12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105 ...

... because her peeing and pooping outside the box has gotten really bad.

Tonight I got home after being gone for 9 hrs*, made sure the cats had food and got my dinner. Half way through it I started to smell poop, so I went to check. Cami had pooped on the rug in the guest bedroom. While I was cleaning it up I noticed a dark spot and found she had peed there as well. Then I flipped over the rug and there were two more urine stains. I got the floor under the rug cleaned and left it to dry and finish my dinner. About a half hour later, Cami walked out to the living room and squatted on the rug there. I yelled at her and shooed her away and then picked her up and put her in a pan, she growled at me and jumped out so I put her in a different one, she wouldn't stay there either. Back in the LR, she had peed enough to soak one small spot so I had to clean that up. And it had been weeks since she peed in the living room.

I have a LB right in front of my closet door in my bedroom that I practically fall over every time I come into the room. It's in front of the area she was peeing on in that room in an attempt to "head her off". She seems to have stopped peeing on that rug - at least for over 24 hrs - just moved to a different room. Two days ago she peed on a chair.

What the h*ll am I going to do with her? She is already on prozac.

I would take her to the vet. Has she had her thyroid checked? Something has caused this to start happening all of a sudden. Thats just me if it were my cat and they started peeing and pooing outside of the litterbox.
Also check for urinary infection?

Re: 12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105

She had her thyroid checked in Nov. and it was at the low end - so it isn't that. Her renal values were ok, so not renal insufficiency. She had similar symptoms in July when she was dx with FD and they did a C&S that was negative. It isn't her BGs as they are under control (75-140). She was like this when I first got her, so I think it is stress. I just don't know what else I can do to make her feel less stressed. Certainly having my mother here was big stressor, but she has been gone for 4 days and Cami is getting worse. Everything was fine before the arrival of my mother. No outside the box episodes is a couple of weeks - although she almost peed in the LR last week. I was able to pick her up and put her in a LB and she peed there. She knows she is doing something wrong because she growls at me when I stop her and move her.

I wish I could tell her that she won't get a better home than here. I won't give up on her or try to rehome her - she just wouldn't bounce back from that, but I may have to shut her in a bathroom or crate her if I can't find a solution. I hate to do that because it will make any socializing with me or the other cats impossible and I think it will make Cami a nasty cat, but I can't have her peeing all over my home.

I feel so sorry for you and her. It is hard to tell what has happened to her previously. You were only trying to be kind and take her in. I hope that she calms and starts using the litterbox again.
She must get stressed really easily. I don`t know if maybe you might think about using a AC like Dawn Allen if you believe that might help. I know some people believe in that sort of thing and others don`t. It would sure be interesting to know what she (Cami) is thinking and why she is doing what she is doing.
You could also have the AC tell her that she is in a very good home where she is being taken good care of and that she is safe.

Re: 12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105

We had one session with Dawn already. Hard to cover everything in one 30 min session, but the gist seemed to be that Cami liked it here except she felt the testing was a hassle, and she didn't mind the other kitties. She felt "stiff", but ok otherwise. But it was a few days later that Cami vomited up that plant object, so I don't know.

I just heard a cat peeing and jumped up to see who/where and it was Cami in the LB (yay!), but when she got out she was nauseated and retched a couple of times without producing anything. I have seen that happen after a BM 2-3 times since I got her, but not after peeing. She has huge BMs and a lot of gas still. She has had her belly checked by three vets with physical exam and xray and there are no findings. Not even "thickened and ropy" that is often found with IBD. No lumps or masses seen or felt. I just wonder if there is something else going on that only time will unveil - like cancer, unfortunately. She did have slightly elevated calcium levels in July and that can indicate lymphoma somewhere or just be idiopathic. I had a cat with those same lab findings and about 8 months later she finally had symptoms of lymphoma (nasal).

