Mad Scientist and Buddy

Member Since 2010
Last night I went to sleep with Buddy curled up under my arm like usual - he hasn't necessarily been doing this lately. Woke up a few times and found him between our pillows (a close number 2 favorite spot to sleep). If felt so nice to have some normal behavior.
Saw the specialist today and she confirmed that there was really nothing that could be done. She said that she could try Palladia, but really there is no efficacy using that drug with Squamous Cell Carcinoma. I'm not holding his sore mouth open and shoving a pill down his throat so that he can live like this an extra month. Now if there were a possibility of curing/remission that's an entirely different story.
I've had to start adding Parmesan cheese from the start of feeding to keep him even mildly interested in his food.

We're going to start a morphine based pain killer as soon as I can get the script filled.
We're discussing how to help him over the rainbow bridge and seeing if it can be done at home where he feels safe. I can't protect him from the cancer, but I can protect him from pain, discomfort, and fear.
He was my gift from heaven, with so much love to give, and there he will return much too early in his short life.

Peace, love, and purrs,
Tony

Have you heard of neoplasene?
Alternative idea, which some, predominently non-vets, vouch for using. Some think it works; some don't. An option, not a mandate.

And a contrary point of view here

Hi BJM,
While I would love to believe that this would work, it goes against my mandate to protect him from pain and fear.
I took a look at some information about Neoplasene and have to say it is a scary idea. Many pages offered this type of statement "The effects of bloodroot’s active ingredients have not been researched aggressively, because most pharmaceutical companies will not spend money on something that they may not be able to patent, such as a plant."
This statement is utterly ridiculous as plant based compounds are researched and in many cases made more potent through medicinal chemistry before patenting, the vinca alkaloids and taxol fall into this category.
I'm not trying to start anything with you, you have been great and supportive, and this site is wonderful to get Buddy's story out there. Just trying to get some info out there for people to think about, I really hate to see statements like the one page above had written while peddling dangerous snake oil.

Peace, love, and purrs,
Tony

Precisely why I gave both links. Perspectives differ. There is actually a Yahoo group I joined when I was researching it for Pepper.

I'll probably never do chemo again for a kitty with cancer, only palliative care. Pepper had vomiting and diarrhea after every single treatment and it maybe bought an extra 3 months of time.

Hi,
Putting Buddy through an ordeal for 3 mos of life is not worth it to me.
And I don't mean in terms of money. He is my beautiful baby boy and he will not suffer.

Peace, love, and purrs,
Tony
