I don’t know how everyone does this. With being fairly new and changing his dose and changing around his food, both hubby and I were concerned with how it is going to affect his numbers. Worried we would be asleep if he dived low we took turns last night being awake. I took over at 3am. His numbers were low for him but at turnover of the shift, hubby told me he hadn’t responded to automatic feeder for his kibble yet. Totally out of character for Tiger. I stayed awake until +10 (6am) and he still hadn’t eaten it. Never thought to pull it up as it could affect his amps. Of course he ate it after that. To make matters worse, I got up and fed him completely forgetting to take a reading. I remembered after he ate about a spoonful of 0 carb food. So, I snatched him up and took a reading. I know he was ok to shoot as the libre shows it went way up at 7am (295 up to 439 in that hour) and I can assume that’s when he ate the kibble. I felt terrible once I was awake enough to realize the mistakes I made. Still a bit groggy writing this, so I hope it makes sense, lol.

I will monitor him closely today . I don’t know how everyone goes without sleep and is able to manage making decisions while half asleep. No one told me about the guilt old groggy parents feel!! I’m too old for this, lol.

Happy New Years everyone.

Hi Deb, it gets easier. The beginning is the worst because there’s so much to learn. You will find your rhythm to a degree. And it’s great you have your husband’s help. A huge bonus to be a team.

I use an Auto feeder overnight to give snacks and set the last compartment to open 2 hours before amps, this any leftover food slides away (while you are hopefully still sleeping).

Are you using the Libre 2 or 3?
The Libre 3 has an alarm which goes off (on the app on your phone, connected to the sensor Libre Linkup account) if they drop below a certain number, so you would hear that alert and wake up. Mine is set to 69 so it starts beeping. So that may give you peace of mind.

They also say it takes 15-20 minutes for the food eaten to hit their system ( I think that time is right), so you tested quickly to get a valid reading.

Hope this helps ease your mind a little bit. Happy New Year!

Well…there has been a saying here going around as far as I remember that sleep is overrated :p. To a certain extent it goes back to the information I shared about getting a feel for how the insulin and carbs are affecting your cat and as you gather data about where you cat typically onsets and nadirs, that helps a great deal. Last night Tiger started coming down at +2 and then a little more into nadir by around +7 although by +5 he had really just started flattening out, so I wouldn’t have been concerned that he would be up to any shenanigans.

Remember nadirs are the lowest point in the cycle, so at that point numbers will gradually trend back up as the dose effects wane. There are some cycles where if I was hitting greens by +4 or +5 and I wasn’t sure if I had hit nadir, so I’d doze off and get +6 to see if still flat. Or sometimes you can set an alarm for a later test. In those cases where I felt another test was needed, I also drank a big glass of water before I went to bed so that I’d be sure to get up ;).

I know the beginning has to the hardest, I just hope I don’t make a mistake before that time that hurts him.
One thing I definitely saw was how his mid-night (3am) snack affects the bg.
The auto feeder is set for 3am so as not to interfere with amps and he usually eats it immediately, but not last night.
I hope it was just an anomaly or I will have to rethink and maybe switch to LC kibble. Still testing the LC Dr. Kelsey’s to see how it is on his tummy. Did you mean your feeder closes if not eaten?
We have the Libre freestyle, no alarm. Asked the tech yesterday about the libre 3 but he said that he had never seen them used. Are the sensors the same look and size?

I do see what you are telling me as for his nadir etc. the trouble is, like you said, information gathered. Trouble is we are still gathering that and have no idea as to when he is at nadir from past experience. Nervous cause I don’t know what shenanigans he can pull!
As for the water, we’ll just say I don’t need any added incentives at my age! LOL

thank you both for all this info, it really does help so much. So nice to know we are not alone with this.
Going for more coffee…

There are definitely signs of improvement, no blacks as well. You’ve been at this for less than a month of collecting data, but don’t worry there isn’t a quiz ;). It takes some time to be able to read things, and there is a lot of information to get your head around in the beginning. Sometimes I forget what it was like to be new , just keep on asking if/when you have any questions.