My Arthur was doing the same thing, throwing up after using the litterbo,, BM and peeing. I took him to the vet, xrays, bloodtests, the whole nine yards. they could find nothing wrong with him through those tests and said it could be Lymphoma or IBD. The told me to give him 1/2 Pepcid once a day, in the evening since he usually would throw up in the morning. It has really helped, not as many incidents.
They told me the only way to diagnose IBD or Lymphoma was a biopsy which I said I am not putting a 15 year old cat through.
You might want to try the pepcid. Arthur is not however diabetic. I do think you can give Cami pepcid but please ask the others to make sure. I saw that object that she threw up awhile back and whew how baffling what that thing was. Wondering if there might be more where that came from. Did you ever identify that?
I am glad to hear she did go the the LB finally.

Re: 12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105

Yes, giving her pepcid would not hurt her. I have been watching her for signs of pancreatitis, but she does not have any of the classic signs like meatloafing or not eating. The vomiting is pretty infrequent since the "thing" came up. Before that it was about 2-3X a week, not it is once every 2 weeks, except she has done it twice in the past week.

I also wonder if there is "more where that came from", but as long as it is plant based stuff it won't show up on an xray and exploratory surgery is the only option for finding something. I'm not going to put her through that at this point.

I am starting B12 shots this afternoon for both her and Beau to help with digestive health. I filled the script a week ago, but I have not been home and did not want to give the shot for the first time and walk out the door or go st sleep for 8 hours. I am sure it will be fine, but I just feel better knowing I will be here for at least 24 hrs after and awake for the first 8 hrs. I guess maybe I should wait until Weds am just in case - don't want a holiday emergency.

Re: 12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105

I used to take Lilly in for B-12 shots, she was the kitty that looked like Beau, my diabetic that passed. It did help her but I could not afford it anymore.
Yes the pepcid has helped Arthur so much, he was throwing up about once a week and knock on wood, have not had any incidents for awhile. It sure would not hurt to try.
No I would not risk any shots until after the holiday, thats would be how it goes you end up in the ER and it so expensive. Hopefully once you get started she will feel better.

Re: 12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105

I got my vet to write a script for the B12 and it is costing me $10 a month for both of them. I got instructions from her AND the pharmacist on how to convert the dosage for a u100 insulin syringe so I don't even have to get syringes.

But I just picked up Cami's fluoxetine (prozac) at the same pharmacy and it was a fortune! That's going to half to change. I can get 30 tabs online for $3 plus $6 shipping. This just cost me $30 for 30! I don't remember it costing that much before so I have to go back in after the holiday and talk to one of the regular pharmacists and see why it was so much.

Interestingly, right after I posted my last post, I needed to go to the store, but though about putting a pee pad in the lid of a big plastic container - flat on the ground, easy for her to get into. I showed it to her and let her watch me as I put it in the front bathroom. She came in and looked at me like I was a little nuts so I patted her and she started purring and "asked me with her eyes" to be put on my lap. We sat there with her purring for nearly 20 mins. That is the longest ever.

(ugh. One of my 5 yr olds is at the water dish for the third time today. She had a steroid shot on Sat for eosinophilic granuloma). I wonder if I should test her. I know she won't sit still for it.

Re: 12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105

Does she have arthritis? Interstitial cystitis?

If she associates pain with the litterbox, she will avoid it.

A trial of glucosamin would let you determine if that helped.

I've posted a list of some possible re-training tactics on the board previously here

Re: 12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105

It is a combination of glucosamin & chondroitin.

How much of the fluxetine do you give at a time? My vet told me Moochie should have half a 10 mg tab, but it made him a zombie. Someone here told me 1/4 tab. That seems to do very well for him, and the peeing in the wrong places has stopped!

Re: 12/31 Cami - I can take little pleasure in a +60 of 105

I started her on 1/4 tab, went to 1/2 tab briefly and back to 1/4 tab. I was starting to ween her off when she just went out of control, so I brought her back to 1/2 tab. She isn't acting like a zombie, but maybe that is too much. Things were better for a few days with the pee pads down, but earlier tonight she peed on the floor. She acts like she knows peeing outside the box is bad because if I walk into the room before she starts peeing (but I see her squatting) she leaves. She does that with the pads too - thinks that is "bad" and will stop if she see me. That is what happened tonight, but she just went into the other room and peed on the floor. Sigh.
