ruth, z/d is designed for kitties that have food sensitivities. It's super high in carbs, like 40%, so it's a no-no for Cinco.

Amy, I've been giving Harvey Pepcid every night. He hasn't barfed clear liquid in over a week now (anti-jinx). The IM said I could continue it "as needed".

Ann, I used to board my kitties at the local vet, which supposedly has 24 hour care, but was VERY unhappy with them. They shot a 50 one morning and didn't test Cinco again until PMPS! :o  The woman I board them with now, Dawn, is a registered vet tech who used to work at UCD and started her own business boarding special needs animals. She's WONDERFUL. She has a bunch of the doctors at UCD on speed dial (they board their pets with her, too). I just didn't want to board Harvey because he would be in a "condo" or large cage, and he doesn't like to even be confined to one room! The lady that comes to my house, Kathy, works as a kennel supervisor at a vet's office in Sac and has known and loved my kitties all their lives. She comes from Sac and normally stays at our house every night (and commutes to work), but she wants to be with her family at Christmas so she's only going to come every other night to check on Harvey. We've done that before and it's worked out fine, although it was before Harvey had issues. Right now, we are leaning toward continuing with that plan, as long as Harvey continues to eat and do well. I will talk to Dawn about changing the plan at the last minute.

I make several kinds of home made candy every Christmas, mostly from my grandmother's recipes: peppermint bark, rocky road, almond bark (in dark, milk and white chocolate), cashew bark ( also dark, milk and white chocolate), pecan turtles, English toffee, bourbon balls and a small batch of peanut brittle just for my sister (it doesn't set up well here in the humidity, but by the time it gets to Ohio it's fine). I give the candy as gifts to our friends at bowling, an elderly neighbor, the lady that cared for my grandmother in the last 10 years of her life, the staff at my vet's office in Sacramento, my hairstylist, Mark's office buddies and our family members. I plan to add the UCD Oncology people to that list this year. Ann, if you time it right, I might have some to share with you! ;-)

Marje, thanks for that additional info. I will add that to what I've already compiled and take it with me when/if I meet with an IM at UCD. I really like the idea of making a packet for that student to review! I wonder if I could do it in a tactful way? Hmmm.

Nice to see the eating is improving it sounds like for all of them. It must be so hard trying to decide what to do wile you are away. You know your kitties and will make the right decisions. I'm sure of that one! Did they give you a number for that fPL? Just curious how slightly it was elevated.
