NOTE: Pumbaa's SS in in reverse order with the most recent data at the top.

We don't want to talk about today's numbers. I am calling it either NDW or a bounce after Pumbaa's green and blue streak. I don't know which it is, so maybe someone can explain to me how to figure it out.

The last couple of days, little macho-man Pumbaa has been very lovey-dovey. During low numbers as well as high ones. He's been coming into my office and walking on the desk in front of my keyboard until I pick him up and snuggle with him. Mr. Wiggle Butt actually demanding that I hold him and snuggle? Has hell frozen over? haha_smiley For months now, every time I grab him to test him, I put him over my shoulder, and rub my cheek against his cheeks/scent glands, on the way to the testing/feeding table. Maybe he's decided that he likes this! He's also been spending more time in my office than he did during the summer. The kitty condo is in here, as well as a spare office chair that he likes sleeping on, and, next to my printer, I have a rectangular wicker basket I lined with a towel which he has been sleeping in again lately. He's purring in there right now!

Don't know what tonight will bring for Pumbaa's numbers, and I haven't had much time to speculate.

ps: The image wasn't supposed to be this huge. I had downsized it several times after uploading it the first time. Sorry for the amount of space it's taking up.

He looks good but I have to admit that mohawk haircut looks mangy? Hey that's better than the furshots! And he can grow it back when he's OTJ.

BTW I don't see anything that would be bouncing off of within cycles. Likely typical NDW.

We are going to keep the mangy Mohawk as long as Pumbaa needs insulin. It helps so much to see exactly what I am doing when I am tenting/shooting him!

I really recommend this buzzing off of the fur to everyone injecting their cat with anything. I can't remember when I last had a fur shot because when there is little fur, there is less guessing. Also, Pumbaa doesn't like the longer Terumo needles, so I can only put the needle in so far, and the buzzed fur really helps me with this.

Pumbaa grows this fur back very quickly, so I have to buzz him at least once a month. And when he's OTJ, he can have all of his fur back in all of his glory. (Unless he prefers the Mohawk!) *LOL*

For the first time ever (since Lantus?) I'm actually having problems with furshots.

Chip has put on so much more weight I can't get such an easy tent. And his fur is so thick now I can't see his skin.

Last winter I wasn't shooting regular insulin not to mention it wasn't cold. But I don't have clippers.

And Chip is somewhat prissy about grooming it would likely drive him crazy to have a mangy mohawk.

He looks so cute in his basket! I can't even see any buzzed area - unless on his thigh? That looks like the light reflecting.

Loved your subject line, BTW! From one of the greatest movies ever! And I love quoting movies, but usually people are clueless...

He is doing his standard response, I think. I think there is a pattern that is predictable (anti jinx) after a dose increase: lower numbers in 2-4 cycles, followed by higher numbers. Then I think he evens out, but at that point you have usually raised the dose again.

I, too, am a big fan of buzzing. No fur shots on Sneakers since I can tell where the shot goes and it is time to do it again- and for a while it was almost a weekly happening because of her mats.

I bought my clippers at Wal-Mart for about $20- came with all sorts of attachments.

I love the picture of Pumbaa and I don't think it is too big at all. He looks adorable in the basket.

Same thing with Pumbaa. Not just the weight, but the fact that he's more muscular instead of flabby/fat from the dry food, and that makes the tenting more difficult now. Pumbaa doesn't mind the Levemir shots at all...what he doesn't like now is the tenting.

Sheila, yes, that shiny area on his thigh/flank is where I buzz him. On both sides since I alternate which side I shoot him on AM & PM. That's why Chippendale's calls it his mohawk. *LOL*

Heather, I've had my Wahl buzzers/trimmers for about 20 years now. *LOL* When I was younger and skinnier, I used to wear my hair really, really short, and once a month would put on the longest attachment, and just buzz off my hair. Talk about a low maintenance haircut! And for some reason, everyone used to like rubbing my head. *LOL*

The weird thing/pattern I see with Pumbaa (and he did this on the Lantus, too), is that he will spend a cycle going up, then the next cycle he'll go down. Up the next cycle, down the cycle after that.

11/27 AM cycle: Up
11/27 PM cycle: Down
11/28 AM cycle: Up
11/28 PM cycle: Down
12/1 AM cycle: Up
12/1 PM cycle: Down
12/2 AM cycle: Up

I've always considered that pattern to be strange. Is there some explanation for this that I am missing, as in nadir related?

