? 12/31 Question: Rubber Stopper Came Out Of Lantus Vial

Hi everyone,
My cat Boo has been on 1.5 units of Lantus 2x a day the past week. (Newly diagnosed) She just had a check up today to see how she was doing and all was well. She has another appointment two weeks from now for a recheck/bloodwork, etc This evening upon removing the vial from the fridge the black rubber stopper in the bottom slid out. Half the of the insulin was lost. We managed to push it back in and there is enough to get through the holiday weekend. My question is will it still be safe to administer until Tuesday? There are no streaks and liquid looks clear. It was sitting inside a plastic prescription bottle. No leakage inside. It only came apart as we were trying to give her evening dose. It is a weird bottle. To be clear I'm not talking about the silicone top where you inject the needle. This is a rubber plug in the bottom of a glass vial. Any ideas?

I’ve never seen that happen. If it’s sterile it should be fine. Post an intro on main/health and set up a spreadsheet and signature. Ask there as well. You should get a refund. You might want to get a box of pens instead of another vial.

Oh no, I'm so sorry about that bottle of Lantus, and it's so expensive :banghead:

I never had that happen but I'm bumping your post up for more experienced eyes and I pray you get a good answer.

Is it the manufacturer’s original bottle or did the vet (or whomever) put the insulin in a different container? You might post a photo if possible.

I believe it is the manufacturers original bottle as it was in a sealed singular blister pack (plastic casing with foil backing...kind of like how pills are sealed on sheets) when I got it.

Ok I found a picture online of what the vial type looks like. (see attachment) I'm too afraid to start messing with the one I currently have for pictures since we taped the bottom to prevent the rubber stopper from moving.

Waving from the Kawarthas.

This has never happened to me either though I did end up with a cracked vial once (the vet dropped it and did not check before giving it to me).

Yes, I would contact the vet or pharmacy (wherever you got the vial). Ask them to contact the drug company as well. People need to know if there is a defective product out there. Any chance someone in your household was playing with the vial?

Do you just have the one vial? In Canada, humans need a prescription for insulin but pets do not. You can get a 5-pack (like your photo) for roughly $110 which should last about a year. If you need to get another vial, just tell the pharmacist that it is for your diabetic cat. I believe some Shoppers locations are open tomorrow.
