Hey LL! Hope everyone is well today. Mocha's numbers finally seem to be turning around. I'm excited. More yellow pre-shot numbers than pink. :-D

He has a new "button" (as we call them in the Keough household) that Mocha has learned. If he pretends that he is starving, especially mid-cycle, he gets treats and food! And the more insistent he is, the faster and more plentiful the food and treats are! He has totally tricked us several times. We tend to feed first, then ask questions later. Like last night at 1:30AM, he wakes me up with a paw to the face *repeatedly* So I get up and feed him, while he is eating I check his BG, which turns out to be 226! Glad he wasn't as low as he was behaving, but still! It's not nice to scare the beans like that!

Civie Pepper is still very much in love with her new catnip candy cane (Christmas gift), and Mocha will occasionally use it as a pillow and bap her if she tries to steal a sniff.

I am sending healing vines to those in need, and pretty green and blue vines to all the rest!

They really do figure out the button for the beans   It's good that you are seeing more yellow pre shots! I hope that soon it will be blue and green :-D

Yep, they sure do know how to get what they want out of us, and we beans are just putty in their furry little paws. I'm so glad you're seeing better numbers for Mocha - woohooooo! Have a great night, Cheryl!

Three mornings of yellow PS...are we working this juse now Mocha?? Hopefully he slid down more for you today!

Well, Mocha must have gone pretty low today. nailbite_smile I don't know about that 400, seems like a bounce to me. He seems to be favoring his mouth a bit, so I think I will be calling the vet tomorrow to schedule some dental work. Are there any specific things I should be aware of taking a sugar kitty in for dental work?

Look at the New to the Group sticky, near the bottom there are a lot of links specific to different topics. Sienne did one on dentals and it's got everything you will want to know.

I read through the info in the thread suggested. It doesn't seem specific to cats with FD. I have a few more questions, what kind of pain medication is safe for Sugar cats? What if the vet wants to give the cat antibiotics after the procedure? How do most vets handle insulin and BG's during the procedure? These may be stupid questions, but after recently switching vets because of inadequate knowledge, I am afraid of putting Mocha in a bad situation. nailbite_smile

Not stupid questions at all.

Cats can take buprenorphine one tramadol although I have found with the latter that my cats hate the taste and it makes them hyper. The bupe is usually given by the vet as an injectable or he could give you several needleless syringes to squirt the bupe In his cheek pouches. The tramadol is either in a pill, compounded into a liquid, or transdermal. If it's compounded, you have to be sure it is not made with any sweeteners including maltodextrin.

You do not want a Convenia injection or Metacam (which is a NSAID with a black box warning in cats). The former is ioa sustained release antibiotic that is effective for 2-3 weeks but can stay in the body for months. Many vets, if an a/b is needed, prescribe clavamox or clindamycin.

You'd have to talk to your vet about how they handle insulin and anesthesia but we usually recommend a half dose the morning of the surgery. Some members skip. You have to really watch after anesthesia because it can cause numbers to come down quite  a bit.

Thank you so much for the info Marje! I really appreciate it. He seems to be hurting and I really want to make things better.