Jeddie used to do that and I always thought it was in indication of slightly too much insulin, but it was when the low cycle PS would be below 100s. I just thought of it as being a mini "dive/bounce" to use your terms. He also used to have these 7-9 day episodes where his numbers got better and better until he had 1-2 beautiful cycles and then worse and worse until he was fairly high and flat. Rinse, repeat. I never really figure it out and never really got him well regulated.

I don't know what the explanation is. There is something called 'dawn phenomenon', which I think if higher am numbers (waking), but can't remember exactly. You might look it up. Maybe Pumbaa is following that pattern.

Or maybe it is just his own pattern. Is there any difference in amount of food or exercise he gets from day to night?

The dawn phenomenon, in humans anyway, is when you wake up after a good night's sleep and your BG is higher than it should be after not eating all night long. If I remember correctly (there's a PZI cat with the same problem so it's come up there before), the theory is that a human's BG goes too low over night and results in a "bounce" in the morning. Due to not eating overnight. So they are encouraged to wake up, have a small snack, and go back to sleep. Or have a bedtime snack just before going to sleep.

Sheila and Carl:

I've read about the dawn phenomenon, but that's not what Pumbaa does.

Pumbaa will start with a low AMPS, then go up most of the AM cycle. His PMPS will be higher than his AMPS. But then, he will spend the evening cycle going down in numbers.

I have to study his numbers more, but then Carl will accuse me of "over analyzing". When I see this trend, it could just be when he is bouncing or trying to clear a bounce.

So, once again this morning, his AMPS was also his nadir. Since he should be dropping now for his PM cycle, I'm going to try and nap before a +7, and try to catch how low he goes.

Sheila, I don't see a huge difference in food/activity from AM to PM cycles. I think he eats/sleeps/plays about the same during both cycles, with emphasis on the eating and sleeping. Hahahaha!

Chippendale's: If you read this, today Pumbaa got lower carbed food in the AM (4%) and got higher carbed food in the PM (6%). He got the same food, in the same order, on 12/2. I just don't see the food affecting his numbers. Do you? Column AC in the SS lists the food he got AM and PM, with the protein/fat/carb content. I've never seen a correlation to the food he got to his numbers. That's not saying I'm not missing something, though.

Moi? Nah, study away, Suze. ;-) I could look at numbers all day long and love every minute of it! I think Baseball stats, for instance, are the best part of life. I'm a stat geek

It's only "over" when you stress out too much about it, or try to force answers out of inconclusive data. Some days the answers are "just 'cuz" and "I'm not going to worry about it because it doesn't make any sense". :-D

Carl

Carl,

Stats are great when they make sense! :)

Since I can seldom make sense out of Pumbaa's stats, I over-analyze 'cause I feel like I'm missing something, instead of admitting that Pumbaa is simply not paying attention to:

Sheila, guilty! I PhotoShopped it. *LOL* Just didn't have a whole lot of time to totally redo it. ;)

Sheila: Cami is doing just great!!!!! How much is .05U? Isn't that less than a drop? Beautiful!!!!!!

I don't know that I'll ever be able to dose like that! Especially with my close-up eyesight getting worse every minute. Thankfully, I have a good selection of "cheater" glasses available, which I need to start keeping in the kitchen with my other Pumbaa paraphernalia.

Ah, I think we are the same age (nearly) and I wear progressive lens glasses. I have been known to put readers over them to get those ultra micro doses. That a good light does the trick - usually.

You never know what you can do until you try, but I take the position that if someone else can do it, then I probably can too - unless we are talking Olympic spots or genus level math...

Thank you, Sheila! You always make me laugh. You and I definitely have the same warped outlook on life at times. Must be the Chicago connection. :)

I've wanted to do that ever since I got them- but couldn't figure it out- do I need to have my head upside-down? Does it do alright if I am upright? I'd love inch long hair  . I always go to the school and say "make it short- very short"

Heather, no, you don't have to have your head upside down to buzz it the length you want. The attachments keep the hair from getting too close to the blades, so you get the length you want.

Before I started buzzing my own hair, I used to tell my stylist if you couldn't see my scalp, it was too long. ;) He used to have so much fun doing my hair, and I sent him so many referrals, he never charged me for cuts.
