Yesterday Jetta 12/3
Good Sunday Morning LLers!

Sunny start for Jetta today- much better than yesterday's red start. I wonder if the bounce is clearing? Yesterday was pink and yellow as far as the eye could see, so I'm hoping for her to pull out a few of the others colors we like so well today. :-D  Sending warm wishes today to all ailing kitties and beans.

Next Saturday DH and I are leaving for vacation. We go away every year for our anniversary, normally it's 2 weeks island hopping in the caribbean, but I refuse to leave Jetta that this year (and Jetta spent 90% of our vacation fund...). So anyway, we rented an adorable little cottage in Key West for a week and Jetta gets to go with us!! It should be about a 6 hour drive, but we hear it may be MUCH longer due to it being a mostly 2-lane road that's easily snarled by one tiny accident. Jetta moved from OH to FL a few years ago, so I know how to do that part of it, but I just didn't know if there were other considerations I'm not thinking of due to her FD. I am getting a paper script for both insulin and syringes in case I'd need them there in an emergency, I printed out all the Vets down there and have her medical records in her bag. We'll take a cooler with her insulin and of course all the hypo kit stuff. In the car, she'll be in a big dog crate with a litterbox and a bed. Do I need to stop to test her along the way? What about food and water? She doesn't tend to get carsick, so I had planned to shoot and feed at AM as normal before we headed out. And, just in case, I'll also give her some Pepcid. Is that a sound plan or no? I'm sure I'm missing something, and I know many of you have travelled with your FD kitties, so I welcome any pearls of wisdom!

Have a great day!

Re: 12/4 JETTA AMPS 290 roadtrip with Jetta question

I'd send a PM to Ella/Rusty. Ella and Edward take Rusty from their home in the Adirondacks to NYC fairly often and she seems to have the car travel down to a science.

Re: 12/4 JETTA AMPS 290 roadtrip with Jetta question

We haven't travelled much with our cats, except to the vet so they hate the car. Would it be helpful to ride around with Jetta in the car a few times before you go? That might also just add to her stress now and not be all that helpful during the trip. I would probably test a couple of times during the trip, just to make sure she's ok. Sounds like a bunch of fun! I've never been to Key West and would like to go. Hope Jetta comes down this morning. Have a good one!
Liz

Re: 12/4 JETTA AMPS 290 +2 149 roadtrip with Jetta question

I think you have it pretty much covered, is she stressed in the car? You might try Feliway and or Rescue remedy.

I'd probably get at least one test during that 6 hours depending on where the numbers are. Some cats react to stress w/ low numbers. I often sit in the back seat w/ Tess and have actually tested her while DH is still driving. Once we stop she gets more excited and wants to get OUT!!!!! cat(2)_steam

There are also pocket size coolers to keep the insulin in that need just cold water to activate.

Have fun!

Re: 12/4 JETTA AMPS 290 +2 149 roadtrip with Jetta question

No advice as far as car travel with FD. I would bet Ella has some great points for that!

I do have have loads of experience with "the road" you are talking about. I've spent the past 20 years going to Islamorada which is about halfway to Key West....Just don't travel the peak times...like going down on a Friday night and leaving on a Sunday night. They have widened the road over the past few years and a lot of what you have heard has been addressed. It's a beautiful trip and I always feel like I've left the country when I go. Just don't need a passport!

As a lover of cats Key West is very cool....they love cats! Heminway's home is worth a visit....loads of multi toed kitties with wonderful names...and the house isn't bad either :-D

Enjoy!!!

Re: 12/4 JETTA AMPS 290 +2 149 roadtrip with Jetta question

Nice drop for Jetta!

We've never traveled with Weezer, so I'm clueless, but you've obviously put alot of thought into it. I hope the three of you have a great anniversary trip!

Re: 12/4 JETTA AMPS 290 +2 149 roadtrip with Jetta question

Hi Jaclyn & Jetta,

Sounds like a great vacation. Our trip to NYC takes about 6 hours. All our cats have always traveled free in the car (we put the back seats down in our small suv and put the litterbox in the very back), but I know that many cats do better if they are in a large crate. If that is what Jetta is used to, that's what you should do. We feed and shoot normally on the day of the trip. Rusty tends to get carsick during the first 20 minutes or so, so we have newspaper down, as well as puppy pee pads. If he vomits, we can just tear that section of the newspaper off (or roll up the pee pad and discard at the next rest stop). We always have a supply of garbage bags, paper towels, water and a washcloth, hand wipes (for ourselves, not Rusty). Rusty doesn't usually eat during a trip (Stu always ate), but we always have his food and water ready to set out when we make a rest stop. I carry--in a small cooler (a different cooler from the one in which the insulin is)-- a small dish, with lid, of his wet food; we also cary a bowl for water and one of the cardboard trays that cases of catfood come in (we use this as a "placemat" to put the food and water on when we stop). Usually we sit in the car and eat something at rest stops, so that we are there for a little while and if Rusty wants to eat, he can. We never test during a trip, but test when we get there.

Other tips: a collar or tag with Jetta's name and contact numbers written on it, as well as the fact that she is diabetic;
Make sure that you wrap the insulin well to insulate it from the cold blocks in the cooler. I wrap it in bubble wrap (or a neoprene sleeve) and then put it into a small cardboard box. Additionally, I wrap the little box in a layer of newspaper or paper bags. I have a small thermometer (the kind that you buy as a zipper-pull at the sports shops) that I put into the box with the insulin, just so I know.

Patty (Merlin) wrote a great essay on traveling and camping with diabetic cats. It's a Google Doc. Here's the URL:

Have a lovely vacation. If you have any questions, send me a PM.

Ella & Rusty

ETA- :o :o  :o Totally shocked at that +4. I wonder if that's a rising # or falling. I so did NOT see that coming.

Thanks Sienne, looks like Ella beat me to it!

Hi Liz, thanks, we're excited! We've got an enclosed patio, so Jetta may get to try out her own picnics!

Hi Ann- Jetta does OK in the car, aside from the wailing at first   She settles down as soon as she realizes she's not going to the vet.

Thanks Patsy- the Hemingway house is on our Must see list. I'll be in heaven with 50+ cats running around there. I was surprised how many rentals accomodated pets. Seems like a really cat/pet friendly place overall! I'm eager to see the road. I've lived in FL most of my life and have never driven it.

Thanks Linda! I think Jetta's as excited about it as we are- a week away from her pesky siblings!!!

Wow, Ella, thanks for such great info!! I hadn't thought about a collar and tag but when I read that I was like ohmygoodness YES that's a must. Also a great tip about the thermometer! We're actually take a large cooler with refrigerated food (cheaper to bring than to buy on island!) so it shouldn't get too cold, but it's safer for us to know for sure. And thanks for the link! It looks like Merlin had quite a number of amazing adventures!!!

sounds like a great trip I wish we could travel with Do Lou but he does not travel well and with his blindness he does seem more comfortable at home with my DS taking care of him

Wow on that 53

Re: 12/4 JETTA AMPS 290 +2 149 +4 53

There's that sky diving kitty we all know so well :-D Jetta, do you always have to be so dramatic about it?

Your upcoming vacation sounds lovely, wish i could drive for 6 hours and be somewhere hot! I'm sure Jetta will love her vacation as well and be on her best car ride behavior.

Does anyone think this is shed action? If so, how long might it take for the shed to drain that extra .25U?
