We have a couple of inches of snow on the ground and in the trees. It looks like the Holidays!
Rusty had a good night sleeping between his beans, but he didn't get to much of his fuds. He's made a dent in his breakfast, however. Right now he's up on the radiator, drinking out of a bowl of water I put there to get some humidity into our environment. We have hot-water heat (the radiator is full of water), so our radiators stay hot a long time. The ones in the living room have marble slabs on top of them. But hot water heat is a sealed system, so it's more drying than steam heat. I remember my mother going around every day pouring water into trays on top of the steam-heat radiators.

Edward and I are about to head to the post office. Winter boots are now our everyday footwear.

Rusty! Did you remember to take the shark repellant? It's great that you are checking the deep waters for errant kitties, but don't stay there too long!

Have you tried the ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers. The nurses suggested I get one to help my wife breathe at night during her struggle with lung cancer. They cautioned against warm mist that everyone used to do, as it seemed to be determined that it was not good for health at all and that the cool mist was. I got this one

Recently noticed all the plants were drying out in the house and seemed to be dying and within a couple of days of using it the plants seem healthy again.

Strangely us walmart it is 46.99US and canadian walmart is 39.96CDN that's almost half price with the exchange rate.
 
In my NJ house, I had a humidifier in every room. We had dry heat so in the winter it was miserable. I would have dry itching skin, allergies were terrible, static electricity in the house. Even with placing a tray of water on the radiators, it wasn't enough. The house would be under 20% humidity. Used them over 20+ years. Had all kinds of them. From experience, evaporating ones were very quite but needed filters changed almost daily and hard to find. Ultrasonic with auto controls to set a range never worked properly. Some required distilled water. Any that are filled from the bottom were very hard to clean and after awhile the seal deteriorated and some times leaked. All of them get algae build up. All cool mist humidifiers will make a room cool. The best ones I found for cleaning and less algae buildup were the spindle ones. Even my doctor recommended them over any other. They were a little noisy but so easy to fill from the top, no filters, no leaking, easy cleaning. I bleached them once a week. Make sure there is a towel or something under them. Oh and the best place to put them for effectiveness is on the floor. If your sitting on couch or chair and humidifier is on table, the cool mist is going above you not at the level you need it for easy breathing. I'm just giving some tips from a long time allergy, extreme dry skin sufferer.

Thanks so much for this! It confirms my original thought that I don't want to fool around with humidifiers! Our house is comfortable the way it is. We live in a damp part of the world and it is very cold in winter. Sure don't want our rooms cooler than they are already (we live "cool" on purpose).

We had radiators like you. Adding water to trays didn't help much but it was better than nothing. Our house would get to lows of less than 15%. It did make breathing hard for me. I always gauged when I had to start using them on the static electricity. Sometimes it was so dry you could actually see the blue lightning bolt when touching a door knob or even the cat. Humidifiers did help so much though especially when sleeping, I wasn't coughing all night. Here in our PA house the humidity is never lower than 40%. Even in the summer with ac on the lowest was 45% this past summer.
